Diego Forlán has revealed that he got the boot from Manchester United because of the length of his studs. Forlán admitted he defied Sir Alex Ferguson over his choice of footwear.
The Uruguay striker, who is set return to England with Atlético Madrid to face Chelsea in the Champions league group stage on 21 October, said: "Ferguson wanted me to play with long studs, the interchangeable ones that suit wet pitches, but I feel more comfortable in short ones.
"I agreed to change but I didn't and, against Chelsea, I slipped in front of goal and wasted a chance.
"Afterwards, I rushed to the dressing room to change boots but Ferguson caught me. He grabbed the boots and threw them. That was my last game for United."
The match, on 15 August 2004, saw Forlán used as a 73rd-minute substitute as United lost 1-0 to José Mourinho's Chelsea. Forlán, who was signed by Ferguson on the recommendation of his brother Martin, then the United chief scout, for £7.5m, scored just 10 goals in 63 league appearances, and 17 in 98 appearances in all competitions.
Forlán has since enjoyed a highly successful career in Spain since he left United for Villarreal just a week after that fateful Chelsea match, twice winning the European Golden Boot as the continent's leading goalscorer.
And he admits that he has now buried the hatchet with Ferguson, and says the United manager even asks his advice on possible South American signings.
Forlán said: "When we were in London [with Villarreal before a Champions League game against Arsenal] Ferguson showed up at our hotel. I still have a good relationship with Sir Alex and his brother Martin. We have conversations and sometimes he asks me about South American players I might know of."

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed local police had to step in after a fan with a laser targeted his Manchester United players in Istanbul.
United opened their quest to reach a third successive Champions League final by beating Besiktas 1-0.
Paul Scholes nodded home the winner 13 minutes from time, sealing a game where the visitors were on top without managing to make their superiority tell.
But the game was not without incident, with Ferguson revealing Jonny Evans was among those picked out by the idiotic fan.
"It was in the first half, although thankfully the police did something about it," said the United boss. "They managed to get the culprit, which is good because I noticed it particularly on Jonny Evans. It seemed to be on him all the time."
Ferguson was also alerted to a security problem behind his dug-out, although he was eager not to make an issue of that. "Someone mentioned it to me, but I never saw anything," he said. I do know the fans made the loudest noise I have ever heard. They never stopped the whole night."
United managed to overcome that handicap, with Scholes making the headlines for all the right reasons after his red card at Tottenham on Saturday. The veteran midfielder responded quickest after Nani saw his blistering shot saved by Hakan Arikan.
"Nani was a bit unlucky not to score himself but Paul Scholes did what he does best. It was a typical Paul Scholes goal," said Ferguson.
The United manager was delighted with his team's overall display, particularly Antonio Valencia, who was making his Champions League debut following his £17 million summer arrival from Wigan.
"Antonio was always a threat," said Ferguson. "He got to the byline so many times and really we should have done better. He has got the potential to be a really good player. He is powerful and strong, with a lot of enthusiasm. He is very quick, with good balance and in a year's time he will have developed more parts of his game."
One player who did not look best pleased to have his evening curtailed was Wayne Rooney.
Despite ploughing a lone furrow up front on his own for an hour, Rooney trudged unhappily off the field and then threw his boots down in disgust as he made way for the joint arrival of Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov.
"It was always part of our thoughts to bring Wayne off,'' confirmed Ferguson. "He had been playing as the lone striker for an hour, which is why he was always going to come off. He is never pleased to come off. He has so much energy he wants to play all the time."
Having predicted his team would provide United with a stern test, Besiktas coach Mustafa Denizli was disappointed to miss out after coming so close to snatching a point. "I am sad about the result," he said. "To concede so late after putting in so much effort is quite demoralizing."

Five reasons why Manchester United's season is clicking into place
Manchester United have proved their defeat to Burnley was merely a blip with victories over Arsenal and Tottenham. How has their season moved into top gear?
WAYNE ROONEY:
Despite the predictions that Rooney would have to fill the Cristiano Ronaldo role at United this season, the England forward has always been much more than merely the next best thing to Ronaldo. The 23-year-old is his own man and his early season performances have underlined his determination to make that point emphatically.
Rooney has been peerless so far this campaign and his goal at Spurs on Sunday took his league tally to five in five games.
DARREN FLETCHER:
When Fletcher was singled out as one of the main victims of Roy Keane's alleged rant about his under-performing team-mates on MUTV four years ago, the Scot's Old Trafford future appeared bleak.
The United supporters had already started to give him stick from the terraces and his captain had seemingly joined in.
But Fletcher has emerged as United's number one midfielder in recent months. Missing out on the Champions League final last season highlighted his value to the team.
Against Arsenal recently, Fletcher was immense and he is almost now doing what Keane used to in the engine room.
PAUL SCHOLES:
Scholes is 35 in November and he has already suggested that this will be his last season as a player.
But the form he has displayed so far this season has been his best for years. Anderson's arrival two years ago was supposed to signal the end for Scholes, but he continues to retain his place in the team.
His experience, wonderful passing ability and winning mentality have been key factors in United's resurgence following the defeat at Turf Moor.
BURNLEY DEFEAT:
United have a habit of steeling themselves in adversity following an unexpected defeat.
If nothing else, it gives Sir Alex Ferguson the opportunity to wield the big stick and dust off the hairdryer.
But losing at Turf Moor was a real low-point. Nothing went right on the night for United as Owen Coyle's promoted team out-fought, out-ran and ultimately defeated the champions.
Ferguson has admitted to questioning the commitment of his players after that defeat, but results since suggest that there are no problems in that department.
MAN CITY THREAT:
United always keep an eye on the results of Chelsea and Liverpool, but the emergence of Manchester City on their doorstep is providing added motivation.
In Ferguson's 23 years at Old Trafford, City have never held the whip-hand on United and the Scot has no intention of that changing.
Key figures such as Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney have spoken of the extra motivation brought about by City's attempt to crack the Big Four and, ironically, City's big ambitions are helping fuel United's own desire. |
