Chelsea: Champions League Draw Best & Worst Case Scenarios
With the Champions League draw coming up at 5pm today (OK it's scheduled for five, after the lard buffet has been consumed it may be closer to six o'clock) it's time to work out how the British clubs might fair. Last season, resumption of hostilities with both Liverpool and Barcelona combined to dump Chelsea out of the tournament. Although they can't face Liverpool this time in the group stages - they can face Bacelona.
BEST CASE
The best case scenario would involve playing good - but not exceptional clubs. With a preference for clubs that are fading after recent glories. An additional bonus would be short travelling times. Chelsea are in Pot Two because their EUFA Coefficient ranks them as 13th best of the remaining teams - between Bayern Munich and Roma.
Pot One offers Valencia, who aren't the force they were under Hector Cuper and Rafa Benitez. Drifting down the rankings they are the eighth ranked club and will offer no fear for Chelsea.
Pot Three offers a series of choices, but it might be nice for Mourinho to get a Portuguese club - either Sporting Lisbon or Benfica would be fine. For traditionalists a trip to Benfica would be great.
From Pot Four Kobenhavn (of FC Copenghagen if you prefer) are the team that everyone will be hoping for. Their best player may be former Everton midfield crock - Tobias Linderoth - and they really should be beatable. A trip to Copenhagen is also a bonus.
Valencia
CHELSEA
Benfica
Kobenhavn
WORST CASE
Long journeys, rising stars and historic jealousies would represent a balance of worst cases.
Pot One offers Barcelona and after the history and histrionics of the past two seasons it is the worst possible pick. Barcelona were champions of Europe last time - and Chelsea might want to leave them until this final this time.
From Pot Three CSKA Moscow are lowly in the rankings - but playing in the run up to the Moscow winter, at an odd time of the day will not be appealing. Imagine Shevchenko in the snow... oh yes, I forgot.
From Pot Four a trip to Kiev to face Dynamo would round off a miserable draw - but would offer Shevchenko a chance to see his mum (assuming she doesn't live in some swanky, Kensington pad - which if she does and you know she does, suggests that you are a subscriber to Heat magazine or somesuch, so does that make you a winner? Unless of course you are Roman Abramovich, in which case - sorry sir).
Barcelona
CHELSEA
CSKA Moscow
Dynamo Kiev |

Liverpool: Champions League Draw Best & Worst Case Scenarios
With the Champions League draw coming up at 5pm today (OK it's scheduled for five, after the trans-fat buffet has been consumed it may be closer to six o'clock) it's time to work out how the British clubs might fair. Following the glory of 2005 Liverpool are the fifth best rank club and as such should have a decent draw.
BEST CASE
The best case scenario would involve playing good - but not exceptional clubs. With a preference for clubs that are fading after recent glories. An additional bonus would be short travelling times.
From Pot Two the best case would appear to be Porto, who are a shadow of the team that won the UEFA and European Cups in successive seasons under Jose Mourinho. Celtic would be a close second due to cultural ties.
From Pot Three a short trip would be nice. Given Porto, the other Portuguese teams in Pot Two (Sporting, Benfica) would be unavailable leaving Werder Bremen or Bordeaux. Of the two Bremen appear to be on the slide since their Bundesliga win.
From Pot Four Kobenhavn (of FC Copenghagen if you prefer) are the team that everyone will be hoping for. Their best player may be former Everton midfield crock - Tobias Linderoth - and they really should be beatable. A trip to Copenhagen is also a bonus.
LIVERPOOL
Porto
Werder Bremen
Kobenhavn
WORST CASE
Long journeys, rising stars and historic jealousies would represent a balance of worst cases.
From Pot Two Lyon would be tough opponents. Ranked 9 by UEFA they just missed out on a top seeding. Lyon are many peoples idea of dark horses for the tournament, they may have just loss their Mali star, Mahamadou Diarra, but with Gerard Houllier in charge of the French team there will be inevitable friction and a difficult away leg.
From Pot Three CSKA Moscow are lowly in the rankings - but playing in the run up to the Moscow winter, at an odd time of the day will not be appealing. Imagine Garcia in the snow.
From Pot Four a trip to Kiev, in The Ukraine, to face Dynamo would round off a miserable draw.

Lyon

Arsenal: Champions League Draw Best & Worst Case Scenarios
With the Champions League draw coming up at 5pm today (OK it's scheduled for five, after the eat-yourself-silly buffet has been consumed it may be closer to six o'clock) it's time to work out how the British clubs might fair. Arsenal were beaten in the final by Barcelona last season and as a result rise to 6th in the rankings as a top seed. The top seed usually proceeds.
BEST CASE
The best case scenario would involve playing good - but not exceptional clubs. With a preference for clubs that are fading after recent glories. An additional bonus would be short travelling times.
The best case for Arsenal is probably Lille, ranked 16 in the UEFA coefficients and given Wenger's knowledge of French football this would appear an ideal second seed.
From Pot Three a short trip would be nice. Given Lille, Bordeaux would be unavailable leaving the two Portuguese teams (Sporting, Benfica) plus Werder Bremen. Of the three Bremen appear to be on the slide since their Bundesliga win.
From Pot Four Kobenhavn (of FC Copenghagen if you prefer) are the team that everyone will be hoping for. Their best player may be former Everton midfield crock - Tobias Linderoth - and they really should be beatable. A trip to Copenhagen is also a bonus.
ARSENAL
Lille
Werder Bremen
Kobenhavn
WORST CASE
Long journeys, rising stars and historic jealousies would represent a balance of worst cases.
From Pot Two Lyon may not be the same Bogey to Wenger that they could be to other clubs, so Bayern Munich who Arsenal have struggled with recently would be one to avoid.
From Pot Three CSKA Moscow are lowly in the rankings - but playing in the run up to the Moscow winter, at an odd time of the day will not be appealing. Imagine Reyes in the snow.
From Pot Four a trip to Kiev, in The Ukraine, to face Dynamo would round off a miserable draw.

Manchester United: Champions League Draw Best & Worst Case Scenarios
With the Champions League draw coming up at 5pm today (OK it's scheduled for five, after the pie buffet has been consumed it may be closer to six o'clock) it's time to work out how the British clubs might fair. Last season a seemingly benign group proved very problematic for United - and finishing fourth in the group was one of the two real low points of the season.
BEST CASE
The best case scenario would involve playing good - but not exceptional clubs. With a preference for clubs that are fading after recent glories. An additional bonus would be short travelling times.
From Pot Two the best case would appear to be Porto, who United beat in the close season, and who are a shadow of the team that won the UEFA and European Cups in successive seasons under Jose Mourinho.

Porto
Werder Bremen
Kobenhavn
WORST CASE
Long journeys, rising stars and historic jealousies would represent a balance of worst cases.
From Pot Two Lyon would be tough opponents. Ranked 9 by UEFA they just missed out on a top seeding. But given the aggro over Owen Hargreaves a meeting with Bayern Munich would be less welcome.
From Pot Three CSKA Moscow are lowly in the rankings - but playing in the run up to the Moscow winter, at an odd time of the day will not be appealing. Imagine Ronaldo in the snow.
From Pot Four a trip to Kiev, in The Ukraine, to face Dynamo would round off a miserable draw.
