AirAsia boss praises Malaysia's acting transport minister

PETALING JAYA (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) -
AirAsia chief executive officer Tony Fernandes took to Twitter to compliment acting transport minister Hishammuddin Hussein's handling of the search for the missing MH370 flight.

"After some unclear statements @HishammuddinH2O has taken control been transparent and ever present. One voice. Transparent. Clear. Honest.

"Seen lots in the aviation industry in my 12 years. This is unprecedented. @HishammuddinH2O must be given praise for his untiring efforts," the AirAsia boss tweeted on Sunday.

As acting transport minister, Mr Hishammuddin has been pushed to the forefront as the face of the Malaysian search and rescue operation.

Many believe that he has handled the role well, especially when facing grilling from the media at the daily press conference.

Meanwhile, Mr Hishammuddin also actively tweets about the incident.

On Sunday morning, he urged Christians to pray for the safe return of all passenger on board MH370 during their masses.

"Good Sunday Morning 2 all - those praying in Churches around the country a prayer please 4 d passengers, crew n their family #MH370."

Mr Hishammuddin also said he was touched by a China Central Television (CCTV) interview with Madam Liu Guiqui, the mother of a Chinese passenger who stormed into the press conference venue in Sepang's Sama-Sama Hotel and was later carried away by security personnel.

She told CCTV that she was not mistreated by Malaysian police, adding that they were trying to protect her from aggressive media.

"Touched me 2 d core. We will continue TQ," Mr Hishammuddin wrote in a tweet.

aku pernah utarakan teori dua kapal masa dulu2..tp ditolak mesra oleh semua...

Capt Huzlan kata klau commercial plane is impossible sebab plaen B777 besar dan engine berat
Tapi klau fighter plane boleh sebab kecit
Itu pun sesama pilots kena communicate sesama sendiri dlm plane supaya alignment of flight sama dan tak eksiden

MH370 pilot Zaharie's family seeks 'refuge'

PETALING JAYA (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - The family of MH370 pilot Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah has sought refuge away from their own home in a bid to ride out the "storm of speculation" against him.

"Zaharie's family prefers to ride out the storm than talk. For now, they know who their real friends are," said a close family friend who requested anonymity.

According to the friend, the decision of Mr Zaharie's wife and children to go into "hiding" was to avoid being hounded by the media, like what happened to the family of co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid where a local TV station stationed themselves in front of the house.

"At a time of anxiety like this, the family members want to rally together for emotional support, not fend off questions from the media," she said.

Except for an initial interview with his grandnephew, a YouTube tribute for the pilot and an outpouring online support for his daughter Aisyah, nothing else has been said.

The friend said the family had been very co-operative with the requests made by the authorities, as they had nothing to hide.

Although some relatives felt Mr Zaharie's family should come out publicly to clear speculations that portrayed him as a political activist, they knew they should respect their desire for privacy, she said.

His relatives also stressed that Mr Zaharie was no extremist, unlike what was alleged about him in the media.

No amount of speculations could convince them that he might have done something to cause MH370 to go missing, they said.

He had also been in touch regularly with Ms Aisyah who has completed postgraduate studies in architecture in Melbourne, Australia.

Ms Aisyah had told a friend in Australia before returning to Kuala Lumpur that "all the speculation is killing the family".

Ms Aisyah has taken time off from her work to be with the family who are staying in a different location from their home in Shah Alam.

As for family members of Mr Fariq, the 27-year-old first officer, they said they would not grant press interviews until the aircraft was found.

Mr Fariq's brother, Afiq Abdul Hamid has been counting the hours and days since the plane vanished on March 8.

"It's been a week. Still waiting," he posted on Twitter last week about the agonising wait.

Some relatives of the plane passengers have left for home, but others are still waiting

Mr Selamat Umar has been awaiting news of his missing son at The Everly Hotel in Putrajaya for the past two weeks. He says the vigil will continue until his son is found.

The 60-year-old is among nine relatives of Malaysian passengers of Flight MH370 who are still staying put. Others have gone home.

Over at the Hotel Equatorial Bangi Putrajaya, 26 Chinese nationals are still waiting for any information about their missing family members.

"No one knows where the plane is. Has it been hijacked or has it crashed?" asks Mr Selamat, who runs a small oil palm plantation in Pahang. His son, Mr Mohd Khairul Amri Selamat, 29, an aviation engineer, was heading to Beijing to repair a plane.

"One by one, I watched the others leave the hotel, with their bags in tow. I don't think they will return until the plane is found. If I go home, I will not be able to get the latest news."

With the missing plane gaining global attention, the relatives of the passengers have been besieged by the dozens of journalists covering the news. Some have chosen to stay mostly in their rooms to avoid the reporters and photographers.

"It's like being in jail," says one relative who wants to be known only as Mr Chng. "There's nothing I can do but wait. There is a huge shopping mall next to the hotel, but do you think I have the mood to go shopping? Or use the hotel's facilities?"

Mr Chng, who keeps mostly to himself, is one of the loneliest people in the hotel. He is often seen sitting alone in a quiet corner in the lobby in the early hours of the morning when the place is quiet.

He says he has not slept much since his sister Chng Meiling went missing. Ms Chng, 33, works as a senior process engineer in the United States and was heading there via Beijing.

As the eldest of five children, Mr Chng feels responsible for his sister. "She is my sister, I need to wait for her and take her home. No matter how long I have to wait, I will not leave the hotel, even if I have to pay for the stay myself."

With each passing day, hope fades a little. But with no trace of the aircraft or its passengers, there is a tiny straw to cling to, that some, or most, may still be alive.

Mr Selamat tells The Sunday Times he keeps his sanity by maintaining a set routine. Every day, he wakes up at 7am to watch the news on TV, before ploughing through the newspapers for more news. Then he takes a walk around the hotel.

Unlike Mr Chng, he speaks freely to the media, sometimes even holding his own mini press conference to voice his frustrations. He is always around when politicians or other VIPs drop in on the relatives at The Everly Hotel.

Among the 150 trained counsellors who have been there to support the family members is Mr Abdul Jalil Hassan, 43, who says: "The first 72 hours of a newsbreak are the most critical as this is when the relatives need plenty of support to absorb the news. They would experience all kinds of emotions, from shock to feeling depressed, stressed and sad.

"Once they calm down, even though there's plenty of uncertainty, they would realise that there are only two possible scenarios - Flight MH370 will return or they will lose their loved ones.

"Of course, many are hoping against hope for a miracle."

MH370: Pet fish pines for missing owner's return

BANTING (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) -
The saying a dog is a man's best friend, may now be even applicable to a pet fish - at least in the case of Petronas marketing manager Puspanathan Subramaniam, who boarded the ill-fated Malaysia Airlines MH370.

His father Subramaniam Gurusamy said the pet arowana fish was sluggish and had refused to eat for over five days.

"The fish now only eats if I prop my son's photo next to the aquarium," said Mr Subramaniam, 60, who became a security guard after retiring as a construction worker five years ago.

The fish, however, is not the only one showing signs of misery.

When Mr Puspanathan was leaving for the airport on March 8, his three-year-old son Harish Varman had clung to his legs and begged him not to go.

"My son travels regularly for work and my grandson had never cried and pleaded with his father this way before," a distraught Mr Subramaniam said.

He said his son had also not been too keen to go on the business trip and requested his office to shorten the duration of his stay in China.

"The business trip was supposed to be for two weeks but my son got it shortened to a week as he did not want to be away from his family that long," he said at his house in Telok Panglima Garang near Banting.

According to Mr Subramaniam, his home was now a listless dungeon, with family members fearing every waking moment and praying there would be no tragic news.

"My wife and I are starting to feel numb inside not knowing what's happened to our son," he said.

Mr Subramaniam and his wife A. Amirtham, 60, also have a 26-year-old daughter named Theanmoli.

Mr Subramaniam said he never imagined he and his wife would have to go through such "emotional torture" in their twilight years.

"We were happy that both our children had done well in their studies as our efforts to prevent them from leading the lives our grandparents had led confined in the estate had paid off," he said.

He recounted how both he and his wife, who were classmates in primary school, had meticulously planned to get their children out of the Carey Island estate where they were brought up.

Mr Subramaniam said they decided he had to be the one to get the ball rolling, so he resigned from his estate job and 'came out' to work as a construction worker.

His wife worked in the estate clinic as an attendant and the family continued living in Carey Island.

"My wife and I bought our house five years ago and our son is the one who makes the monthly housing loan instalment.

"He also pays our utility bills and buys the monthly groceries," he said.

Aviation experts still think MH370 was hijacked, says report

MARCH 23, 2014

Sixteen days into the search for MH370, some veteran pilots and aviation experts believe that the Boeing 777-200ER (9M-MRO) might have been a victim of hijacking. – The Malaysian Insider pic, March 23, 2014.Many theories had been forwarded in the past two weeks regarding the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, but aviation experts and seasoned pilots told Singapore's the Sunday Times they still believe the aircraft may have been hijacked although not necessarily for ransom or other demands.

"It's possible there was something or someone on the plane that was important enough for an organisation or group to stage this," a pilot with more than 25 years' experience, who asked not to be named, told the Sunday edition of the Straits Times.

Although the media had been asking for the cargo manifest, Malaysia Airlines had not made it public.

Instead, the airline had merely said that there were several tonnes of mangosteens and lithium-ion batteries on board.

"" style="border: 0px; vertical-align: bottom;">

Paul Yap, who heads Temasek Polytechnic's aviation school, told ST that two weeks after the plane vanished en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur, the signs still pointed to a deliberate takeover of the plane.

Authorities have said that they believed the plane's communication and tracking systems – the transponder, and the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) – were deliberately turned off.

The fact that this happened just as the flight was leaving Malaysian airspace and entering Vietnamese airspace raised a red flag, the ST report said.

"When a handover happens, there is some sort of a radar 'black hole'. Nobody is really watching. In this particular area, the communications are also a little patchy and sometimes we have to call a few times to make contact," another pilot who has been flying for 30 years told ST.

He said someone with this knowledge would be aware that that would have been the best time to take over the aircraft and chart a new course.

Yap told ST that the plane’s erratic movements after air traffic controllers lost contact with it did not seem consistent with a mechanical fault or some other in-flight catastrophe.

The person or people responsible were probably trying to escape radar detection, he said.

Many pilots do not believe there was a fire or that the plane was trying to land in Langkawi as there was no distress call from the cockpit, said the ST report.

Even if there is total engine failure at 10,700m, a plane can continue to glide and pilots have about 15 to 20 minutes to do what they need to and send alerts, the report said.

In 1998, Swissair flight 111 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean after smoke filled the cockpit and cabin. But not before the pilots reported the emergency.

Seven years later, Greek carrier Helios Airways crashed into a mountain when a lack of oxygen incapacitated the crew. Again, the pilots had time to send out a distress signal.

"Unless the plane broke up mid-air or there was an explosion, and both theories seem to have been ruled out, there is really no reason why the pilots could not call in an emergency unless they did not want to or were prevented from doing so," a 30-year veteran pilot told ST.

A retired United States Federal Aviation Administration official, Michael Daniel, said even if the debris located in the southern Indian Ocean belongs to MH370, that was not enough evidence to rule out hijack or any of the possibilities that have surfaced so far. – March 23, 20
