Chinese man crashes Mercedes S350, vows to only drive Chinese-built cars
Car accidents inspiring bouts of nationalism aren't all that new. However, this could be the shakiest case of it that we've heard of recently. Wang Zhan, the Chinese owner of a Mercedes S350, rear-ended a DongFeng van. In spite of the rather severe damage done to the car, the airbags didn't deploy, and Zhan and his daughter had to make a trip to the hospital. When the medication wore off, Mr. Zhan knew immediately what he needed to do: hold a press conference and announce that he'd only be buying Chinese goods for the rest of his life.
Based on the damage, it looks like he was doing some serious speed when it happened, and it's clear that the airbags should have deployed. Mr. Zhan said Mercedes never gave him a satisfactory answer as to why they didn't. Still, it happens, and we can imagine a number of other vehicles in which such an accident would have prevented Zhan from doing anything else, ever -- like, oh, some models from China. And we wouldn't mind knowing how the DongFeng van fared. Yet while we all know this never would have happened in a Geely, we might recommend that Zhan perhaps try something from Sweden first...

Memang sengal giler la mamat sekor ni, dier yang bawak laju tak hingat sampai sondol belakang van sampai remuk Merc S-class tu, dier bleh salahkan airbag tak kuar lak. Yang bleh selamatkan nyawa cuma Tuhan dan diri sendiri jer. Kalau sendiri bawak laju tak hingat pastu eksiden, salahkan jer la diri sendiri tu. Kalau dia pakai keter buatan China pun benda yang sama bleh berlaku gak.
Mamat sekor ni memang bangang, tak tengok ker hasil2 crash test keter2 China tu? Setakat bandingkan Chevrolet Spark dgn klon dier Chery QQ tu dah cukup laa, memang fail! Bukan setakat klon keter lain jer, crash test pun teruk hasil dier. Kalau bawak laju cam mamat China sengal tu bawak, kalau kuar airbag pun belum tentu nyawa dier bleh selamat. Kalau panggil Jeremy Clarkson citer Top Gear pi letupkan / jahanamkan banyak2 keter China ni serentak kang selamber jer. Tu la hasil produk yang bukan dibuat dengan R&D yang bersungguh2 tapi harapkan tiru design orang, rebadge ataupun buat sendiri tapi tak test, setakat mengharapkan simulasi komputer jer.
Moral of the story: Sebelum nak salahkan keter bila time eksiden tu, salahkan diri sendiri tu bila bawak sampai tak hingat Tuhan pastu eksiden.

2008 FAW Haima H1
The QQ, or the QQ3 when it first came out was hailed as a car for the Chinese people. It was a taste of things to come, for two reasons, firstly the QQ was an exact clone of the Chevrolet Spark, 2) It was the cheapest car ever made at the time in China, basically a car that any office worker could afford to buy with some frugal living.
Chinas upcoming car maker, Haima, released the Haima 3 compact last year, and it looks rather good. Haima are intent on becoming a bigger player in the Chinese market place, and will release a range of cars over the next few years. Their latest offering, unveiled in the below shots for the first time, is Haimas H1 - the mini car that is set to rival Chery QQ!
Last week, we showed pictures of a camouflaged Haimai H1, we didn抰 know what it was, neither did the Chinese motoring press, but Erik gladly told us what it was in the comments box! The H1 is expected to come with a 1.1 engine mated to a 5 speed manual gear box. The tiny H1 measures (LxWxH) 3350mm x 1495 x 1485. The price: 30, to 40,000rmb, want one? Wait until the end of 2008, and it will be on the market.
