Schumacher: We achieved the maximum
Michael Schumacher believes that Mercedes GP achieved the best result it could have wished for during this afternoon’s Indian Grand Prix, with the Brackley-based squad recording a double points finish at the Buddh International Circuit.
With Schumacher finishing in fifth place, team-mate and compatriot Nico Rosberg directly followed the seven-time Champion home to round out the top six runners.
"I am obviously happy about the race today," Schumacher explained. "We achieved the maximum that we could hope for, and as a team we maximised our potential. Fifth and sixth places are a great result for us.
"On top of that, my car was very nicely sorted for the race and very stable. At the start, everything worked out according to my strategy as I deliberately didn't want to use KERS in the first two corners and save it for the long straight where I knew that I could make up some positions.
"In the second stint, I managed to maintain my tyres so I could stay out longer and that was enough for fifth place. What's really important at the moment is that we keep pushing and trying to improve, and that is what we achieved today.
"To the organisers of the first Indian Grand Prix, I would like to send a big compliment; I'm sure that I am not the only one to say that this was a very positive debut ". |

Mercedes have today announced that they will race under the name Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team from next season.
The new name incorporates AMG, the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz. The brand already supplies both the F1 safety car and the medical car, and has done since 1996.
The team also announced today that their 2012 car will not make its official track debut until the second of the pre-season tests, on 21st February in Barcelona.
“Our new team name fuses the proud traditions of AMG and the Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows at the pinnacle of motorsport, “ said Norbert Haug, Vice President at Mercedes-Benz Motorsport. “These three letters are synonymous with high technology, sporting performance and excitement and this step is a further strong sign of the strategic commitment Mercedes-Benz has made to Formula One. 16 of the 24 drivers on the grid at the season’s final Grand Prix in Brazil have, or have had, a connection to Mercedes-Benz.
“In addition to the role of a works team, our commitment to Formula One comprises the customer engine programme and supply of the official Safety and Medical Cars.”
Team principal Ross Brawn talked about the name change, and explained why the 2012 challenger would not be ready for the first winter test of 2012.
“We are very proud to reveal our new team name today,” said Brawn. “It adds another strong performance element to our team’s identity and, by virtue of being shared between Brackley and Brixworth, will forge even stronger links within our team.
“At the factory, we have been focused for some time on the challenge of 2012, and our very clear ambition to move forward up the grid next year. As always, the winter development and manufacturing processes are a trade-off between time for finding performance in the factory, and time for delivering that performance during pre-season testing.
“We believe that the decision to run the car at the second winter test is the optimum compromise for our design and development programme with F1 W03.”

Mercedes to delay test debut of 2012 car
Dec.6 (Reuters) Mercedes will delay the track debut of their 2012 Formula One car – designated the MGP-W03 – until the second test of the season in Barcelona on 21 February 2012, less than a month before the opening race in Australia, the team said on Monday.
Mercedes also announced that their official team name would change to Mercedes AMG Petronas to bring in Mercedes-Benz performance brand AMG.
AMG already supplies the sport with both the safety car and medical car and Mercedes motorsport vice-president Norbert Haug said there would be a technology transfer between the partners.
“At the factory, we have been focused for some time on the challenge of 2012, and our very clear ambition to move forward up the grid next year,” said team principal Ross Brawn in a statement.
“As always, the winter development and manufacturing processes are a trade-off between time for finding performance in the factory, and time for delivering that performance during pre-season testing.
“We believe that the decision to run the car at the second winter test is the optimum compromise for our design and development programme with F1 W03.”
Under new rules for 2012, cars can take part in testing only when they have passed the mandatory FIA race crash tests.
That means teams have to decide whether to maximise development and miss out on testing or get in as much track time as possible while signing off the design process earlier than they might have wished.
Mercedes finished the 2011 season fourth overall with German drivers Nico Rosberg and seven-times world champion Michael Schumacher.
Rosberg has yet to win a race while Schumacher, 42, has not been on the podium since he began his comeback in 2010 after three years out.
The new season starts in Melbourne on March 18, which allows Mercedes just eight days of testing before heading for Australia.
“It’s not a big problem, it’s a very deliberate decision on our part for a variety of reasons,” Mercedes team CEO Nick Fry told reporters in a conference call.
“The first one is giving ourselves the maximum amount of time to develop performance and because the two tests are two weeks apart, we believe we are better off spending that additional time on developing the performance side.
“Most of the top teams are now very good at simulation,” added Fry.
“You can rest assured that before the car physically hits the track…we will have done a substantial amount of work here at the factory both rig testing the car in its entirety, rig testing parts of the car and also of course working on the driver in the simulator.”
Fry, who helped steer the Mercedes team’s predecessors Brawn GP to both 2009 titles, pointed out that Brawn had minimal testing and still came out with a world-beater.
“We think the time is better invested in development rather than driving physically on the track in the first test,” he said. |

Mercedes copycat Lotus braking system
Jan.16 (GMM) Mercedes GP is the next team working on a copy of Lotus’ innovative ‘braking ride-height correction’ system ahead of the 2012 F1 world championship season.
Shortly after news broke that the former Renault team had devised a passive and therefore legal system to stabilise a car’s ride height under braking, reports emerged that Ferrari is “working on a similar system”.
The BBC said last week that it believed the Italian giant was “the only other team to have contacted the FIA” about the concept.
But Italian reports, including on the Italiaracing website and the daily La Gazzetta dello Sport, claim Mercedes GP is also working to “quickly copy” the Lotus idea.
Mercedes does not intend to take its new car, the W03, to the first official test at Jerez early next month, instead opting for additional factory time ahead of the second session at Barcelona.
It is also rumoured that Red Bull experimented with a Lotus-style braking system back in 2010 but abandoned it.
