Germany coach writes open letter to fans, says Greece is the model
TENERO, Switzerland - Germany coach Joachim Loew has written an open letter to his team's fans ahead of its opening European Championship game against Poland, pointing to defending champion Greece as inspiration.
"Our ambition and optimism are great. From defending champion Greece we can learn: if every one of us works for the team and if we come out as a harmonious unit, then the European title does not have to remain a dream," Loew said in the letter that was published Saturday by the German football federation.
Germany kicks off its campaign on Sunday in Klagenfurt. Poland has never beaten Germany.
Loew appealed for the kind of enthusiastic support that carried the team to a third-place finish at the World Cup two years ago at home.

Ballack speaks out against tabloid stuntMichael Ballack has joined in the condemnation of a Polish newspaper whose inflammatory front page, with a mocked-up image of the Chelsea midfielder's severed head , has led to complaints in the German parliament before a game which is threatening to bring discord to Euro 2008.
Leo Beenhakker, Poland's national coach, has already apologised for the "mad, dirty and sick" stunt in the newspaper Super Express, which had printed a superimposed picture of him brandishing the heads of Ballack and Germany's manager, Joachim L鰓, under the headline "Leo, bring us their heads!"
Another Polish newspaper has shown Ballack wearing a Prussian helmet, recalling a 15th-century battle in which Teutonic knights were defeated by the Poles. This, in turn, has prompted Bild, a German tabloid, to tell its readers that Poland has declared war in the run-up to tomorrow's Group B game in Klagenfurt. Bild described it as "disgusting" and Peter Danckert, the chairman of Germany's parliamentary sports commission, said he would bring the "absolute scandal" up with his counterparts in Poland.
"We have seen the pictures and it doesn't really make us jump for joy," said Ballack. "There are some people who are cynical enough to just accept this is an everyday occurrence and there is nothing you can do about it. But I for one am a little bit more concerned about it. This is just a football match and this sort of thing should not be printed."
However, Ballack emphasised that the controversy would have no impact on the game and, specifically, Germany's hopes of winning their first European Championship game since the tournament in England 12 years ago.
Germany have never lost against Poland and Ballack's form over the second half of the Premier League season should encourage them to believe they can maintain that run. "I have been fortunate enough recently to collect lots of compliments on my form and that is something I am keen to transfer to the Germany side," said the midfielder, before indicating that he would not be one of the players to leave Stamford Bridge this summer. "I am happy to play in the Premier League. It's a competition which encourages players to give only their very best week in, week out and you have to be 100%." |
