Orlando Bloom to appear in new Uniqlo ads

Friday 01st October, 05:24 AM JST

TOKYO —

British actor Orlando Bloom, 33, has been recruited into the cast of Uniqlo’s new global ad campaign. He is appearing in a commercial for Uniqlo’s winter range that began airing on TV on Thursday.

The ad was shot in a documentary style and shows Bloom snowboarding on a cold winter morning in the gently falling snow, wearing a crew neck Heat Tech top under a down parka jacket. The images are supported by narration from Bloom, who talks about those winter days when you just have to get outside, whatever the weather.

Uniqlo has been pushing for overseas expansion recently using the slogan “MADE FOR ALL.” Although Bloom had heard of Uniqlo before, it was his first time wearing the brand himself. His verdict was that, “The clothes are comfortable and the texture’s great. They’re the kind of unpretentious clothes that anyone can wear.”

SDN48's Sakura Fukuyama leaves show business
Thu, September 30, 2010 (9:21am EDT)

SDN48 member Sakura Fukuyama (22) announced on her blog today that due to health problems, she is leaving the group and putting her show business career on hold.

Fukuyama, who hails from Niigata, debuted as a second-generation member of SDN48 this past March. She has been suffering from a chronic illness for some time, though details about the illness have not been made public. Her condition has recently worsened, so she has decided to finally take a break.

The timing of the decision is unfortunate for Fukuyama, as she was selected earlier this month as one of the 12 members who will perform on SDN48's major label debut single, which is being released on November 24. Her graduation from the group has not yet been scheduled.

CHAGE and ASKA to simultaneously release solo albums
Thu, September 30, 2010 (11:21am EDT)

CHAGE and ASKA, who are currently on indefinite hiatus as a duo, will be separately releasing solo albums on the same day. Based on their schedules, they coincidentally began working on new albums around the same time, and later discussions led to their decision to release the albums simultaneously on November 3.

CHAGE's album is titled "&C" and will feature guest musicians such as Fumina Hisamatsu, Keisuke Murakami, and Susumu Nishikawa. The track "Mawase Ookina Chikyuugi" will be released in advance as a single on October 6.

ASKA, on the other hand, will release a concept album called "Kimi no Shiranai Kimi no Uta." Like his last album "12," it appears to be a cross between a best album and a cover album. This time, the theme is a collection of 12 songs that together tell a love story. One of the key songs, "C-46," is being adapted as an original story that will be a special chapter in Kenshi Hirokane's manga series "Tasogare Ryuseigun."

Both CHAGE and ASKA also have tours lined up. CHAGE will be touring Japan for 13 shows starting on December 4, while ASKA is launching a 26-concert tour on October 30 that includes overseas shows in Shanghai and Macau.

Yukie Nakama, Tetsushi Tanaka rumor resurfaces
Thu, September 30, 2010 (5:47pm EDT)

This week's issue of FRIDAY seems to have some evidence to support the rumor that actress Yukie Nakama (30) and actor Tetsushi Tanaka (44) are dating. That relationship was first reported back in November of last year, but the news was denied by both of their agencies.

FRIDAY caught Tanaka on film in mid-September, concealing his face with a mask and hat as he entered Nakama's apartment building.

Nakama's agency again denies that there is romance but acknowledges that the two are good friends, saying that they often go out to eat with other co-actors. Tanaka's agency offered no comment.

Nakama and Tanaka have worked together in multiple television dramas, including last year's "Untouchable."

Anime songs top charts with talented singers and support from women

TOKYO —

Theme songs and soundtracks from Japanese anime are making inroads into the mainstream J-pop music genre, drawing popularity particularly from female consumers as talented voice actresses sing the songs.

More than 60 anime songs hit the top 10 singles chart this year, according to entertainment information provider Oricon Co. Sales of CDs in the anime and soundtrack genre totaled 29.3 billion yen in 2009, up from 24.9 billion yen in 2005, according to Oricon.

Since the Tower Records store in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district opened a section for anime songs this spring, Ryo Majima, who is in charge of J-pop music at the store, says he saw more than a 30 percent increase in female customers.

The songs have ‘‘good melody lines and the voice actresses singing are talented,’’ Majima says. He believes customers including women, who are not necessarily ardent anime fans, can easily connect with songs sung by popular anime voice actresses.

Especially noteworthy is the growing popularity in so-called ‘‘character songs,’’ in which the voice talents sing as anime characters, says Hiroko Katsuragi, editor at entertainment business magazine ‘‘Oricon Biz.’’ CDs released under a band appearing in anime ‘‘K-on’’ have topped Oricon’s weekly hit charts.

‘‘This is a big boom that we’ve never seen before,’’ says Katsuragi. ‘‘The talents are going into the anime songs genre and I believe the popularity will last,’’ she added.

200 films to be screened at Tokyo Int'l Film Festival

Saturday 02nd October, 06:55 AM JST

TOKYO —

About 200 films, ranging from heart-warming animations to bone-chilling thrillers, will be screened at the 23rd Tokyo International Film Festival next month, organizers said Thursday.

For the festival’s main competition section, 15 films have been selected out of 832 entries from 76 countries and territories to compete for the Tokyo Sakura Grand Prix and the Special Jury Prize, as well as best director and actor awards, during the nine-day event from Oct 23 to 31.

Award winning Irish film director Neil Jordan, who won an Oscar for best screenplay with ‘‘The Crying Game,’’ heads the five-member jury who will select the winners.

Two Japanese films, ‘‘Sketches of Kaitan City’’ directed by Kazuyoshi Kumakiri and ‘‘Post Card’’ directed by Kaneto Shindo, are among the 15 works in the competition along with Italian crime drama ‘‘And Peace on Earth’’ and ‘‘Flamingo No.13,’’ an Iranian film about a triangular relationship in a small mountain village.

At a press conference announcing the lineup for the festival, Kumakiri said he has received tremendous support from people in Hakodate in Hokkaido where the film was mainly shot.

‘‘Sketches of Kaitan City,’’ based on an unfinished posthumously published story by Yasushi Sato, depicts the daily lives and hardships of residents in an imaginary city.

‘‘I would like to celebrate this opportunity to show our film to the world through the film festival with the people of Hakodate,’’ said Kaho Minami, an actress starring in the film.

The festival will open with the screening of ‘‘The Social Network,’’ an American film about the founder of the Facebook networking website Mark Zuckerberg, directed by David Fincher, and close with American crime drama ‘‘The Town,’’ starring and directed by Ben Affleck.

The special screenings section also includes ‘‘Countdown to Zero,’’ a documentary by the team who made ‘‘An Inconvenient Truth’’ who this time investigate the danger of nuclear annihilation.

This year again, a Green Carpet area, instead of a Red Carpet one, will be established at Roppongi Hills Oyane Plaza with the support of environmentally conscious companies and collection boxes for donations for environmental projects will be placed throughout the area.

Tatsumi Yoda, chairman of the event, said he eventually wants to make the Tokyo film festival as good as one of the four major film festivals in the world.

The films will be premiered at venues in Roppongi Hills in Minato Ward and other sites in Tokyo.

TOKYO —

An annual festival aiming to enhance exchange among Japanese and South Korean people was held Saturday in Tokyo, with 30,000 people watching performances by South Korean pop stars as well as traditional cultural groups.

As the two countries marked the 100th anniversary of Japan’s colonization of the Korean Peninsula this year, the ‘‘Nikkan Koryu Omatsuri (Japan-South Korean Exchange Festival)’’ was held under the theme of enjoying differences and rejoicing over similarities at the Roppongi Hills complex in Minato Ward.

In an address at the opening ceremony, Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara said, ‘‘I hope ties among Japanese and South Korean people will develop further.’‘

Hamasaki achieves dream of appearing alongside canine father in Softbank ads

Monday 04th October, 03:49 AM JST

TOKYO —

Singer Ayumi Hamasaki, 31, is to appear alongside one of her favorite TV characters - the talking dog from the Softbank Mobile ads. The popular ads feature a white dog that plays the father of the Shirato family.

Hamasaki, who is reportedly a big fan of the father character, contacted Softbank founder and president Masayoshi Son, 53, on Twitter, and got the OK. In the ads, Hamasaki, who is disguised as fledgling pop-star wannabe Nagashi no Ayu encounters Mr Shirato in a small, neighborhood eatery. The story involves an air of romantic tension as Hamasaki sings to Shirato enka-style about gossip, divorce and being just friends. The kindly dog assures her she’s going to be big someday.

Upon her first meeting with the Softbank dog, Hamasaki said, “I thought he was going to be smaller and fluffy. I’m struck by how large and powerful he is.” After making friends with the dog throughout the shoot, Hamasaki had a photo taken with him for posterity before saying her goodbyes.

Model and actress turned novelist Yuzuki Muroi, 40, plays the family restaurant proprietress in the ad and famed enka singer Shiro Miya also appears as a guitarist.

Kobashi Kenta Ko'd by Killer Kiss
October 04, 2010

Popular professional wrestler Kobashi Kenta (43) and enka singer Mizuki Mai (36) finally made their 14-year relationship official on Saturday. The couple tied the knot at a municipal office in Tokyo and held their wedding ceremony at the Imperial Hotel. As they posed for photos after the ceremony, one reporter shouted out, "Mai-san, kiss!" Kobashi seemed bemused at first but was beaming after his bride gave him a peck on the cheek. A demon in the ring, he was momentarily reduced to the ranks of the typical lovestruck male.

Kobashi overcame cancer of the kidneys in 2007, but is currently undergoing rehabilitation for knee and elbow injuries. No doubt thinking of his responsibility as vice-chairman of the Pro Wrestling Noah troupe, he told reporters, "I want to get back in the ring as soon as possible." But of course he now has added responsibilities, not least of which is his new bride. "Looking after her is the most important thing for me. And I want to have lots of kids!" Mizuki is currently enjoying sales success of her latest single "Nozomizaka Kara Ashitazaka."
