BERGAMO - Here are the declarations of Alessandro Nesta after the suspension of Atalanta-Milan: "All of us players came on the pitch convinced we would play, then unfortunately the fans started to break down the barriers that separated them from the pitch to have the match suspended, and at that moment there was no police on the pitch that could intervene. Football is the mirror image of what's going on outside the stadium."

Following the launch of flares and the attempt to invade the pitch by the Atalanta fans, in protest against the death of Gabriele Sandri, Atalanta-Milan was suspended in the 7th minute. Just like these 'fans' wanted.




BERGAMO - The news of the death of Lazio fan Gabriele Sandri, allegedly due to a gunshot fired by a policeman at a petrol station at Badia di Pino, near Arezzo, generated tension in Bergamo between the ultras and the police. Some fans, just before the start of the match, started getting into fights with the police.


But, during the warm up session of the teams, and after the start of the match, the Atalanta fans continued their protest by launching flares and chanting, forcing referee Saccani to suspend the match for the first time after already a minute. Then it restarted; but it didn't take long.
The situation degenerated when the ultras started to kick the plexiglass barrier which protects the fans from the pitch. The attempt by Doni and captain Bellini to calm things down was to no avail. After only seven minutes of play and seven of suspension with the teams still on the pitch, Saccani ordered everyone to get back in the dressing rooms.


Soon after came the definitive decision: Atalanta-Milan is suspended, probably postponed. That remains to be seen. What matters is that another black page has been written in Italian football. Part of the Atalanta fanbase decided the game should not be played. In the end, it didn't and they won.
