'The Magnificent Century' Was Described As The Ottoman-Era ‘Sex And The City’ When It First Aired In Turkey
It was called the 'historical bodice-ripping megahit' in the entertainment industry magazine 'Variety' and tells the story of a 'sexy' sultan and his exploits in the harem, Middle East current affairs magazine Al-Monitor reported.
The Turkish soap opera has also triggered a controversy after it was aired by Astro's Maya HD and Astro Prima channels recently.
Viewers had alleged that there were obscene scenes and shared their fears that a lot of the content is not suitable to be viewed by children.
"This drama can be described as a misrepresentation of esteemed historical figures. It strives to tarnish the glories of the Ottoman Empire by creating unflattering lies.," one shocked viewer shared her concerns on Facebook.
"This drama is well-known and has been banned in several Islamic countries. The reasons are:
- Insulting Islam
- depict obscene scenes that are derogatory to the religion
- distort and slander the historic legacy of the empire
- it celebrates the fall of the empire that is associated with the glories of Islamic civilization.," another netizen highlighted in writing a long advisory to Astro about what viewers find objectionable in the soap opera.
As Malaysian viewers react to the scandalous scenes in ‘The Magnificent Century’, the Film Censorship Board (LPF) has stepped in and directed MEASAT Broadcast Network Systems Sdn Bhd (ASTRO) to review and censor the contents of the soap opera, Bernama reports.
Most Malaysians might be unaware of the controversy surrounding the show when it debuted in its home country, going on to achieve phenomenal global sales that also speaks volumes of the rule of democracy in Turkey today.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had criticised the show when it first aired in Turkey as there were purported scenes showing Suleiman I hitting the bottle and romping about with the women in his harem.
One of his MPs Oktay Saral, had even proposed a new bill and said the show 'Imposed on Suleiman the Magnificent, a person who spent his life on horseback serving his country and his nation, is a life entirely composed of the bedroom and based on twisted relationships.'
"He went against social conventions at the time by marrying a Ukrainian woman from his harem," Daily Mail reported on the earlier controversy.
However the soap opera has proven to be a runaway hit for its Turkish producers. According to Al-Monitor, the historical epic has aired in 86 countries. Viewers in the US can even see it with English subtitles on Netflix.
At the end of the day, Erdogan's government did not succeed in pushing through a bill to control filmmakers and there might be some good coming from all the publicity.
"Magnificent Century" was not banned, and certainly should not be banned, even if Erdogan dislikes it, Al-Monitor reports.
'This is an opportunity to engage large audiences in reconciliatory ways, rather than agitating entire populations’ cultural sensitivities.
"Besides all that, once the show broadcasts in China, one can expect a larger influx of Chinese tourists to Turkey. As a fond lover of economic opportunities, I am certain Erdogan would not mind that side effect of the show," the report concludes.

Honestly.. aku rasa melayu ni kena terima hakikat.. beragama islam tak semestinya hidup ko suci murn ...
Hehe ingat aku sorg je found him tasty. Nasib baik ada drama 1001 nights pkl 3 ptg tu. Tu pun ada halit ergenc gak. Kat situ dia nmpk muda skit. Muka garang ala2 mysterious my taste
