Van Nistelrooy joins Hamburg

Ruud van Nistelrooy has joined Hamburg on a one-and-a-half-year contract from Real Madrid, the German club have announced on their website.

Van Nistelrooy has been linked with a host of clubs recently in a bid to secure more playing time, with West Ham and Tottenham just two of the clubs that were interested in the former Manchester United striker.

And Hamburg have confirmed they have won the race to sign the 33-year-old Holland international. Coach Bruno Labbadia was delighted to have secured the services of the prolific Dutchman.

He told the club website: ''Ruud has proven his qualities impressively at some of Europe's top clubs. I am convinced that he will also score some important goals for HSV.

''It just emphasises the reputation of our club that a player like Ruud van Nistelrooy decides to join Hamburg.''

Van Nistelrooy was equally thrilled to have become a Hamburg player.

''I am really happy that it has worked out,'' he said. ''I am also looking forward to Monday when I come to Hamburg. I had great talks with both Bernd Hoffmann (Hamburg president) and Bruno Labbadia (coach) and had a very positive impression from the very beginning.

''HSV is a great club with a strong team and big ambitions. I also have big ambitions.''

The 33-year-old finished as the leading scorer in La Liga during his first season with Madrid in 2006-07, but the latter part of his time with the Spanish club has been plagued by injuries and he has managed just a handful of appearances this term, including only one in the league.

But Van Nistelrooy will leave the Bernabeu with nothing but good things to say about his treatment in the Spanish capital.

''I have got to say that Real have behaved really well,'' he said. ''The management have not put any obstacles in my way. I think a video will be shown before the game (tomorrow) and then I will do a lap of honour. I really had a fantastic time in Madrid.''

Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Toni Kroos and Bayern Munich midfielder Thomas Mueller were handed a World Cup incentive on Thursday after being named in Germany's squad for a two-day performance test.

Captain Michael Ballack, who will be in action for Chelsea, will not attend the Stuttgart event on Tuesday and Wednesday while striker Lukas Podolski and defender Heiko Westermann have also been excluded due to injury.

The two-day performance check is part of a process to test the state of the players as coach Joachim Loew gradually narrows down the squad for the June 11-July 11 World Cup in South Africa.

"The 30-member roster includes players who have played a role in our team in the past months as well as younger player who have prospects beyond the 2010 World Cup," Loew said on the federation website (www.dfb.de).

"It is this circle of players that we will be intensively monitoring in the next few months."

Defenders Dennis Aogo of Hamburg SV, VfB Stuttgart's Christian Traesch as well as Stoke City's Robert Huth, who were part of Germany's Asian Tour last year, were recalled.

Experienced defensive midfielder Torsten Frings was told on Wednesday he would not be called up as Loew has ruled him out of his tournament plans. Real Madrid defender Christoph Metzelder was also not called up.

Germany, who have been drawn in a group with Australia, Serbia and Ghana, have their first friendly match this year against Argentina on March 3.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Rene Adler (Bayer Leverkusen), Manuel Neuer (Schalke 04), Tim Wiese (Werder Bremen);

Defenders: Dannis Aogo (Hamburg SV), Andreas Beck (Hoffenheim), Jerome Boateng (Hamburg SV), Arne Friedrich (Hertha Berlin), Robert Huth (Stoke City), Philipp Lahm (Bayern Munich), Per Mertesacker (Werder Bremen), Marcel Schaefer (VfL Wolfsburg), Serdar Tasci (VfB Stuttgart), Christian Traesch (VfB Stuttgart).

Midfielders: Christian Gentner (VfL Wolfsburg), Thomas Hitzlsperger (VfB Stuttgart), Aaron Hunt (Werder Bremen), Marcell Jansen (Hamburg SV), Sami Khedira (VfB Stuttgart), Toni Kroos (Bayer Leverkusen), Marko Marin (Werder Bremen), Thomas Mueller (Bayern Munich), Mesut Ozil (Werder Bremen), Simon Rolfes (Bayer Leverkusen), Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich), Piotr Trochowski (Hamburg SV).

Strikers: Cacau (VfB Stuttgart), Mario Gomez (Bayern Munich), Patrick Helmes (Bayer Leverkusen), Stefan Kiessling (Bayer Leverkusen), Miroslav Klose (Bayern Munich).

Report: Juventus Goalkeeper Buffon Wants To Leave With Manchester City & Bayern Munich On Standby:pompom:

Buffon's less than cheerful vibes could prompt him to leave for pastures new, according to reports.

Gianluigi Buffon wants to get away from the ongoing troubles at Juventus, with Bayern Munich and Manchester City both ready to provide some relief.

Tuttosport claims Buffon has had enough of enduring dissapointment following the Old Lady's third straight defeat, a 2-1 home loss to Roma on Saturday.

The goalkeeper is quoted as having said: "Always on the counter attack...that's enough, I cannot take it anymore," as he walked through the Stadio Olimpico tunnel after the game.

Juve are now four points off the Champions League pace, and failure to qualify for that competition could prove a further strain on the 32-year-old.

Whilst Buffon has always showed the club a strong sense of loyalty post Calciopoli, the recent slide has prompted him to change his view.

Both Bayern Munich and Manchester City are said to be tracking the goalkeeper, despite his agent Silvano Martina claiming last week that there are no plans for a move.

Bundesliga - Van Gaal: 'Fans forced Braafheid out'

Eurosport - Tue, 02 Feb 13:50:00 2010

New Celtic signing Edson Braafheid left Bayern Munich because he was unpopular with the fans, boss Louis van Gaal admitted.

The 26-year-old left-back only joined the German giants in a summer deal from Twente, but he lost his place to Holger Badstuber, 20, and failed to win over the supporters.

"He was not rated by the fans in Munich," Van Gaal told Bavarian television. "In such a case, it is better to let the player go and leave the club.

"Edson is an excellent defender. He has just been unlucky here.

"I really hope the fans in Glasgow help him."

Netherlands international Braafheid joined Celtic until the end of the season, accompanied by the high-profile signing of Robbie Keane from Tottenham and a similar loan deal for Fulham's Diomansy Kamara.

Bayern, meanwhile, also let Luca Toni, Andreas Ottl and Breno leave the club.

Bundesliga - Bremen reach German Cup final
Reuters - Tue, 23 Mar 21:42:00 2010

Holders Werder Bremen advanced to their 10th German Cup final after beating second-division Augsburg 2-0.

Germany international Marko Marin slotted home on 30 minutes and Peruvian Claudio Pizarro sealed the win with a curled low drive six minutes from time.

Bremen will defend their title on May 15 in Berlin against the winner of the other semi-final between Schalke and Bayern Munich, who meet on Wednesday.

Bremen dominated possession from the start but had to wait until the 30th minute to break the Augsburg resistance when Marin sliced through with a one-two pass off playmaker Mesut Ozil and wrong-footed keeper Simon Jentzsch with a well-placed shot.

Bremen fell back after the goal as Augsburg pressed the hosts and they hit the woodwork when Michael Thurk beat keeper Tim Wiese but saw the ball hit the far post and agonisingly roll across the goal-mouth before being cleared.

Thurk, the second division's top scorer with 21 goals in 27 matches, kept up the pressure after the break but Pizarro, picked out by a Torsten Frings free-kick, struck with a low drive in the 84th minute to send Bremen through.

Bundesliga - Robben scorcher sees Bayern into final
Reuters - Wed, 24 Mar 21:45:00 2010

Arjen Robben's spectacular extra-time strike took Bayern Munich into the German Cup final for the 17th time with a 1-0 win at Schalke.

Bayern will meet Werder Bremen, who beat second division Augsburg 2-0, in the final in Berlin on May 15.

Dutchman Robben grabbed the winner in the 112th minute of an otherwise lacklustre game when he raced around 50 yards down the right, cut back into the middle and released a curling left-foot shot into the top corner.

Bayern, who have won a record 14 titles in 16 final appearances, are top of the Bundesliga and face Manchester United in the Champions League quarter-finals next week.

"Robben dribbled a lot and still had power to decide the match like that. That's superb," Bayern coach Louis van Gaal said.

"I think we were superior in both tactics and fitness. We were patient and luckily he (Robben) made that goal," he told ARD Television.

In a subdued first half, the visitors should have scored when Robben raced clear in the 10th minute but his shot from 15 yards was saved by keeper Manuel Neuer who kept his cool long enough to deflect it wide.

Both teams laboured with their quick passing game on an extremely rough pitch and Schalke's solid defence, the best in the league this season, left Robben with little space to move.

The hosts set a fierce pace early in the second half, coming close through Croatia international Ivan Rakitic and striker Kevin Kuranyi but quickly fell back again.

With both teams looking to prefer penalties to settle the one-legged semi-final, Robben exploded down the wing, shrugging off three defenders in the process, and beat Neuer, who just got a touch to the ball.

Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery rules out move to Chelsea or Manchester United
French winger admits he will only leave Germany for Spain...

Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery has ruled out a move to potential suitors Manchester United and Chelsea by insisting that if he was to leave the German club, Spain would be his destination.

"I haven't made a decision about my future yet. I still have a lot of doubts about what's best for me, but I have some preferences. If I decide to leave Bayern Munich, it will be for a Spanish club," said Ribery to Sport Bild.

"I have to think about what my family wants as well and my wife would be delighted to move to Spain. She doesn't like all the rain and snow and is reluctant to go to England.

"It's now up to me to decide whether I want to stay at Bayern or join a Spanish giant such as Barcelona or Real Madrid. Whatever my decision will be, I want to sign a five-year contract or so if I sign a deal somewhere."

Ribery is being plagued by injury this term and has dropped to 224th spot in the Castrol Rankings as a result.
