HSBC Asian 5 Nations Division 1 Tournament

Thursday, 26 May 2011 11:56

26 MAY 2011 - MALAYSIA Rugby Union has named nine new caps in a 24-strong team to represent the country in the HSBC Asian 5 Nations Division 1 Tournament to be held in South Korea from June 1-4 2011.

The team will be out to redeem the country’s 3rd place standing in Division I of the Asia Rugby Football Union (ARFU). This follows the team’s performance in last year’s tournament hosted in Singapore where Sri Lanka took home the silverware, and the hosts were runners-up.

National team manager DSP Ridzuan Abdul Aziz said the selection of the new caps underscores the MRU’s seriousness in blooding new faces in the national team line-up for the future.

DSP Ridzuan and the MRU selectors last month initially marched in a squad of 46 in a centralised camp based at UiTM, Shah Alam, which was later cut down to 30.

Following the completion of the MRU-sponsored Super League on May 08, the selectors drafted 15 more players from the finalists’ line-up – 10 from Cobra, the newly crowned Super League winners, and five from Keris Conlay, the runners-up.

However, after the final selection last week, the manager and selectors named what is considered a very balanced team comprising mature and youthful players.

Leading clubs Cobra and Negeri Sembilan Wanderers have contributed seven and five players respectively, while the balance have been drawn from the Armed Forces, Bandar Penawar Rugby Academy , Kris Conlay Rugby Club and Bandaraya Dragons.

The only import player named in the side is Fijian and Cobra veteran Isoa Vuluma Turuva, who is expected to lead the charge from his stand-off position.

Once more the side will be captained by DBKL’s lone representative and national sevens skipper, Nik Safuan Ismade.

The side departs Kuala Lumpur on Sunday May 29, accompanied by the manager; head coach Ishak Abidin, three assistant coaches, a doctor and physiotherapist.

Overall, DSP Ridzuan is happy with the quality of the players he has in the team.

“It could have been better it we were given enough time and resources to prepare a team for such an important undertaking,” DSP Ridzuan said.

“Compared to last year, the consolation is that I had two extra weeks to look closely at players’ performances and capability. The skills and work-rate issues are about the same, so I’m hoping that in Korea, the boys will lift their game and get good results, individually and as a team.”

He added that given the caliber of players he has to work with, he is satisfied that this outing will be a fruitful one as the tournament  is sort of a climax of  rugby VXs activities after the completion of the MRU Super League.

DSP Ridzuan hinted that the high quality of play and discipline by the players in the Super League series will help tremendously in their performance in South Korea.

Malaysia will take on Singapore in their first match on Wednesday June 1, while the hosts South Korea take on newly promoted Philippines in the second match.

The teams take a break until Saturday June 4 when winners and losers will play each other to determine the divisional standings.

All matches are being played at the Ansa-Wa Stadium, in Ansan City, an hour’s drive from Incheon Airport.

Time to get even with Singapore

Monday, 30 May 2011 13:14

MALAYSIA’S national XVs rugby team headed for South Korea on Sunday with one clear message from the top – the country’s Ministry of Youth & Sports.

The message was delivered to the team last Thursday by Deputy Sports Minister Dato’ Razali Ibrahim during a ceremony in which the Malaysian flag was handed to team manager DSP Ridzuan Abdul Aziz.

And the message was: Beat Singapore in the first semi-final first and then take care of the rest of the tournament as the 2011 HSBC Asia 5 Nation Division 1 championship kicks off on Wednesday June 1 in South Korea.

The 24-man team and four management officials were being hosted at the Deputy Minister’s office at Menara KBS in Putrajaya for a final briefing followed by lunch.

Dato` Razali was referring to the disappointing 20-22 loss to Singapore in last year’s qualifier hosted at the Yio Chu Kang Stadium in Singapore in April last year.

“Flashback story”
Singapore extended its mastery over regional rivals Malaysia with a nail-biting 22 – 20 victory after playing nearly the entire match with just 14 men after winger Muhammad Zaki was red carded for tripping in the 33rd minute. Up to that point, it seemed as if the Singapore Rugby Lions, who last year enjoyed their first taste of the elite A5N Top 5 competition, were on track for an easy win.

Singapore opened the scoring in just the second minute with a penalty from stand-off Tom Burns who put in a man of the match display with his boot knocking over 12 points from four penalty attempts. Burns would add his second penalty in the 17th minute to put Singapore ahead 6 -0. Full credit also goes to the Singapore forwards, who exploited their advantage in bulk over Malaysia and played to the team’s strengths throughout the match. The first half saw tries from lock Andrew Bennett and captain and flanker Matt Roberts within the space of ten minutes to nudge Singapore out to a 16-nil lead.

The game was almost slipping away from the Malaysians when some inspirational play from their captain Nik Safuan Ismade and a crucial error from Singaporean winger Zaki conspired to keep the visitors in with a chance. First up for the Malaysian captain was a vital try on the 33-minute marker followed by a successful penalty attempt five minutes later which made the score line a bit more comfortable for the Malaysians at 16-8 at the interval.

In the second half, a revitalized Malaysia started to exploit the space against the 14-man defence and were finally able to maintain the possession necessary to feed the ball out wide where they have tremendous pace. As they stretched the field against the Singapore defence and started to tire the opposition forwards the gaps were created for No 8 Kini Rasolosolo who crossed over for Malaysia’s second try of the match to tighten the score at 16-13.

Five minutes later, Burns again made the Malaysians pay for conceding kickable penalties as he slotted through his third to edge Singapore further ahead 19-13. The match remained at 19-13 until Burns stepped up again with his fourth penalty at the 63rd minute to bring it to 22-13.

But the never say die Malaysians continued to threaten and finally burst through thanks to some strong open field running from lock Dineswaran Krishnan who ploughed through Singapore’s midfield defence before offloading nicely to reserve winger Viliame Tuinivanua who scampered across the line untouched. The successful conversion brought the score to 22-20 with the game teetering on a knife’s edge for the last 13 minutes as both teams threatened to break through.

Malaysian mistakes saw the visitors concede their man advantage with two sin-bins in the second half that helped ease the pressure on the hosts. In the end, Singapore’s sturdy forwards had enough gas left in the tank to retain possession and see out the clock for a well-deserved 22-20 win that delighted the 1,000 plus spectators at Yio Chu Kang.

Malaysia take on Singapore is what is billed as the “payback” match on Wednesday June 1 at the Ansan-Wa Auxiliary Stadium, Ansan City, at 1pm; while the hosts, Korea, challenge newly-promoted Philippines at 3pm.

.......from part 1

Losers and winners of Wednesday’s matches play each other on Saturday June 4 at the same venue to decide and outright champion.

In his pep talk to the players, Dato` Razali said rugby in Malaysia was still very much in the social mode.

“It’s not fun to play rugby if you’re not fit,” he said while recalling the days he played rugby in the search of making new friends.

He said it goes without saying that rugby in Malaysia was evolving at a rate and to the extent that much seriousness was called for in order for the country to be at par with other top Asian rugby-playing nations.

“First we must beat Singapore, take one match at a time,” he urged.

Dato’ Razali said his Ministry was mindful that this year marked another important milestone in the sport – the hosting of the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand from Sep 9 to October 23.

Sentiments expressed by the Deputy Minister were echoed by MRU President Dato’ Wira Amiruddin Embi and DSP Ridzuan.

Dato’  Wira cautioned the team to be extra vigilant because of a move to be less dependent on imported players mainly from Fiji.

The only import player on this outing is Cobra’s flyhalf Isoa Vuluma Turuva. For last year’s outing, Malaysia’s onslaught was powered by one Fijian in the forward and six in the backline.

DSP Ridzuan only wished he had more time on his hands to mould the strongest team Malaysia has ever assembled in recent history. There are eight new caps in this national side.

“With a young team whose average age is below 25, we need more time and resources. But this is the best we can manage so far …. So we see how! Overall I am pleased,” DSP Ridzuan said.

Coach Ishak Abidin said in his many years of coaching rugby in Malaysia, he at last has some decent players to work with.

“Everything a coach can possibly look for is in this team … size, skills, attitude, knowledge and rules of the game …. you name it … these boys have,” Ishak said.

“As the manager said, I only wish we had more time to prepare, but duty calls and we must perform to the best of our ability in Korea.”

Answering questions posed by the media, team captain Nik Safuan Ismade said he was proud to be skipper of a very young but determined side.

He said he was quietly confident of a good showing as the side was very balanced in age, experience and dedication to the national side.

Nik Safuan was also captain of the Malaysian national sevens team which took part in this year’s Hong Kong Sevens tournament.

Korea and Singapore reach Division I Final

Thursday, 02 June 2011 15:52

Taken from: http://www.asian5nations.com

Korea eked out a tense 34-20 win over the upstart Philippines Volcanoes in the semi finals of the HSBC Asian 5 Nations Division I Tournament held today in Ansan, Korea.  In this afternoon’s other semi final, Singapore ran in eight tries to power past regional rivals Malaysia and book their place in the final against the hosts.

The winners of the Division I final will be promoted to the HSBC Asian 5 Nations Top 5 competition, the pinnacle of Asian ruby, in 2012.  Malaysia and the Philippines will face off to avoid relegation to Division II of next year’s competition.

Featuring five of its Japan-based professional players in a XV stocked with experience, Korea looked the much stronger side on paper and indeed they dominated the first half, opening the scoring through winger Kim Gwong Min in the fifth minute.

Tries to No 8 Park Soon Chai and a conversion and penalty to fullback Hong Jun Ki saw the Koreans out to a 15-nil lead before the Philippines got on the board through a penalty to flyhalf Oliver Saunders.  Korea added another try to flyhalf Yoon Il Tae with the conversion from Hong extending the hosts lead to 22-3.

Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession in the first half Korea couldn’t extinguish the Philippines Volcanoes, as the visitors scored their first try in the 39th minute to bring the score to 22-8 at the break.

The second half saw Philippines captain Michael Letts open the scoring with a try in the 48th minute to narrow the gap to 22-13.  Korea quickly replied with a second try to Kim Gwong Min before Volcanoes winger Matthew Saunders scored in the 74th minute to bring the Philippines to 27-20 behind after the successful conversion by Saunders’ brother Oliver.

An historic upset was in the offing as the Philippines, unranked in world rugby, were threatening to take the scalp of the world’s 33rd ranked team with just ten minutes remaining.

The last period turned into a seesaw affair with the Philippines giving up some unforced errors that eventually led to Korea scoring its fifth and final try in the 81st minute through reserve prop Kim Hyun Soo.  Hong Jun Ki’s third conversion of the match brought the final result to 34-20 in a scoreline that flattered the hosts.

Today’s result left neither team fully satisfied but both in the position to achieve some notable milestones.  For Korea, a chance to return to the Top 5 in 2012 is in the cards, while the Philippines have made a strong claim to sticking in Division I after being promoted from Division II last season.  Today was the first loss for the Philippines in four years of HSBC Asian 5 Nations competition.

Philippines coach Expo Mejia said, “The loss is disappointing because we gave the game away through unforced errors but I am very proud of the guys.

“We stood toe to toe against one of the heavyweights of Asian rugby this afternoon. We didn’t get the result we wanted but we’ve shown that we have what it takes to stay in Division I and to even be one of the Top 5 teams in Asia.”

Korea coach Kim Myung Joo said, “Of course we are happy to have the win today but we don’t feel like we showed what we are capable of on the pitch. We achieved what we wanted to, which is to give ourselves a chance to return to the Top 5, but today we played too much as individuals and not enough as a team. We need to fix that on Saturday.”

Kim Jeong Min, captain of Korea, spoke about the importance of promotion to his side, “It was hard for us to watch the Top 5 from the sidelines this year but we now have a chance to correct that. We played Singapore in 2008 and we beat them well. We are at home so we know we can get the result we need. It is vital for us to be promoted so we can revive the reputation of Korean rugby.”

To do that, Korea will have to meet the challenge of high flying Singapore after the Rugby Lions turned in an eight-try performance against Malaysia in a 52-17 win.

Despite the scoreline, Singapore struggled for possession in the opening exchanges today as Malaysia threw everything into attack and stifled Singapore attacks through some committed tackling.  Malaysia opened the scoring through a try to towering lock Dineshvaran Krishnan in the eighth minute.

Malaysia could not convert the steady pressure into points however, giving Singapore the chance to get back into the game. It was an opportunity that Singapore took well, particularly the forward pack which shone today scoring four of Singapore’s eight tries.  Singapore’s first try came through scrumhalf Azmi Mohammad Suliman.  No. 8 Peter McFeely added Singapore’s second try from a pushover try after the pack wheeled Malaysia’s scrum to win the put-in on the five metre line.

McFeely was one of three forwards earning new caps for Singapore who scored today, alongside flanker Matthew Head and lock Marc Warburton. Malaysia, who had six first caps of its own in today’s XV, rounded out the first half scoring with a try from centre Isao Turuva, a just reward for a tireless day on the park.  Turuva’s tally brought the score to 12-all at halftime.

In the second half Singapore lock Warburton continued the pack’s pristine performance on the afternoon with his try in the fifth minute giving Singapore a lead they would not relinquish at 17-12.   Warburton’s try was followed ten minutes later by flanker Matthew Head who crossed the line in the 54th minute.

Five minutes later Singapore was awarded a penalty try after one of their players was interfered with while chasing down a well-weighted chip kick near the Malaysian line.  Malaysian No 8 Nasri Ahmad was sin-binned for the offence and Singapore scored two more tries while Malaysia was a man down to open the floodgates for good.

Singapore flyhalf Suhaimi Mohammad Amran had a strong day with the boot making six conversions, most of them from deep in the wings to round out a high-octane performance for Singapore.

The result will have given Singapore a much-needed boost in their first test match under new coach Des Thornton.  It was also a measure of revenge after Singapore nearly lost the same encounter in last year’s Division I competition, winning just 25-23 at home.  Singapore will now face the huge challenge of facing off against Korea in front of their fervent home supporters.  The last time the two teams met was in the 2009 Top 5 when Korea dispatched Singapore 66 – nil in Seoul.

The 3rd/4th place playoff between Malaysia and the Philippines will be played at 13.00 at the Ansan-Wa Stadium in Ansan, Korea on Saturday June 4.  Korea and Singapore will kick off at 15.00 at the same venue.

JOHOR HOSTS RUGBY BONANZA

Friday, 03 June 2011 08:15

The State of Johor in the southern tip of the Malaysian peninsula will be a hive of activities come the second weekend of July this year.

Johor will be hosting two major rugby tournaments in one venue from July 09-10:

• The inaugural Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) Under-20s seven-a-side tournament; and
• The Iskandar Malaysia 10s tournament for Under-15s and Under-18s

Already Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan (ranked 27th in the world by IRB), Hong Kong (34th), Chinese Taipei (61st) and Malaysia (57th)  have confirmed entries.

Local coordinator and MRU vice-president Tuan Haji Ibrahim Che Awang said the organizers are hoping to attract least eight to 12 entrants from ARFU’s 14 member union and seven associate unions.

The numbers are likely to be made up by neighbouring Singapore, Thailand, Japan, China and possibly India – member countries who show promise of sending over a national side.

The tournament is an extension of ARFU’s new strategic plan approved last year which ensures the continued growth of the game of rugby over the next 10 years.

According to the IRB’s review of the Year 2010, rugby sevens is going from strength to strength in Asia with the establishment of an Asian Sevens series building on the Asian Games held in China.

The review assessed the Games as very successful where daily crowds of over 30,000 watched rugby 7’s games.

Meanwhile, Haji Ibrahim said the deadline for the Iskandar Malaysia 10’s has been set for June 17.

Replacing Johor’s premier rugby event, the Tunku Makhota Johor 7s, the Iskandar Malaysia 10’s organizers are banking on attracting 32 entries for the Under-15 and the same number for the Under-18 category.

He said the winner of each category will take home a cash prize of RM2000 each while runner-up gets RM1000 each.

Haji Ibrahim said he was hopeful some schools from neighbouring countries would submit entries.

But the bulk of entrants are expected from local schools, he said.

SUKMA XIV: Terengganu aim to retain SUKMA gold

Friday, 03 June 2011 10:48

DEFENDING rugby sevens champions Terengganu are among the 14 states competing in this year’s Sukan Malaysia XIV being hosted in the capital, Kuala Lumpur.

The two-day championship on 08 and 09 June next week will be staged at University Malaya Grounds starting at 9am on Day 1.

Day 1 will see the 14 states play pool games while the play-offs will be held on Day 2.

The 14 states have been grouped in four pools. Pools A and B have three teams each while Pool C and D four teams each.

Organisers said winners of each pool and their respective runners-up will then proceed into a quarter-final play-off to determine four semi-finalists, and eventually the finalists to determine the gold and silver medal winners.

Losing semi-finalists will play off for the bronze medal and fourth placing.

However, participating does not end there for teams who finish in third and fourth place in their respective pools.

The double-ended tournament will accommodate them in a Plate and Bowl competition just so all 14 states know where they stand in the overall competition.

All told Terengganu is fielding a strong side and is expected to face a strong challenge from silver medalists Johor and Sabah, who took home the bronze last year.

The annual youth Games which allows only those aged 23 and below to participate will also see revived interest from Negeri Sembilan and Kedah, considered to be dark horse of the tournament.

The tournament will be overseen by MRU officials and referees.

Details of the pool composition and the full draws on Day 1 will be released next week.

Power NS Royal 7s hunts for new winne

Tuesday, 21 June 2011 20:18

ORGANISERS of the 13th Power NS Royal Rugby 7s tournament are happy with the response from clubs and say the two-day tournament is ready to kick off of on 2nd July at Seremban Municipal Grounds.

And, to make it interesting, a new winner will be crowned come the afternoon of Sunday 3rd July as the defending champions will be conspicuous by their absence.

To kick-start the official proceedings, a Press conference is being held at the Royal Selangor Club, Merdeka Square, on Monday 27th June, according to NSRU President Tuan Haji Abdul Jalil Borhanuddin.

“We are more than happy with the response,” Haji Jalil said of the overwhelming response by 24 local club sides, and 16 school teams to compete in the Under-19 category.

“We are really fortunate to have the backing of our usual sponsors, headed by the State Government of Negeri Sembilan,” he said.

Sponsors’ representatives are to be thanked and will meet personally with NSRU Royal Patron Tunku Laxamana Dato Seri Utama Tunku Naquiyuddin Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar, who will be chief guest at the Press conference.

Haji Jalil said defending champions Sandakan Eagles have pulled out of the tournament. No reason was given when their withdrawal notice was sent via text message to Haji Jalil this week.

This perhaps paves the way for another showdown between the season front-runners Cobra and Keris Conlay, this year’s finalists in the MRU Super League champions.

To win the Power NS Royal Sevens would a major title for Keris Conlay, who only came into being last year.

They are being powered by the presence of four seasoned rugby sevens players from Sabeto Rugby Club in Fiji, led by former national Fiji rep, the lanky Isei Lewaqai.

Keris Conlay also boasts a decent crop of home-grown players who are noted for an immense depth of talent and have been blending superbly with their Fijian brothers at their training grounds, Victoria Institute, in central Kuala Lumpur.

Cobra, winners of the first NS Royal Sevens in 1999, will be out to capture the silverware that has eluded them for the past 11 years.

No doubt head coach Usaia Biumaiwai has already strategized ways of getting to the final and winning it. Cobra is expected to mix experienced players with youth from their academy for this outing to Seremban.

It will be interesting how Biumaiwai converts into rugby sevens flair the success enjoyed so far by Cobra in the 10s and the full code this season. The NS Royal Sevens is the first major tournament in the abbreviate code this season.

The Petaling Jaya-based club has already two national titles this year – the MRU 10s and the MRU Super League.

But expect a tough challenge from the flagship club of the NSRU, the NS Wanderers, and Putra Jaya-based club ASAS.

Wanderers this season are without imported players from Fiji who have been the backbone of their side which has won the tournament the most number of times in the tournament’s history.

ASAS, on the other hand, is capable of causing and upsets and must be taken seriously even though they like to be labeled as dark horses of any major sevens rugby tournament.

Haji Jalil said the 24 club sides will be divided into six pools while the Under-19 section for schoolboys will feature four pools.

The furthest traveling team is reportedly Trafalgar High School from Cape Town in South Africa, who is making their debut at the tournament.

The Under-19 championship has been dominated by Maties Academy of Stellenbosch, also in Cape Town since they first competed in 2005. They won every year until 2009. Maties were unable to compete last year because of school term changes prompted by the Soccer World Cup hosted in South Africa last year.

Haji Jalil extends an invitation to all participating club officials to attend the Press Conference which gets under way at 4pm on Monday, 27th June at the Card Room, Royal Selangor Club at Merdeka Square.

The managers’ meeting will be held at 8.30pm on Friday, 1st July at the official hotel, Royal Bintang, Seremban.

Late entries may boost ARFU Under-20s Sevens

Wednesday, 22 June 2011 10:48

THREE nations – Brunei, Sri Lanka and Singapore – are expected to make quick decisions this week about participating in the ARFU Under-20s rugby sevens tournament which gets under way in Johor on the 9th of July.

An ARFU council meeting in Bangkok over the weekend heard that delegates from these countries scurried back to their respective unions in order to muster plans for their presence in Johor Bahru for the two-day tournament.

Malaysian delegate at the Bangkok meeting and MRU Vice-President Tuan Haji Ibrahim Che Awang, who is also the local tournament coordinator, said the four confirmed entries are: Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

“Too bad if the other three don’t confirm, the four confirmed entrants will just have to play a round robin,” Haji Ibrahim said.

“The ARFU Under-20s will go ahead.”

He also confirmed the withdrawal of Chinese Taipei, and the lack of response from ARFU affiliates who were expected to field a side – Thailand, China and India.

The shrinking of the ARFU-sanctioned tournament has come a blessing in disguise for the organizers, Haji Ibrahim said.

“Because we have more time at our hands (caused by the smaller ARFU tournament), we can now stage a touch rugby tournament for Under-12 students. Eight schools have already confirmed,” he said.

The touch rugby tournament would be a big boost for primary schools in the Sate, Haji Ibrahim confirmed.

He also finalized the appearance in Johor on the final of the tournament by MRU 10s and MRU Super League champions Cobra.

They play a Johor Selection side in the full code as a curtain-raiser to the final of the ARFU rugby sevens championship.

“These are the added bonuses we have come up with in order to fill up the programme, they are good back-up events, and we are very pleased,” Haji Ibrahim said.

On the Malaysia Iskandar 10s, Haji Ibrahim said that as of this past weekend, 27 teams had confirmed for the Under-15s category while 30 for the Under-18s section.

Organizers will conduct an update of last-minute entrants this week and see if they have met the 32-team quota they wanted for both age groups.
