Sunday 31st October, 05:58 AM JST

TOKYO —

Model and actress Nozomi Sasaki, 22, appeared at a launch event for underwear brand Amo’s Style recently. Promoting their “Christmas camisole,” Sasaki appeared onstage wearing a red “Christmas-colored” camisole and a black fur vest. “It’s got a grown up, slightly sophisticated feel,” she told the audience.

When asked about her ideal Christmas date, she answered, “I’d like to walk down the street enjoying the illuminations. A nice guy to walk with would be good too.”

Monday 01st November, 05:54 AM JST

TOKYO —

Nir Bergman’s film on the adolescence of an Israeli boy in the 1960s won the top prize of the Tokyo International Film Festival on Sunday, his second grand prix in the event following that in 2002.

The film ‘‘Intimate Grammar’’ won the $50,000 Tokyo Sakura Grand Prix, while the Special Jury Prize went to the 98-year-old Japanese filmmaker Kaneto Shindo, who described people’s sufferings during a war in the movie ‘‘Post Card.’‘

Shindo, in a wheelchair, took part in an awarding ceremony at the upscale Roppongi Hills complex, saying, ‘‘I’ve done films for a long time but this is my last piece. I heartily hope all of you will be doing fine and create good movies.’‘

Meanwhile, the French film ‘‘Sarah’s Key’’ directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner snatched the Award for Best Director, based on the smash hit novel about an American journalist on the brink of making big life decisions.

Ryoko Yonekura to wear outfits worth Y100 mil in 'Gone With the Wind'

Monday 01st November, 06:11 AM JST

TOKYO —

Ryoko Yonekura, 35, will be wearing outfits worth 100 million yen when she steps onto the stage as Scarlett O’Hara, the main character of “Gone with the Wind,” in a Japanese stage version of the famous story scheduled to open in June next year at the Imperial Theater in Tokyo.

Producer Toho said the play will commemorate its 100th anniversary. As part of promotions for the stage drama, the theater is hosting a public exhibition of the outfits to be worn by Yonekura.

According to Yonekura, the iconic red dress, a visible manifestation of the fiery passion that burns within the heart of the movie’s heroine, is fitted with a tough, corset-like waist that stiffens and straightens the posture. “It really helps you get into character,” she explained. “I can’t wait to put it on and show it to everyone.”

There are another 6 or 7 outfits to be added to the collection, for a combined value of around 100 million yen.

The play opens on June 18 next year.

Leah Dizon to split from husband of two years

Monday 01st November, 01:00 PM JST

American model and singer Leah Dizon, 24, has announced that she is to divorce her husband of two years. Although her agency initially denied rumors of a split, it was confirmed over the weekend that Dizon is filing for divorce from her stylist husband BUN, 31, and she is looking for consultation on retaining full custody of their child.

The rift is said to have been caused by the couple’s busy schedules and inability to meet regularly. It was then deepened by the couple’s differing opinions toward raising children, according to tabloid reports.

It is believed the couple met in 2008 on the set of a promo video shoot for Dizon’s single “Love Paradox.” The pair were married in October of the same year in what Dizon later confirmed had been a shotgun wedding.

In February of this year, in an apparent attempt to paper over the cracks that had been appearing since the birth of their daughter Mila, Dizon publicly discussed making cookies for her husband on Valentine’s Day but a few months later, the couple’s differences proved to be irreconcilable.

Mizushima Hiro Gets Award for Debut Novel
November 01, 2010

Actor Mizushima Hiro (26) has certainly hit the ground running as a novelist. Publishing company Poplar today named his very first book, "Kagerou," as the 'taisho' (top prize) winner in their 5th annual awards, pretty much guaranteeing that it will be a bestseller. Mizushima, who wrote the novel using the real name Saito Tomohiro, declined the ¥20 million prize money that came with the award. In announcing the winner, Poplar said, "The book has its rough edges but they were more than compensated for by its power," adding that 8 of the 13 editors on the judging panel had voted for the book. In accepting the award in Tokyo this morning, Mizushima also addressed his recent decision - announced just in September - to quit the agency that had managed him as an actor in order to focus on his writing.

The Poplar awards were established in 2005 and, apart from the first year, there had been no winner of the taisho award until this year. Kagerou was one of 1285 novels submitted this year, by authors ranging in age from 11 to 85. That number was whittled down to seven finalists. Two other novels, "Giniro no Maameido" (The Silver Mermaid) and "Agein" (Again) , received special prizes.

Mizushima was scouted as a fashion model while in university, and in 2006 he landed the starring role as TV and movie action hero "Kamen Rider Kabuto." Over the following years he had roles in several hit TV drama series. In 2009 he married popular singer Ayaka, and they announced that she was taking an extended break from her music career to battle Graves Disease.

Tsuyoshi Takashiro says magazine interview is fake
Sat, October 30, 2010 (3:12am EDT)

Tsuyoshi Takashiro (46), the husband of actress Erika Sawajiri (24), updated his blog on Saturday to comment on yesterday's article in Shukan Shincho. The magazine published a purported interview with Takashiro, but he says that the interview never took place.

In a blog entry titled "Beware of Fakes!", Takashiro raised the subject using pictures of a "Hike" (Nike) sandal and an "Azi-desu" (Adidas) T-shirt. He went on to say that he never had an interview with Shukan Shincho. However, he did not comment on whether any of the claims in the article are true.

According to the disputed article, Takashiro said that he met with Sawajiri and a local lawyer in Madrid, Spain, to talk about the private management office that Sawajiri established there, and they decided that they will keep it running. The article also said that Sawajiri would soon make an announcement regarding the rumors of the couple's possible divorce.

It remains to be seen whether Sawajiri will in fact make such an announcement in the near future, but her whereabouts have recently been the subject of much speculation. Since last month, she has not returned to her Tokyo apartment.

Oriental Radio's Shingo Fujimori dating Natsuki Kato?
Sun, October 31, 2010 (1:09am EDT)

Daily Sports is reporting a rumor that comedian Shingo Fujimori (27) of Oriental Radio is dating actress and model Natsuki Kato (25). The two met when they both appeared on the same variety show, and they started seriously going out during this summer, multiple sources say.

Back in 2006, Fujimori was said to be in a relationship with actress Juri Ueno (24), but since then there have been no other romance rumors involving him.

Kato, who recently appeared in the "Moyashimon" drama series and has a part in the upcoming "Paradise Kiss" movie, ended a messy relationship with her former manager last year after taking the case to civil court.

Erika Toda, Go Ayano dating?
Sun, October 31, 2010 (1:44am EDT)

It was reported yesterday that actress Erika Toda (22) was recently seen on a date with actor Go Ayano (28), reinforcing rumors of their relationship that first surfaced in July. The latest issue of the magazine Josei Seven published photos of the two together that were taken a few days ago.

According to the magazine, Toda and Ayano attended a show for a fashion brand at an event hall in Tokyo during late October. The pair were seen occasionally holding hands, and one witness stated that when Ayano met with the fashion brand's president (whom he has known for a long time), he introduced Toda as his girlfriend. After the show, they both returned to Toda's apartment.

Toda was previously said to be dating Kanjani8 member Shingo Murakami (28), until this past July when Josei Seven reported that they had broken up. The magazine said that around that time, Toda was at a high-class sushi restaurant with Perfume's Ayaka Nishiwaki (21) and another friend when she was overheard talking about her love life. She apparently told them that she had a new boyfriend, and it was widely speculated that the man was Ayano.

Ayano made his acting debut in 2003 in "Kamen Rider 555" and has since then appeared in several television dramas, but the majority of his acting work is in movies. Two of his most recent roles are in "SP THE MOTION PICTURE" and "GANTZ."

"Keibetsu"
Sun, October 31, 2010 (9:11pm EDT)

"Keibetsu," a novel by Akutagawa Prize-winning author Kenji Nakagami (1946-1992), is being turned into a movie, co-starring Kengo Kora (22) and Anne Suzuki (23). It is being directed by Ryuichi Hiroki ("Raiou," "Kimi no Tomodachi").

Considered one of the most important postwar writers of Japan, Nakagami's works often dealt with racial and social discrimination in Japan, due to his ancestry as a burakumin (one of Japan's main minority groups). "Keibetsu" (meaning "scorn") was the last novel published by Nakagami before dying from kidney cancer at the age of 46.

Kora plays the part of Kazu, who is the only son of a distinguished family but spends all his time gambling and racking up debt. He meets Machiko (played by Suzuki), the number-one pole dancer at a Kabukicho bar, and their attraction to each other leads them to begin living together in Kazu's hometown, though Kazu's father disapproves of the couple. When the loan shark shows up to collect on Kazu's debt, he has no way to repay it, so the man demands Machiko as payment instead.

Kora previously worked with the director in his 2007 film "M." Suzuki has not worked with either of them before, and playing the part of a pole dancer is also be a new experience for her.

The supporting cast includes Kaoru Kobayashi as Kazu's father and Nao Omori as the loan shark. Filming started on October 24. Kadokawa Pictures will distribute the film in 2011.

Mamoru Hosoda's "Summer Wars" being submitted for Academy Award consideration
Mon, November 1, 2010 (11:41am EDT)

Anime News Network has confirmed reports that anime distributor Funimation is in the process of submitting Mamoru Hosoda's "Summer Wars" for the Best Animated Feature category in the next Academy Awards. If the film meets the Academy's eligibility requirements and is accepted for consideration, it will be the category's 14th submission. If the category reaches 16 submissions, there will be five nominated films for the award instead of only three.

One of the Academy's requirements is that the film has to have a theatrical run in Los Angeles County meeting certain criteria. Funimation has said that it plans to give the movie such a run this December, though dates and theaters have not yet been announced.

"Summer Wars" has already won several awards at various film festivals around the world. If it gets accepted and then makes the shortlist for Best Animated Feature, it would become only the third Japanese film to receive a nomination in that category. The other two were Hayao Miyazaki's "Howl's Moving Castle" in 2005 and "Spirited Away" in 2002, with the latter being the only one to win in the category.
