KARISMA-SUNJAY TOLD TO SETTLE

The Delhi High Court held a brief in-camera hearing to decide the earlier adjourned case of Karisma - Sunjay Kapur about the legality of their daughter's passport obtained by Karisma Kapoor in Mumbai. The court has fixed the next hearing for September 15 and told both the parties to reach a settlement either for a divorce or for a mutual settlement. The counsel for Karisma is stated to have agreed for a limited settlement though didn't specify the terms and condition for it. While Sunjay Kapur waited outside the in-camera hearing, Karisma was not seen in the court. Film circles are wondering if one the parties to the dispute will move a Family Court either in Delhi or in Mumbai for the annulment of their marriage. Since Karisma has a infant child to look after she can movie the court in Mumbai where she is staying at present, to avoid commuting to Delhi.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested in Mumbai the alleged culprit involved in the life threat to Karisma's estranged husband Sunjay Kapoor. According to police sources, the cyber crime unit of the Mumbai police has succeeded in tracing the culprit. As reported earlier, Sunjay Kapur had alleged to the Delhi police that he had been receiving life threats on email from Mumbai.

Family stands by Karisma: Kareena Kapoor

Going public for the first time on the bitter legal battle involving her elder sister Karisma Kapoor, Bollywood actor Kareena Kapoor on Tuesday said she would emerge a "winner" from the episode with the support of her family.

"She (Karisma) is a good person, a strong individual. She'll fight this and come out a winner, as a more positive person. That's the way her career has been and that's why in her personal life too, she'll be a winner," Kareena said on Tuesday.

"As a family we are together and this is the time a family should stand together," she added.

Over the media attention that her sister's broken marriage was getting, Kareena said this was "part and parcel" of being a star.

"Stars and artistes should not look at it as being a disadvantage. They should look at it this way, if you are popular, people will come behind you. If you are a public figure, people will talk about it," she said.

Karisma and her estranged industrialist husband Sunjay Kapur are embroiled in a legal battle over custody of their five-month-old daughter Samaira.

However, the Tokyo grocers have chosen an equally hot wrapper for Indian spices. They have found that Tamilian actor Rajnikanth as hot as chillies. The Rajnikanth wrapper has turned to be a hit in Tokyo. This all happened only after the Japanese watched his 'Muthu', a remake of a Malayalee movie.

MY FAVORITE DRESS IS KURTA-PYJAMA, BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT I WANT TO BECOME A NETA...

My full name is Aamir Khan. I was born in Mumbai on 14th march. My height is 5' 6" and my weight is 74 kgs. I studied in Sqint Annie high school and Bombay Scottish school.

I had been a student of N.S. college, but somehow could not obtain my degree.

From my childhood,I have been greatly attracted towards films as my father,Tahir Hussian was associated with this field.

As a hero, my first film was ' Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak', which was highly appreciated. In the beginning, I was very much inclined towards Directors vis-୶is acting and worked as Assistant Director in the first film 'Holi'.

My favourite actors are - Motilal, Balraj Shahni, Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachhan. Actresses whom I have always appreciated and admired are Nutan, Madhubala, Juhi Chawla and Madhuri dixit.

My favourite Directors are - Vimal Roy, Mehboob Khan, Raj Kumar Santoshi, Mansoor Khan, Robert Denoreau and Steven Speillburg.

Among musicians I highly appreciate R.D. Burman.

I am very much fond of wearing Kurta-Payjama, but that does not mean I want to become a neta. I like my Jeans-T-Shirt style also. I don't like wearing formal suits at all, however, on certain occasions I have to wear it.

I think I am good-looking, although I am not a hunk in that sense of the word. For that matter, I don't think that it is the requirement of an actor to be tremendously good-looking.

I loved doing films like Akele Hum, Akele Tum, Raja Hindustani and Mann and 1947 Earth, but most of all Sarfarosh in recent times.

Tennis is my favorite game and during my college days I participated as a representative of Maharashtra in a national level competition of the game.

My most striking weakness is my being forgetful and disorganized in every matter. Natural beauty and simplicity greatly attracts me.

Among writers I very much like reading Agatha Christie and P.G. Wodehouse.

I strongly dislike discos and high sounding noisy music, Wine and Cigarettes.

At the age of 15, I offered my love proposal to four girls who were elder to me, but they all rejected it. All this in fact, had broken my heart. At that time, this was indeed painful, but today while I recollect those events, it really amuses me.

According to me, the best film is that which gives almost pleasure to audience.

Interview with Ajay Devgan

Q.What are your thoughts on RAJU CHACHA at this moment of time?

At this moment of time RAJU CHACHA is going to be the most important film to be released. When we started this film we wanted to make a film which really satisfied us. We worked very hard on the subject and have made the film exactly the way we wanted to do it. People have been saying that the film has become very expensive and it has gone out of budget. But I don't think it has gone out of budget because when we started the film, there was so much of passion, there still is, that we did not keep any budget. So when you don't have a budget you don't go out of budget. And we're still working very hard on it, putting in everything that we have.

What exactly is it about RAJU CHACHA that motivated you to put in everything? It's everything. It is the kind of films that we want to make, the way we want to make it. Whether it will turn out to be a good commercial proposition or not, nobody knows. But at least people should be satisfied and we would be proud of having made a film like this. From day one when we started work, things just clicked and we all got so involved in it that we did'nt want to let it go.

Q. How did RAJU CHACHA germinate?

There was a story idea narrated to us by Mr. Anees Bazmee which we all loved and thought we could do a lot with it. The whole idea is very different, something that surprisingly nobody attempted to make a film out of. It is basically a love story and has a lot of fun through children. It is a film about children and for everybody. See you've scripts about children and for children. And you also have scripts about children but not for children. Well this (RAJU CHACHA) is a script about children , about everything but for everybody. I mean the children are going to identify with it,the youth are going to identify with it and the elder people are going to identify with it which is very rare.

Q. How much time did you spend in the paperwork of the film, before you commenced shooting?

We spent something like about one year on the script and more than eight months on the sets in the film. Prior to us nobody had put up a set as big as we did for the film. It took us more than eight to ten months to design the set and it took us six months to erect the set.

Q. There are a lot of reports in the media that say that the film is inspired from the Julie Andrews' starrer, THE SOUND OF MUSIC ?

It is not. Only beacuse it has got three kids does not mean it is inspired from THE SOUND OF MUSIC. It is a very fresh script and it is certainly not inspired from any Hollywood or Indian film.

Q. Can you give us a gist of the film's story?

I won't want to give out the gist of the story. Let people see it because it can bebest understood only after seeing.

Q. You seem to have been totally involved in the making of RAJU CHACHA. In the sense that you've been involved with its scripting, making the music, designing the sets and everything. Have you been this intensively involved with a project like this in the past too?

Yeah, I've been so involved like this with, PYAAR TO HONA HI THA, in the past. And, now we are all involved with this film. Because I think teamwork works and it can do wonders to a film. Everybody is working hard. Each and every department has really worked hard in making the film a memorable one. Moreover film-making can never be a one-man show and every department has to work hard and be totally involved with it.

Q. There have been rumours that you have ghost-directed the film?

Well, that's not true. The only thing is that as I told you the film is a result of team work and everybody involved with the film has worked hard. Everybody makes suggestions and like the others I too did give suggestions at times but that's it. I have been only involved as an actor and producer. The creative inputs were decided collectively.

Q. It is believed that you particularly wanted Rishi Kapoor for the role he has done in the film?

Yes, because he's a great actor and suited his character in the film perfectly. He displays a lot of love, warmth, dignity and understanding, by his sheer presence. We have a huge castle in the film and I wanted somebody who can look like a filthy rich man who owns the castle. And Rishi Kapoor met our requirements for that character. So we decided to cast him and are happy to have cast him. It was a pleasure working with him.

Q. Did you have to do a lot of convincing with him to make him accept the film?

No we did not have to convince him to accept the film. Because though he was out of acting at that time, he was contemplating getting back into it. So when we narrated the script and told him about his role he happily accepted it.

Q. You seem to have spent a fortune on the special effects sequences in the film. Is it true that the biling for this ran into two crores ?

Well that doesn't matter considering that it's a multi-crore project. The money we spent on the special efffects is nothing. We are happy that we were able to get them done as required. In fact, there is some special effects work for the film still going on. We hired all the top special effects studios in India like Pentafour, CMM, Crest etc to do our work. The special effects work for the film has been going on for the last several months. More than a hundred professionals in the field have worked on it.

Q. How much do you think you have evolved as an actor over the years?

I have learnt a lot of things and honed my skills but I think there is still a lot to learn and I am still evolving as an actor.

Q. Which do you think is the film that you consider as a milestone in your career, a film that established you as an actor?

Well there is no one film that I can say was a milestone or a turning point in my career. My evolution as an actor has been a gradual process which is spanned over a period of time. Right from my first film I think I have been evolving and improving as an actor. And I feel my best is still to come.

Q. What are the things that you take into consideration before accepting a film, now. Has your approach gone through a change over the past few years?

The most important thing for me today is the script of the film and the people behind the project. Because I like to feel comfortable when I am doing a film. Because if you are not comfortable with what you are doing or are unable to enjoy work then it affects your performance.

Q. So what are the things that you look for in a script?

You can't say that I would like to have this or that in a good script. If you are looking for that and if they're missing then it doesn't mean that it is a bad script. Actually, there's no yardstick by which you can guage a script, as good or bad. I think a good script depends a lot on your instincts, too.

Q. What do you think acting is all about. Is it an art, a craft or a technique?

Well its a combination of all these three things. If you are familiar with the technicalities of film-making then it is certainly a great help to you as an actor. To act one has to have it in himself because I think it can't be taught. You just have it or you don't but you can't learn acting in a school.

Q. How much do you rely on your directors?

A lot because ultimately a film is a director's vision. So one has to work within the parameters of that vision. Without the help of the director one can't give a good performance.

Q. You've been active as an actor, film-maker, distributor and you also have started your own television software production company, so how do you manage to take time out for all these things?

I have a very good team of people who help me in running my business affairs. So there's nothing for me to worry about.

Q. Do you still make films in 16mm like you used to as a teenager?

No, I dont do that now. Today my canvas has grown bigger and I work on films in cinemascope or 70mm.

Q. How much of a help is your family in your business?

Well my wife looks after the production and so does my dad. Things that they can't handle are looked after by some very efficient people.

Q. So what's next after RAJU CHACHA?

Raju Chacha has been one of my dream projects. Well, I still have to decide on what I will do next though a few things are under consideration. But I will take a decision on that only after I'm through with this.

I HAD NO BETTER OPTIONS

Says Pooja Batra, ex-ramp girl and now the much sought after actress in Bollywood. Her latest film Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye has just been released and she is sure that with her coming movies like Nayak and Khajuraho she will leave a mark.

She is the chirpy, bubbly and yet confident girl of today. She proves her talent in every opportunity she gets on celluloid screen. Meet Pooja Batra, the ex-model slowly and steadily inching her way up in Bollywood. Pooja got her first chance on big screen in Priyadarshan's Virasat opposite Anil Kapoor. Although a well-known actress Tabu played the main lead in the film but Pooja still managed to get her share of the limelight. People took notice of her and appreciated her talent, but after that there have not been many films to satisfy the thirst of her fans. "Yeah, I have been out of the scene for some time", confesses Pooja adding that now she is back with a bang fully prepared to do some meaty roles in Hindi Cinema.

"I am thankful to director Priyadarshan who gave me a chance in Hindi cinema through Virasat. Though I played a role which is known as a second lead in typical film journalism but I did get appreciation for that, didn't I?", she quips. Yes, She did. But after Virasat there have only been films like Bhai and Haseena Maan Jayegi where also she was playing the side role. Will these types of roles not harm her right in the beginning of her career? She nods in agreement, "May be you are right. But where was the option at that time?" In the beginning, nobody knew me in the industry, so I accepted the roles which came my way. Further I would also like to mention that in the beginning I had no person to guide me or give me suggestions as to what is right and what is wrong for my future. But now on, I will see that I choose only the right kind of films.'

Pooja after making a debut in Hindi films went down South and did some good films. She was at one point of time being linked with the director Priyadarshan. What are her comments on the relationship with the director? `Oh, I know, what people talk, but let me clear this once and for all that for me my career is the first priority. Everything else comes second. Yes, Priyadarshan gave me a break in his film. I am doing his next film Kash-m-Kash also. But, that is all. I share a purely professional relationship with him, that exists between a director and his actress nothing more than that,'explains Pooja. But, why had he dropped her from his last film Hera Pheri? Making it obvious that it is a question she has been often asked and she does not like answering it, she says, `I was never considered for the film so the question of dropping me does not arise. You may be aware that Karishma Kapoor was the first choice for the film but she had some differences at that particular time with the hero of the film Sunil Shetty. After her refusal the role was offered to Tabbu, and she did the role also finally. I was never in the picture. It is not mandatory for Priyadarshan to cast me in every film of his. How my name was brought into this controversy I can't figure out. Somewhere it was reported that I was considered for the role and then I was dropped, but the truth is that I was nowhere in the fray for that film. I think I am clear enough on that.

On her ambitions and future plans, Pooja is clear that now she only wants to do the roles that have some strong descriptions. I can do a role of only say ten or fifteen minutes but it has to be of prominence in the story narration. I am not here just for the sake of money. I am happy enough with my present financial condition. So I do not have to run after producers or directors for roles. I am choosing only those roles that suit my talent and personality. My ambitions are also not very big. I just want to prove that I can act well and that is all. My fans will soon see my in some very good and strong roles. My one film Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye has just been released.' She takes a pause, `Have you seen the movie? How did you like my role?' I reply positively in both the cases. `Then there are some good films lined up for near future. I am playing a strong role in Shanker's next movie Nayak with Anil Kapoor then there are Yahoo and Khajuraho also. I hope these films will put me in the right direction.

Pooja has been struggling in Bollywood on her own. She has got the talent, but no godfathers. And from what she says, it seems like she is here to stay.

JOHN SHINES MINUS BIPS TOO

Actor John Abraham and Bipasha Basu have been good friends since their modeling days. Both entered into Hindi movies and worked together and turned popular very soon. In fact, their pair became a craze among moviegoers, and this led to all sorts of speculation in the media; first about their affair and then about their marriage. But their deep friendship turned sour when the media mentioned about John Abraham coming closer to mast-mast girl Raveena Tandon. However, John didn't find Raveena as hot as Bipasha. So, Pooja Bhatt signed on both John and Bipasha for 'Jism'. This did take the pair to new heights in the tinsel town. Since both of them are hot in temperament too, they developed a sort of indifference towards each other though both deny this and assert that they are very good friends but are concentrating on their first priority which is their profession/ career.

Now, there are reports of John coming closer to Lara Dutta following both acting in 'Ailaan'. Earlier too, John earned name even in the midst of Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra in 'Dhoom'. Besides, John is playing an important role in 'Viruddh', a home production of Abhishek Bachchan but directed by Mahesh Manjrekar. John acts as a son of Amitabh Bachchan and Sharmila Tagore in this movie. Meanwhile, Karan Johar has also commenced his shoot for Kaal' with John in an equally important role. This shows that John has been shining even without Bipasha. But fans of John and Bipasha still believe in thick relations between the two. Many of them have been inquiring about John's health following news of some injury in his leg during Karan Johar's film shoot .

Aamir lights inauguration lamp

India is producing a good number of films and the number is on increase. However, this is the time to think on the quality of the films we produce, said Mr Jaipal Reddy, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, after the inauguration of the 35th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2004. Altogether 40 films have been selected out of 200; among which 20 are feature films and remaining 20 are non-feature films. The festival is full of fun and masti with the presence of top stars like. Dilip Kumar with his wife Saira Bano, Shabana Azmi with her husband Zaved Akhtar and showman Subhash Ghai with his 'Kisna's jhatka-matka girl Isha Sharbani. Aamir Khan and his girl friend Kiran Rao were also there. In fact, Aamir lighted the inauguration lamp bypassing the faces of glamour girls! After all he was accompanied by her latest rumored-to-be wife.

AKSHAY KHANNA LOOKING FOR LIFE PARTNER

Actor-turned-politician Vinod Khanna's son Akshay Khanna lives in his own world. However, he humbly says that he is not crazy about it. He is very excited these days with the audience's acclaim for his performance in Priyadarshan's recently released 'Hulchul'. His comedy role suits him too as he is the one who loves fun. He is aware that he is average in his looks; he doesn't look like a muscle man, as are his contemporaries in Bollywood. He is sorry and disheartened though that he has not been able to do films with top men like Karan Johar, Yash Chopra, Sanjay Leela Bhansali or Ram Gopal Verma. Even in his personal affairs he is unlike other stars and heroines.

He claims that he has no affair with anyone so far. He strongly denies any love affair with actress Tara Sharma as rumored in the tinsel town. He considers love as divine. Why should any one hide it from others? However, he confesses that he is looking for a life partner. He assures us that he would not keep it secret, if there is one, he adds. At present, he has no one in mind. He has a lot of extra time to devote to love, as he believes in doing only two films in a year. He reads the script and then decides to do a movie. He declines to do an average one. Despite his good wide-ranging acting talent, Akshay is not considered a star like the Khan brothers!
