Credit lawsuit adds to Manabu Oshio's troubles
Fri, October 15, 2010 (10:43pm EDT)

Manabu Oshio (32) is currently in the process of appealing the 30-month prison sentence he received in his criminal trial last month, but it was learned on Friday that he has also been hit with a civil lawsuit in a separate matter. A Nagoya-based credit firm is seeking compensation and possession of Oshio's car due to several months of missed payments.

In 2008, Oshio purchased a Mercedes Benz, priced at approximately 9.5 million yen. At the time, he signed a contract with the credit firm to pay for the car in the form of a loan, and to serve as his guarantor. In return, Oshio was expected to repay the loan in monthly installments over the next 5 years. However, he has default on his payments since February of this year, so the company filed with the Tokyo District Court to receive possession of the vehicle and 6.3 million yen to cover the remainder of the loan.

Oshio was arrested in August of last year for drug possession and his involvement in the related death of a Ginza hostess. In February, he applied for bail from his detention center as he awaited trial. At the time, his lawyers had prepared 10 million yen, but bail was ultimately denied. Oshio finally underwent trial in September and received a 30-month sentence for drug charges, but he was acquitted of negligence regarding the hostess' death.

Oshio's defense immediately appealed the sentence and has begun preparing for the appeal trial. In the meantime, Oshio was released on bail for 10 million yen earlier this month, but he was back in court on October 15 for the first hearing in the civil case. Oshio's lawyer did not contest the lawsuit, so there will be no further hearings. The judge will announce the decision on October 29.

Masaharu Fukuyama plans record-setting tour for 2011
Sat, October 16, 2010 (11:04pm EDT)

After a year of focusing on the taiga drama "Ryomaden," actor and singer Masaharu Fukuyama (41) plans to spend next year focused on his music. Starting in February 2011, he will go on his largest concert tour ever, scheduled to last five months and expected to draw a record-setting total attendance of 600,000 fans.

Fukuyama will kick off the tour on February 24 at Osaka-jo Hall and finish on July 3 at Ehime-ken Budokan. He will perform 46 concerts in 17 cities in front of roughly 600,000 people, surpassing his previous personal record of 500,000 from last year's tour. In fact, that number is said to be a record for any Japanese solo artist, topping the likes of Kazumasa Oda (530,000 in 2008) and Namie Amuro (500,000 in 2009).

The tour will take him to several parts of the country where he has not performed in a very long time. For example, his last concert in Wakayama was in 1990 (the year of his debut), and his shows in Aomori, Nagano, Mie, and Kagoshima will be his first ones there in 17 years.

In particular, Kagoshima was one of the areas where "Ryomaden" was shot. The tour will also stop at other "Ryomaden" filming locations such as Shizuoka and Hiroshima.

Despite his busy schedule with "Ryomaden," Fukuyama has managed to find time to work on his music. Last month, he announced a best album titled "THE BEST BANG!!" for release on November 17. He is also set to perform four concerts in Yokohama at the end of December.

Hitoshi Matsumoto working on next film
Sun, October 17, 2010 (6:48am EDT)

Comedian Hitoshi Matsumoto (47) is back in the director's chair for his third full-length film. Although the title and release window are currently undecided, it has been revealed that the lead role will be played by a man named Takaaki Nomi, who is not professionally in show business.

Matsumoto decided to cast Nomi in his new movie due to his unique personality. He described Nomi as being both the world's most and least interesting guy - since Nomi doesn't think of himself as interesting at all, he is interesting from the perspective that nobody could be that uninteresting.

Nomi currently works at a bar in Shinjuku's Golden Gai neighborhood. However, he has previously appeared on two of Matsumoto's variety shows, "Hataraku Ossan Ningyou" and "Hataraku Ossan Gekijo."

Matsumoto himself starred in his first two movies, "Dainipponjin" and "Symbol." It is unknown whether he will appear in the new film.

Boom Boom Satellites in NYC
October 19, 2010

http://www.japan-zone.com/modern/pix/j/japan_cmj2010.jpg

The nice folks at New York - Tokyo have asked us to plug an upcoming live appearance in the Big Apple by one of Japan's best rock artists. Boom Boom Satellites, supported by alternative rock band Zamza, will be playing as part of the CMJ2010 Music Marathon & Film Festival. You can check them out on Wednesday, October 20 at Bowery Poetry Club. Organizers said, "this is a special night that CMJ and New York - Tokyo have put together. CMJ badge holders will enjoy the whole night for free and only $10 for those without. Tickets will be gone very quick." You can find out more and pick up tickets here.

Brit music magazine NME has described BBS as "Like The Prodigy fighting Underworld with bloody big sticks." And their CMJ bio says the Tokyo rockers "offer a brutal clash of high-tech hooks, renegade rhythm and distortion-drenched guitar." Meanwhile, two members of Zamza are probably better known for their work with the hugely successful Judy and Mary. In a literary twist, the band's vocalist is also a winner of the prestigious Akutagawa Prize as well as a movie director.
