Virgin Atlantic jet lands safely with landing gear problemA Virgin Atlantic passenger plane has landed safely at London's Gatwick Airport after a "technical issue" with part of its main landing gear.

Virgin flight VS43 was travelling from Gatwick to Las Vegas when it had to return to the West Sussex airport.

The aircraft circled repeatedly over north Devon and the south coast of England apparently to burn off fuel.

The Boeing 747 made a bumpy but safe landing just before 16:00 GMT. Airport emergency services were on the runway.

A Virgin spokesman said: "Virgin Atlantic can confirm that flight VS43 on December 29, travelling to McCarran International Airport Las Vegas, returned to Gatwick due to a technical issue with one of the landing gears.

"The aircraft is preparing to implement a non-standard landing procedure at Gatwick airport. A further update will be issued as soon as possible."

Gatwick confirmed there was "a Virgin Atlantic aircraft looking to return to Gatwick."

A spokesman said: "We can confirm that Virgin Atlantic flight VS043 which departed Gatwick Airport at around 11.45am is returning to Gatwick after the aircraft developed a technical fault.

"In line with standard procedure, emergency services are on standby at the airport purely as a precaution."

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was at the scene.

Eyewitnesses reported the jet was flying at relatively low altitude and the pilot appeared to be trying to "shake" the landing gear down.

People were tracking the seemingly erratic movements of the plane in real time via smartphone apps like FlightRadar24, which collects radar data. Its website was down because of the volume of users.

Those in the south of the UK who could see the plane circling from the ground were sharing pictures of it, including images of the damaged landing gear on social media networks. The hashtag #VS43 - the number of the flight - was trending on Twitter.

AsiaAir Flight 8501: What Are Pitot Tubes And How Could They Affect Flight?

Anyone watching the news this morning has heard more than one expert commenting on the possibility that pitot tubes are implicated in the disappearance of the Airbus A-320 aircraft on a flight from Surabaya, Indonesia to Singapore.  The speculation arises because the aircraft requested a change in altitude to avoid bad weather and contact with the aircraft was lost shortly thereafter.  Meteorological conditions in the area included heavy thunderstorms. While it is too early to speculate on what could have caused AirAsia’s disappearance, it’s not too early to explain what the experts are talking about and how it could affect the aircraft.

Pitot tubes have been a concern with Airbus aircraft for some time – icing being the specific issue – but became of critical concern after the crash of Air France Flight 447, an Airbus A-330 aircraft, on June 1, 2009 on a flight from Rio de Janiero to Paris.  That aircraft crashed during a thunderstorm over the Atlantic Ocean.  The French accident investigation agency – equivalent to the US NTSB – determined that the probable cause of the accident was inconsistent readings between the pitot tubes (likely caused by the formation of ice crystals) leading to the autopilot being disconnected, with pilot error thereafter resulting in the plane being flown too slowly, causing an aerodynamic stall.

Pitot tubes are mounted near the nose of the airplane and measure the air force flowing through them as the aircraft moves through the atmosphere.  These measurements are critical to ensuring proper air speed; flying too slowly can cause the plane to stall and flying too fast can cause a structural break up.  If an aircraft encounters icing conditions at altitude – where moisture and very cold temperatures can combine – and icing forms on the pitot tubes, this can cause a blockage or partial blockage of one or more of the tubes.  This in turn can lead to incorrect readings of the air speed.  The pitot tubes also provide vital information to the computers that are critical to the operation of modern aircraft.  If the pitot tube data is not accurate, incorrect information will be provided to the pilots and will also be fed into the computer managing the flight operation.

Since the issue of Airbus pitot tubes being vulnerable to icing became known, actions have been taken by Airbus and European regulatory agencies to require replacement of the pitot tubes with tubes that are believed to be less vulnerable to icing.  The latest pitot tube-related Airworthiness Directive was issued in October of this year.  It is too early to know whether the pitot tubes on this aircraft would have been affected by the latest directive.

in this region, outside air temperature at 32000 feet is around -40 to -45 deg C. Temperature at pitot head slightly higher sebab semasa pesawat merempuh udara , some heat produced, total air temperature kat pitot head tu lagi berkurang, around -10 to -15 deg. Lagi pun pitot tube tu heated automatically dari masa mula start engine sampai lah ke shutdown. kemungkinan pitot head blocked by icing tu ada tapi probability sangat lah minimum.

capt Irianto ni sangat berpengalaman, bekas fighter pilot TNI-AU, was with Adam Air sebelum joined Indonesia AA. Even AirFrance incident tu, kalau pilot dia bertundah back to basic flying, ada kemungkinan untuk selamat.
