CESC FABREGAS is the most talented playmaker in Europe right now. No question.
Fenerbache 2 Arsenal 5
The Arsenal genius did not just play the pass of the year to silence the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium last night. He played the TWO best passes.
Oh, and just for good measure, his free-kick teed-up Alex Song for goal No 4 in Gunners’ amazing five-goal blitz against the Turks.
Fenerbahce boss Luis Aragones’ last act as coach of the Spanish national team was to leave Fabregas out of his starting line-up for most of their Euro 2008 campaign.
The 21-year-old only made the final against Germany because David Villa was injured. Even then he was hauled off after an hour.
Fortunately for football, Arsene Wenger does not share Aragones’ reservations and would not contemplate leaving Fabregas out for a match of any significance.
And that faith was rewarded with a virtuoso performance from the Spaniard to match his unforgettable demolition of AC Milan last season.
Arsenal’s kids were supposed to be scared out of their wits about stepping into the Istanbul bear pit.
Instead they took everything the hostile crowd could throw at them — no one more so than Fabregas, who chewed up the Turks and spat them out in little pieces.
Maybe Aragones’ presence in the Fenerbahce dugout was all the motivation Fabregas needed to take this game by the scruff of the neck.
With just 10 minutes on the clock, Fabregas got the ball on the halfway line and threaded the perfect 30-yard pass into Emmanuel
Adebayor’s path. With the home defence in disarray, Adebayor calmly stroked his shot past keeper Volkan Demirel.
Yet Fabregas had barely got started. Just seconds later he carved Fenerbahce apart for a second time, this time setting up Walcott with another peach of a pass.
The England striker sprinted round keeper Volkan before squeezing his shot just inside a post from the tightest of angles.
Welcome to hell? This was more like heaven for the small knot of travelling Arsenal fans tucked away high in a corner of the stadium.
It was a good job, though, that Fabregas was in such superlative form. Because Arsenal were anything but convincing at the back Robbed by injury of Kolo Toure, skipper William Gallas and Bacary Sagna, their makeshift defence were an accident waiting to happen.
And they handed Fenerbahce a much-needed lifeline on 19 minutes.
Ugur Boral’s free-kick was volleyed across goal by Daniel Guiza, deflected off Mikael Silvestre and flew past stand-in skipper Manuel Almunia in the Gunners goal.
But any ideas of a Fenerbahce fightback were strangled at birth as Arsenal restored their two-goal advantage with the match still less than a quarter completed.
Brazilian defender Edu made a hash of a long punt down the middle and Abou Diaby had the strength to hold off Claudio Maldonado before shooting low into the far corner.
The Turks were in meltdown and it was hard to believe they had gone 15 Champions League games unbeaten at home before this.
Even with the points in the bag by half-time, there was no question of Arsenal taking it easy. And four minutes after the restart
they were even further ahead when Song volleyed in Fabregas’ deep free-kick.
Even a late strike by Guiza could not take the gloss off Arsenal’s breathtaking display.
And sub Aaron Ramsey had the final word when he fired home the fifth from the edge of the box.
Wenger’s side now need just one more win from their three remaining Group G games to be sure of qualification for the next round.
They should wrap it up against Fenerbahce at the Emirates in two weeks’ time.
It is safe to assume that Senor Aragones will not be relishing that particular trip.
Fabregas, though, is already licking his lips in anticipation. |

ARSENAL RATING
Almunia: 8.5 -
Despite picking the ball out on two ocassions, he produced a great captain's performance. Made three saves from one on one encounters. A reliable sticksman.
Eboue: 7.5 -
His defensive duties are questionable judging from tonight's performance as he left far too room when he went forward. He did however make a great goal-line clearance, and contributed well to Arsenal's dynamism going forward, assisted Ramsey especially well for Arsenal's fifth.
Song: 7.5 -
A much better performance than Everton's shocking display. Finished a great move with his right foot.
Silvestre: 7.0 -
At times had poor positional sense.
Clichy: 8.0 -
Great trickery on the left side of defence. Good composure. If there is one thing Arsene Wenger can do it is produce, train, and mould superb left backs.
Diaby: 9.0 -
Outstanding! Amazing feet. This time last year it looked like he had no left foot. Then he is deployed on that flank and constantly criticised, but it has done his game the world of good as his footwork is exquisite. Good goal.
Fabregas: 8.0 -
Played the quarterback role with good effect. His long range passing was spot on and he began many a sound Arsenal move.
Denilson: 7.5 -
Passed well and will have enjoyed his performance. Combined well with Fabregas in attempting to manufacture late goals.
Walcott: 8.0 -
Great pace - again. Had Roberto Carlos - a player whose poster he probably had on his wall as a kid - in his pocket. Doubled the Gunners' advantage within seconds of Adebayor's first.
Nasri: 6.5 -
Didn't play well. Was mugged on a lot of ocassions. His first substandard performance in an Arsenal shirt.
Adebayor: 7.5 -
Held the ball up well and provided ample time for his midfield to join him in attack. Roamed the forward line. Opened Arsenal's account on the 11th minute and silenced the Istanbul atmosphere.
Substitutes:
Ramsey: 7.0 -
A cameo performance was capped with a goal. Attempted audacious passes.
Djourou: 6.0 -
Vela: n/a - |
