Italy抯 World Cup bonus

Italy抯 World Cup squad have been promised a win bonus of almost £200,000 each if they triumph in Germany this summer.
The Italian Football Federation are understood to have made just over £4m available as prize money for the 23-man Azzurri party if they are crowned champions.
Having not lifted the trophy since 1982, the FIGC are keen to do all they can to motivate the players and are ready to hand out £178,000 each if necessary.
This summer抯 figure is considerably larger than what was on offer four years ago when the individuals involved in the 2002 campaign were promised £120,000.
The Azzurri will net a bonus for finishing as runners-up too, but |

Toni sets historic landmark

Luca Toni became the first player for 47 years to score 30 goals in a Serie A season when he scored twice in ACF Fiorentina's 5-2 win against Reggina Calcio. The last man to reach the landmark was FC Internazionale Milano's Argentinian striker Anton Valentin Angelillo, who scored 33 times in 1958/59, and no Italian-born player has done so since Felice Placido Borel of Juventus in 1934.

The goals leave Toni a near-certainty to sccop the ESM Golden Shoe for 2005/06, as he holds a six-point lead with the season winding down. His only realsitic competitor is Samuel Eto'o of FC Barcelona, but the Cameroonian would have to score five times in two matches to have a chance of winning. Arsenal FC's Thierry Henry ended the season with a bang, scoring a hat-trick to bring his total to 27 goals from only 30 starts.

Only the leading five countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England) in the UEFA coefficient rankings have two as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in international performance level between clubs from those countries and those from the other countries.
A player cannot first play in a summer league (eg. Norway) and then in a winter league (eg. Spain) and combine the points total for each season.

Double-strike sees Toni reach 30-goal landmark
MILAN, May 7 (Reuters) - Fiorentina's Italy international striker Luca Toni struck twice in his team's 5-2 win over Reggina on Sunday to become the first player in 47 years to score 30 goals in Serie A.
The last man to reach 30 goals in a season was Argentine Anton Valentin Angelillo who scored 33 goals in the 1958/1959 season for Inter Milan.
Toni is only the third Italian born player to have achieved the feat in Serie A following Felice Placido Borel of Juventus in 1934 and Giuseppe Meazza for Inter Milan in 1930. Both scored 31 goals.
Fiorentina's win maintained their two point lead over AS Roma in the battle for fourth place in Serie A which brings a place in the qualifying round for next season's Champions League.
Toni is expected to lead the line for Marcello Lippi's Italy in the World Cup finals in Germany.

Vieri out of World Cup

Christian Vieri will miss the World Cup Finals as a result of an impending knee operation, according to reports.
The Italian striker has been suffering with a meniscus problem for the last month and will be forced to have surgery to resolve the issue.
Vieri, who was an almost certainty to be included in Marcello Lippi抯 Germany 2006 plans, will go under the knife at some stage this week.
Operations of such nature usually require the player to be sidelined for at least a month which means Vieri will not be included in the 23-man squad.
The Monaco man, who joined the Principality outfit in January with the specific intention of making the party, was hoping to add to his nine goals in two World Cups to date.
Vieri抯 absence will now open the door for an outsider to make the squad with Pippo Inzaghi and Cristiano Lucarelli now hoping to break into the Giro Azzurro.
Whispers in France suggest that Vieri will be fit for the start of pre-season even if Francesco Guidolin is unlikely to be his Coach.
The Italian tactician, who replaced Didier Deschamps midway through this campaign, is understood to be set for a return to peninsula football. |
