Hara Chiaki Married
November 16, 2010
Happier news for actress Hara Chiaki (36), who made a tearful announcement to the media yesterday. She revealed that she recently got married, while also talking about her ongoing battle with cancer. She said that she met her TV producer husband (37) on the set of a Fuji TV drama in 2007. When they started dating, she told him that she had undergone surgery for uterine cancer in February 2005 and was believed to have made a full recovery. But the cancer reappeared at the end of last year and she had her womb surgically removed in January.
Speaking to reporters yesterday, Hara tearfully thanked her husband for having been hugely supportive throughout the ordeal. She said that due to the ongoing treatment and because she has to wear a wig and suffers from swelling, she doesn't wear a wedding ring and they have no plans for a wedding ceremony. She is scheduled to continue chemotherapy until May of next year.

Hoshino Tetsuro Dies at 85
November 16, 2010
Songwriter Hoshino Tetsuro died of heart failure at a Tokyo hospital yesterday. He was 85. His funeral will be held in the central Tokyo district of Minami Aoyama on November 19. One of the most prolific lyricists of the postwar era, credited with more than 4,000 songs, Hoshino received multiple cultural awards for his contributions to the arts. He was chairman of the Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers and honorary chairman of the Japanese Lyricists Association. Among his many hits, he penned the theme song for the hugely popular "Otoko wa Tsurai Yo" movie series and such enka classics as "Hakodate no Onna" (Kitajima Saburo, 1965), "365-ho no March" (Suizenji Kiyoko, 1968, photo right), and "Midaregami" (Misora Hibari, 1987).
After graduating high school, Hoshino went to work on a deep-sea fishing trawler. In 1952, while recovering from illness, he entered a magazine lyric writing contest. His work was recognized and he made his professional debut as a writer the following year. In his lyrics he portrayed the subtleties of human nature and the joys and suffering of life in a way that resonated with fans of enka ballads.

Arashi breaks personal record with "Hatenai Sora"
Mon, November 15, 2010 (7:40pm EST)
Arashi's 34th single, "Hatenai Sora," is officially confirmed as the top single for this week. The single sold 572,000 copies, surpassing their previous personal record set by their debut song "A-RA-SHI" in 1999 (557,000 copies).
"Hatenai Sora" is the group's 30th number-one single. The only other artists who have reached that milestone are B'z and Ayumi Hamasaki. Arashi achieved it 11 years after their debut, ahead of B'z (14 and a half years) but slightly behind Hamasaki (10 years).
The song also marks Arashi's sixth #1 single for the year, setting a new record for male artists. The previous highest was five, set by The Checkers in 1985 and tied by L'Arc~en~Ciel in 1998. However, Arashi is tied with Ayumi Hamasaki among all artists, as she already achieved six in 2001.

"JIN" drama gets prime time rerun
Wed, November 17, 2010 (7:00pm EST)
The popular 2009 drama series "JIN" is already set to have a sequel next spring, but the original will be returning to the small screen for a special rerun broadcast. While television dramas are often rerun in afternoon time slots, "JIN" will apparently be the first to be rerun during "golden time" (7pm-10pm).
The original 11 episodes will be edited as a "director's cut" and trimmed to fit within 9 hours of broadcast. It will then be divided into two 4-and-a-half-hour episodes, to be aired nationally on December 27 and 28, starting at 7:00pm on both nights.
When it was first aired during the autumn of 2009, "JIN" was very well received. It recorded ratings of over 20% for several episodes, and the finale reached 25.3% ratings. The show has also won various awards, both in Japan and overseas.

Kazumasa Oda's "Jiko Best" ships 3 million
Wed, November 17, 2010 (8:12pm EST)
As further proof of his steady popularity, singer Kazumasa Oda (63) has just achieved a huge milestone. His compilation album "Jiko Best" now exceeds 3 million copies shipped, as of November 17.
Of course, Oda is not the first to reach 3 million with an album. Within the past decade, both Kobukuro and Hikaru Utada have done so (the latter multiple times). However, Oda is the first solo male artist to achieve that feat, and he is also the oldest at 63 years and 2 months.
"Jiko Best" has been selling well ever since its release in April 2002. It reached 1 million copies shipped after its first month, then reached 2 million in December 2004. In May of this year, it appeared on Oricon's weekly album charts (top 300) for the 400th time.
