Filming ‘Dendam Pontianak’ was horrific, says directors

September 2, 2019 Entertainment, Movies

By MUMTAJ BEGUM

With a title like Dendam Pontianak, it’s a given that it is a horror flick. However what -directors Glen Goei and Gavin Yap didn’t anticipate was that the -filming process was going to be a horrible experience as well.

After a serene one-week shoot in Tronoh, Perak, the cast and crew made their way to Hulu Langat, Selangor, to shoot their next scenes.

Here, however, the filming had to be stopped almost on a daily basis as the location was constantly bombarded by heavy rain.

Singaporean Goei mentioned during an interview: “It rained every day, and sometimes it rained for three to four hours, heavy rain nonstop.

“It was a very difficult shoot because of the weather. (After a downpour) all of us had to shovel gravel onto the puddles of water just so we could continue filming.”

Lead actor Remy Ishak recalled the weather clearly too. The 37-year-old said the rain was -disruptive to his acting process.

“Just as you are getting ready to cry for an emotional scene, we have to stop as the rain started to pour. Then you have to hold it all in until the rain stops. It created havoc to my emotional state quite a bit,” the actor said.

Despite the challenges, Dendam Pontianak’s shoot was completed and the movie will hit cinemas on Sept 12.

Set in the 1960s, the joint Singapore-Malaysia production tells of a newly married couple who suddenly experiences a -hiccup in their domestic bliss when a pontianak enters their home and lives. But this is no ordinary female spirit of a woman that had died during childbirth; it’s a supernatural being that seeks revenge against the man who didn’t keep his promise.

Playing the role of this vengeful spirit is Nur Fazura, who says the audiences can expect a different kind of pontianak in this film.

“What’s interesting about my character is, she doesn’t wear a kaftan, but a red kebaya. Also this is a woman we can relate to – she is someone who falls in love completely with a man, who promises her forever. When he breaks that promise, she comes back,” she said.

One thing that the kebaya does immediately is hark back to old classic Malay films in which the outfit used to feature heavily.

That is exactly Goei’s intent. The 57-year-old confessed, as a child, he loved watching the black-and-white movies produced by Malay Film Productions (formed by Runme Shaw and Run Run Shaw).

“Any shows and reruns set in the 1970s on TV, I would watch them. Although I can’t remember the plotlines very well, I just remember the sceneries of a kampung with banana trees, coconut trees and tropical jungle in the background. It was exotic and mysterious to me.

“Also, I grew up next to a kampung, so I was familiar with the sounds of a kampung – being woken up to roosters crowing, etc. It was just something I grew up with.

“Having not seen elements like these in films any more, I wanted to pay homage to that classical -horror but give it a contemporary spin,” said Goei, who has been active in Singapore theatre since the late 1980s and has directed films such as Forever Fever and The Blue Mansion.

As it turned out, Remy shares Goei’s love of this era.

“I love working in films that are set in the olden days. Seeing all the old cars and buildings come alive on the set, and wearing the clothes from that era are something I enjoy tremendously,” said Remy, who also time-travelled to yesteryears in last year’s period piece Pulang.

It was one of the reasons why Remy agreed to work in Dendam Pontianak, although he had -trepidation about the genre.

“I don’t like watching horror movies,” explained the Melaka-born actor.

“I used to enjoy them, but now that I live alone, my imagination gets the better of me when I watch horror movies. But, I have no -problems acting in one.”

Goei did hit a snag when they were looking for the right actress to play the pontianak. “I just couldn’t find a lead actress that I really wanted,” admitted the -director. His discovery of Fazura came in a most unusual manner – his mother recommended her.

“I was visiting my mum and -talking to her about the difficulties I was facing in finding the lead actress. And my mum was praising this girl on TV, the host of Facing Up To Fazura, saying she’s so pretty and just so full of life.”

A meeting later, Fazura nabbed the role.

“It was a two-year process to cast all these actors, it wasn’t easy. This is a difficult role, and the shoot, as it turned out, was a challenging one. So for me, it was important to find an actress who was willing to take directions,” said Goei.

Others in the cast are Hisyam Hamid, Nam Ron, Tony Eusoff and Shenty Feliziana.

Dendam Pontianak also boasts the talent of Datuk Sri Siti Nurhaliza, who sings the film’s theme song, Kasihku Selamanya, composed by Aubrey Suwito and lyrics by Ad Samad.

As to why he chose to tell a -pontianak’s tale, Goei answered: “I’m not afraid of ghosts, or spirits. In fact, I’m very curious to know about their lives and their stories; why they still haven’t crossed to the other world, there must be a reason.

“As a filmmaker and as a -storyteller, I’m always curious about the stories of ghosts and -spirits. What is unusual about Dendam Pontianak is that, I’m -telling the story from her point of view because I’m curious to know, why has this character been demonised through the centuries?

“And in Asia, in particular, which is a patriarchal society, why is it the woman that’s demonised? That’s the question that I asked myself when I began writing this story.”

Dendam Pontianak opens at GSC cinemas nationwide on Sept 12.

‘Vanity has no place in what I do’ says Pontianak star Nur Fazura

Pontianak star Nur Fazura likes going bare faced while acting, but she is still very much the fashionista off-screen

Jasmine Lim
Sep 03, 2019 06:00 am

Nur Fazura may be considered one of the most beautiful celebrities in Malaysia.

But when it comes to her craft, taking pride in her appearance is of low priority.

In Singapore filmmaker Glen Goei's new period horror-romance Revenge Of The Pontianak, which is currently showing here, the 35-year-old actress plays the titular character from folklore.

While Fazura looks gorgeous in flashbacks, she does not shy away from appearing quite the opposite as the spine-chilling spirit of a pregnant woman who was killed by her lover (Remy Ishak).

Transforming into the Pontianak took three hours, but she enjoyed the experience.

She told The New Paper when she was in town for the movie's gala premiere last week: "It's not always I get to dress as such a character. I don't care much about looking pretty on-screen. I love when directors request (a bare face), because so many directors love made-up, beautiful actresses on screen.

"Being an artist, you have to be raw and vulnerable. When people look at me in real life, they think I'm untouchable.

"But when I'm acting, people can actually see my vulnerability and I love that. Vanity has no place in what I do."

For Fazura's more glamorous scenes, she is clad in a figure-hugging red lace kebaya - a colour which can be interpreted as a symbol of her character's ardour in love and anger in vengeance after her beloved's betrayal.

She admitted getting into the traditional outfit was a challenge because there were "lots of corsets and girdles underneath" and "padding on the chest and buttocks".

She said: "Women occasionally opt for (shapewear), especially when wearing certain types of dresses. At certain times, it is required - to help you stand taller and keep (the) shape.

"The kebaya is so iconic, I loved wearing it. I had so many different colours during the whole film."

Fazura's own style evolution has come a long way since her early days in showbiz in 2002.

She now seeks the sweet spot between femininity and functionality when it comes to her fashion choices.

Said the founder of her own fashion line Fazbulous, who has 4.7 million followers on Instagram: "I went from being a girly, sexy teenager to grungy badass woman (in) loose jeans and baggy stuff. I feel so comfortable in loose clothing. Nobody can tell if I'm fat or thin. I can eat whatever I want.

"I used to wear more revealing dresses. As I grew older, I realised it is unnecessary and prefer to leave more to the imagination."

Although she is all about "dressing for the occasion", Fazura said she tends to be more fashionable overseas.

She said: "I'm comfortable wearing jeans and tees back home, like when I go out to buy groceries. Although I do dress up when my husband (Malaysian actor Fattah Amin) takes me out on dates.

"(And) I love dressing up when travelling. It's the time when you relax and walk your runway."

GLAM FAZURA

Fazura glammed up in an elegant black pantsuit boasting a dramatic purple feathered neckline from her favourite designer Rizman Ruzaini to accept the Asean Most Inspiring Female Actress of the Year accolade at this year's McMillan Woods Global Awards.

She said: "Rizman and I think alike when coming up with an outfit. I wanted the pantsuit, and he suggested the feathers to go with it."

FASHION WEEK FAZURA

She "threw together this outfit spontaneously" for the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week Ready To Wear 2019 press conference.

Everything came straight from her wardrobe, and she topped off the black belted shirt with white piping with a head band as a quick fix for lazy hair days.

FEMININE FAZURA

It was summer in Los Angeles, and Fazura felt this printed maxi frock suited the season.

She said: "I should have worn sandals, but I went shopping so wanted to put on a nice heel. The dress matched the bag too."

CASUAL FAZURA

Fazura wanted a look that was both casual and chic, as she had a full day of business meetings in Beverly Hills.

She said: "One of them was with a friend, so I didn't want to look too formal."

She ended up throwing a white blazer on top of a slogan tee, jeans and Fendi shoulder bag.

a beautiful homage to - and rethinking of - the pontiank
jfwearspink31 August 2019

I shrieked, laughed, cried, closed my eyes, held my ears, thoroughly enjoyed myself ...

'Dendam Pontianak' is not only a homage to, but a rethinking of, the pontianak narrative - one which attempts to open our eyes to her world, which opens our hearts to her ...

I would unreservedly recommend this beautiful film to anyone and everyone ...

Excellent tribute and reimagining of the Pontianak genre
shaungohwm31 August 2019

I love love love this re-imagining of the Pontianak genre! It's different from the usual jumpscares. Instead, it focuses on proper storytelling with elegant art direction, camerawork and sound design. The ending nails it for me. I am so proud we have a movie of this high production quality. I think the best tribute to a well-know genre is when you are brave to reimagine something new instead of repeating the same formula - and this movie does so for me!

A Fair Attempt At A Classic
var_rien29 August 2019

I had high expectations for an entertaining, possibly powerful retelling of this classic horror tale by Sifu Glen and Gavin (et al).

However, while I did not come away from the movie feeling that it was a failure , I felt disappointed at the movie's lack of oomph.

To me , it failed to conjure an atmosphere of eeriness and foreboding , and I thought its scenes and momentum lacked in the thrill and horror departments quite a bit .

The acting and script seemed adequate , and I especially enjoyed the artistry/cinematography of the scenes set in Kampong setting/reflecting lifestyle then.

I look forward to a future rendition that will also include that -all too classic , too good to be missed - comic relief scene - the Malay Satay man and his two (Chinese and Indian) friends /customers , all whom come face to face with and flee in terror from the Pontianak!

Good try please keep it up

Low cost production, horrible zombie movie....wait.... it's suppose to be a horror movie isn't it or am I missing something? Great cast but what a letdown with a predictable and lousy plot.Seriously Glen.... I think u can do better.
