Man Utd step up midfielder search
Manchester United are renewing efforts to boost their midfield ahead of the new season, with Villarreal's Marcos Senna reported to be their main target.
"We are trying very hard to get another midfield player in," said manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who has previously admitted being interested in Senna.
Newspaper reports suggest United will this week stage talks with Villarreal, who have said they might sell Senna.
The Brazilian-born 30-year-old is likely to cost in the region of £4m |

Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes will miss three matches after an independent disciplinary commission rejected United's appeal against their suspensions.
The pair's punishments were first issued by the FA last Wednesday, 9 August. Rooney was reported for violent conduct and Scholes for foul play following their dismissals against FC Porto in the LG Amsterdam Tournament on Friday 4 August.
The suspensions start on 23 August, making the players unavailable for Charlton away that day, Watford away on 26 August and Tottenham at home on 9 September.
The Club has no comment to make on the outcome of the appeal. |

Davids: Carrick will miss me
Tottenham midfielder Edgar Davids has conceded that Manchester United new-boy Michael Carrick has made the right decision in joining the Premiership giants.
The pair forged a strong relationship in the middle of Spurs' midfield last season, helping Carrick to catch the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Carrick completed his ?18.6 million switch to Old Trafford at the end of July but Davids has warned the 25-year-old that he will miss his presence alongside him next season.
Despite the obvious disappointment of losing such an important member of Martin Jol's squad, David's has backed the move and believes the players at White Hart Lane can step up to replace the England international.
"People ask me if I will miss playing with Michael Carrick but I think he will miss playing with me," Davids is quoted in the Star.
"I'm happy for him because he has worked hard and when a club like Manchester United comes knocking on your door, it's very hard to refuse them. |

Diarra fires Real Lyon warning
Manchester United target Mahamadou Diarra has made his intentions clear as to where he will be playing his football next season.
The sought-after 25-year-old midfielder has been a long-term target of Sir Alex Ferguson but it is Real Madrid who are very much the subject of his affections.
Diarra has stated his utmost desire to move to the Bernabeu, urging his current paymasters to lower their demands as he strives for a switch to the Spanish capital.
French champions Lyon are currently holding out for ?35 million (?23.7 million) but with Real having already been busy in the transfer market an accord is far from being struck.
"I can? wait anymore,'' he told L'Equipe. "On Monday, Real Madrid told Lyon they wanted a meeting to discuss my transfer.
"The result is Lyon turned a deaf ear. Then, they said if Real want a rendezvous, there is just one solution, come with a ?35 million cheque.
"Do you realise, ?35 million!?
"I finally had a phone call with chairman Jean-Michel Aulas. I told him my desire to join Real. Obviously he didn? hear me.
"A club like Real offers you to wear his shirt; it happens just once in a career.
"I can? stand the idea that they refuse me that opportunity in demanding ?35 million just to talk around a table."
Diarra claims that he will do everything in his power to agitate a move, even going as far as to suggest he would entertain the thought of going AWOL in his homeland Mali.
"I am not Michael Essien, I won? be in a sulk day after day.
"At the moment, I am with Malian team, and I should be back at Lyon on Thursday.
"If at that time the situation has not evolved, I will tell them what I am thinking about all that.
"I am keen to do anything, not resuming training-sessions with Lyon or even leaving for Mali if the club doesn? negotiate with Real.
"It is very clear in my mind, I want to leave for Real.
"What annoys me the most, is the fact l?L tries to gain time, even for a meeting with Real. That is really a lack of respect towards the player and such a club."
Meanwhile, reports emanating from the French press have linked Lyon with a move for Liverpool striker Florent Sinama-Pongolle.
The French hit-man looks to be on his way out of Anfield but had previously been strongly linked with a switch to Spain, with Osasuna his primary suitor.
However, Liverpool are keen to offload the player on a permanent basis, which would suit Lyon, while Osasuna are more interested in an initial loan deal
