Primera Liga Preview: Deportivo ? Barcelona

Deportivo (7th, 14 points) v Barcelona (1st, 19 points)
When: 2200 CET, Saturday, November 4, 2006
Where: The Riazor, Coru?

Barca travel to the Riazor looking to put their Champions League woes behind them. While they still control their own destiny and could qualify with two wins, few would have expected the defending European champions to have to fight tooth and nail so early in the competition.

In what might be a first, the El Clasico defeat has paled into insignificance and it is Chelsea who have them rattled, so much so that the cool-as-a-cucumber Rijkard was also left complaining, something you don't see coming from him no matter how harsh the ciscumstances.

Still Ruling Spain

They look a lot more comfortable in La Liga, where defenders don't get as physical, and balls don't sail over their heads too often. No surprises then, that they are still on top.

However, with Sevilla just a point behind, and Real, two, one loss could change it all for them. Besides, another loss at this juncture, and there is no telling which way their season will go.

Deportivo Upwardly Mobile

The Galicians seem to be recovering after an atrocious last season, and have won all their home games so far this season.

Joaquin Caparros has pulled his side through some major setbacks ? long term injuries to Valeron, Bopido and Andrade (who is close to a full return) ? and has targeted a season-ending European berth.

Riki, Arizmendi, Capdevila and Sergio have been their in form players. While they might not have faced the really big opponents yet, the likes of Atletico Madrid, Villarreal and Zaragoza have been sent home with nothing.

Battle Of Attrition

As ever, Deportivo like to wear down their opponents, and will try to do the same against a Barcelona side that can be found wanting on that front. With Riki and Arizmendi finishing with precision this season, the Catalans can ill afford to get rattled again.

Barca will try to counter that by moving the ball around well, and must guard against turning possession over while trying outrageous moves. All in all, a gripping encounter in the making!

TEAM NEWS

Deportivo

Joaquin Caparros has refused to adapt his team's style to be able to prevent Barcelona from playing their game. Adapt he will have to, as he is likely to be without left-back Joan Capdevila and midfielder Duscher, as both are carrying niggles.

Bopido is out until March with a knee ligament injury, while Juan Carlos Valeron and Pablo Alvarez are also out until Christmas. However, there is also good news, as Juanma returns to full fitness.

Barcelona import Rodri is set to deputize at left back, with Coloccini anchoring the midfield. Up front, Riki and Arizmendi will be supported by another Barcelona import, Verdu, with Sergio and Felipe for support.

Barcelona

The Catalans have been rather serious since that ill-tempered draw with Chelsea. Rijkaard in particular, was uncharacteristically loud in training on Thursday. However, the players have closed ranks around him, with Edmilson suggesting that he was doing nothing a father wouldn't in a family.

Xavi and Gudjohnsen are out for around ten days, with injuries picked up during the Chelsea game. With Eto'o also on the sidelines, a start for Javier Saviola is on the cards. Iniesta will partner Deco in midfield, with Giuly likely to replace Messi on the right.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Sergio: The midfielder has been handed a lot of responsibility in midfield since Valeron's injury, and his understanding with Felipe is beginning to produce results for Deportivo.

Riki: The former Getafe winger-forward will need to produce something special if the Galicians are going to breach the Catalans' defense.

Edmilson: His role in an away game often gets sold short, and the difference was there to be seen once he replaced the ragged Motta against Chelsea. The way he brings Ronaldinho into the game with his precise passes from deep in midfield, will also be a huge threat for Depor.

Iniesta: With Xavi injured, the flambuoyant, energetic youngster will partner Deco in the middle, and his imagination could be the key against an organized Deportivo defense.

PREDICTION

There might be talks of a crisis doing the rounds, but Barcelona are still leading La Liga, and have to be favourites. That said, the game comes at the best possible time for Deportivo, with Barca sure to have a few doubts about themselves. If the Riazor can get behind their team, anything is possible.

Deportivo 1-2 Barcelona

Puyol's Father Dies In Car Accident

Barcelona skipper Carles Puyol's father passed away in a car accident today. The defender has been released from the squad that will take on Deportivo on Saturday evening.

Josep Puyol, 56, met with a car accident on Friday afternoon, and passed away at 1657 CET, the club announced on their website.

Puyol was ready to travel with the squad to Coruna when he revcieved the news, and was immediately given the permission to stay back.

The mood in the team was understandably glum upon arrival in Coruna, with players refusing to speak to the media.

Lilian Thuram should now deputize for Puyol at the Riazor. However, yet another absence leaves Rijkaard faced with lots of changes.

Xavi and Gudjohnsen are also missing from the squad due to minor injuries, with Samuel Eto'o out until march.

Barcelona lead La Liga with 19 points from eight games, with Sevilla in second place one point behind, and Real Madrid chasing in third, on 17 points. Deportivo are currently seventh, with 14 points.

takziah buat puyol.....
