Fittipaldi backs Schumacher to shine in 2011
Former world champion Emerson Fittipaldi said he believes Michael Schumacher will be a force to be reckoned with in 2011.
"I had lunch with Ross Brawn [the Mercedes team boss] recently and I think the new car will be much more suited to Michael's driving, oversteering into corners," he told the Times. "The new tyres mean Michael can also develop them to his style and, with a better-balanced car and his incredible belief, he will be a huge contender for the world championship. He can do it.
"He has all of his old ability. In his last race he was there. Every mile you drive in a racing car you learn. Next year he will deliver. When I saw Brawn, his mind was already on 2011. If you're fit physically, you can race on, because you don't lose anything mentally."
And Fittpaldi had a warning for Sebastian Vettel - retaining his F1 crown would be even harder than winning it this season. "The pressure to repeat is huge and, if he takes that pressure and lets it become a negative, it will be very destructive. The first time I realised I was champion was when I read it in a newspaper. It's probably the same for Vettel.
"The problem for him is nothing beats the first time. That and I think [Fernando] Alonso is the most complete driver."

Schumacher demands answers from Mercedes
Michael Schumacher has blamed his car for his disappointing return to Formula One.
The seven-time world champion finished ninth in the drivers' standings, but despite being consistently outpaced by his team-mate Nico Rosberg, Schumacher insisted his Mercedes GP car was to blame.
Schumacher claimed Rosberg had not suffered the same trouble with his car, and revealed he had demanded answers from team principal Ross Brawn and Mercedes boss Norbert Haug.
"I had no problems with Nico," he said "But I told Norbert and Ross that it was time to find explanations.
"The fastest driver is a reference for the other one. You see the data of how he drives, but it didn't work quite so well in the other car. Looking back, there were a few things [wrong] with my car.
"The exhaust got so hot that sometimes the underside of the car burnt or the F-Duct was triggered in parts of the track where it shouldn't have been. But I have not spoken publicly about them; I preferred to discuss it internally."

Schumi: No, I'm not the greatest
Michael Schumacher has finally put an end to the debate over whether he is the greatest driver to have ever raced. And the answer is "no."
With 91 grand prix victories and an unprecedented seven Drivers' Championship titles to his name, Schumacher is - statistically at least - the best driver to have ever competed in Formula One.
But given that he never raced against the likes of Juan Manuel Fangio, who claimed five World titles, and had only two full seasons up against Ayrton Senna, who won three Drivers' crowns, the debate is always on as to whether Schumacher is the best.
And now the German has weighed in on the topic.
"No, you have to talk F1 driver, there so many different categories," he told CNN when asked if he was the 'greatest driver or greatest F1 driver?'
"If you take Sports Car, DTM - my brother is doing that, I tried that, no way I could be that successful compared to what I have been in F1, I didn't have the feeling."
Another question that has always dogged the German throughout his days in Formula One is whether he is 'prepared to win at all costs?'
"No, it has to be within a frame of what's allowed, but within that frame, yes, I push things to the borderline."

Formula One’s most successful driver, Michael Schumacher, believes he can add an eighth drivers’ championship trophy to his cabinet in 2011 or, failing that, 2012.
The German had a troubled comeback to the sport in 2010 which saw him struggling to get to grips with the weaker front tyres, whilst his team-mate almost managed to outscore him two to one.
Schumacher though looked to be getting to grips with the car toward the end of the season, and it’s this which has built his confidence for the upcoming season.
When asked if he thought he could be the champion in 2011, he replied: "Absolutely. Look, we have a three-year project. Very clearly right now, we are not where we want to be. We've put a lot of effort into coming back and are optimistic we have a chance," he said in an interview with F1 Racing.
"But in the history of F1, when does it ever happen that you come back straightaway from this level to win in just one year? Very rarely," he said adamantly.
"So I'm sure we can fight for wins this year and we might be able to fight for the championship. I hope so. I'm here on a mission and I want to succeed. I want to perform and I'm going to put 100 per cent into it. And if that's not the case in 2011, then we will have to do it in the final year."

Mercedes reveals first photo of MGP W02
Mercedes GP has made public the first shot of its 2011 car, the MGP W02, which will be officially launched on Tuesday morning prior to the start of pre-season testing at Valencia’s Ricardo Tormo circuit.
Following double title glory as Brawn GP in 2009, newly-branded Mercedes GP managed only a trio of podium finishes last season before rounding the year off fourth in the Constructors’ Championship. For 2011, its driver line-up of Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg is retained.
With testing kicking off at 9am local time (GMT +1) on Tuesday, its run-up will feature a selection of car launches at the same venue, with Sauber and Lotus Renault GP unveiling their respective contenders on Monday morning before Mercedes, Toro Rosso and Champions Red Bull do likewise on Tuesday.
Also launching on Monday will be Team Lotus, whose challenger will be revealed live via the squad’s website at 5am GMT. |
