Rafa M?quez To Become Spanish Citizen

Great news for Barca as a foreign spot opens up for them in the long run.

For Barca, this opens up the possibility of getting a player like Rodrigo Palacio to make the big leap across the pond. The player who is happiest now is fellow compatriate Giovani Dos Santos. The star of the reigning U-17 world champs, who currently plays for Barcelona? reserve squad is looking to move up to the big team. But since M?quez, Samuel Eto? and Ronaldinho currently hold the three non-EU spots on the squad, he was not going to see any action any time soon, this could see him truly become one of their stars of the future.

Luque Keen To Renew Eto'o Partnership At Barca

Newcastle forward Albert Luque has made a 'come-and-get-me' plea to hometown club Barcelona, and said he would love to renew his strike partnership with Samuel Eto'o.

Luque shared a good strike partnership with Samuel Eto'o at Mallorca, from 2000 to 2002, and was excited by the prospect of once again sharing the dressing room with him.

"I would like to be able to play with Samuel [Eto'o], and also Xavi. I also have good relations with many players in the team, such as Puyol and Oleguer.

The Catalan came up the ranks at Barcelona - hence the familiarity with Xavi, Puyol, Oleguer - before being offloaded to Mallorca as a youngster, and subsequently being signed by Deportivo.

He impressed at both clubs, and was linked with a return to the Camp Nou on more than one occasion before moving to Newcastle, and has never hidden his desire to play for his home club.

"I was very close to signing [for Barcelona] two years ago, but in the end I went to Newcastle," he continued. "My desire is to return to Spain, and if it is with a great team, even better."

It is well known that he and Eto'o still share a great bond - just like brothers, in their own words. Speaking of the Cameroon international, Luque said: ?ntil his injury, he was the most decisive player in the world, and Bar? are noticing his absence. I speak with him very often, and I know that he has a lot of desire to return. But he must take it one step at a time to avoid relapses. Does he ask me about my situation? He wants the best for me."

Luque's abilities as a winger-forward - in particular, starting out wide and zeroing in on goal - were what had caught Barcelona's interest. The Catalan can also play up front, and was very close to a move two summers ago, but Barcelona refused to meet Deportivo's inflated asking price. However, he has is now among the list of possibilities Barcelona are studying, as it starts looking increasingly likely they will sign someone this January.

Gudjohnsen double puts Barca back on pole in Spain

MADRID (AFP) - A two-goal blast from Icelandic international Eidur Gudjohnsen helped title holders Barcelona back to the top of the Spanish league, cementing an emphatic 4-1 win at Real Mallorca.

Gudjohnsen, signed from English Premiership champions Chelsea in the summer, is proving an away-day specialist for his new club as he has now netted four times in the league, all the efforts coming on Barca's travels.

The win, completed with late strikes from Andres Iniesta and Santiago Ezquerro's after Victor had threatened to make a game of it by netting for Mallorca midway through the second half, propelled Barca on to 26 points from 11 games, one more than overnight leaders Seville.

Despite the setback, he is full of praise for the side now managed by the man who guided him through his early career at FC Porto and he even goes as far as to suggest they could be Champions League victors in 2007. 'What really struck me about Chelsea this time was their huge desire,' adds Deco. 'They wanted the win far more than us and literally walked all over us in the first game in London, which was a big surprise.

'Chelsea have superstars all over the pitch, but also a great togetherness. Look how intensely they celebrated their goal and at the final whistle at Stamford Bridge; this was a team who wanted to win more than their opponents.

'They are a terrific unit and a good example to us. Maybe we have some players who can make it difficult for them and if we meet again later in the competition, the result could be different, but you have to be prepared to match their desire to beat Chelsea. We were not up to the task this time.

'Apart from Barcelona, if I had to pick the team that looks like being Champions League winners right now, I would have to say Chelsea. They have the players, the tactical organisation and the hunger to go all the way.'

We should find out whether Barcelona still have all of those winning qualities in their next two Champions League fixtures.
