Europestar RCR CKD assembly to begin in August
According to a report by Automotive World, CKD assembly of the Europestar Lotus RCR at Youngman抯 plant in Jinan, China is set to begin in August 2008 this year. The Europestar RCR is a badge engineered left hand drive pre-facelift version of the Proton GEN2 we have here on our local shores. A total of 150,000 CKD kits have been ordered for the next 6 years - which is about 25,000 units a year.
The Europestar RCR was initially launched by Youngman in early January this year, and sales began with a batch of 30,000 CBU imported units of the left-hand drive car from Proton抯 plant in Malaysia. Before launch date, the car had already received 1,500 bookings. The RCR is being pushed in China by an initial appointment of 40 dealers which will provide a sales, service and spare parts network.
Here抯 something interesting: the rebadging deal includes royalty payments for legal usage of the Proton GEN2 design. So legally, Youngman - the company behind the Europestar brand - holds the rights for the Proton GEN2 designs in China.
If another Chinese company decides to rip the GEN2 off, it won抰 be Proton against a Chinese company in the Chinese courts. It will be a Chinese company against another Chinese company, which could lead to more favorable results than the precedents we have seen previously where a Chinese company who has ripped off a Japanese or western design can get away with it easily.
There will be more cars from Europestar in the Chinese market in the future. While there will likely continue to be some form of platform and parts sharing with Proton, future Europestars will be engineered by Lotus engineering consultants and will be be much further differentiated from the Protons it may share parts with - something like how a Seat Ibiza is a Volkswagen Polo but does not look like one.

SUV-maker Huatai Auto to launch first sedan in 2009
May 28, 2008 - China's SUV-maker Huatai Automobile is expected to launch its first Huatai-brand sedan in the second half of next year. This self-developed B-class car has integrated the exterior design by a Chinese auto design firm as well as the engines and transmission by Italian VM and German ZF. Carrying the Huatai logo, the sedan will come in the gasoline and diesel powered versions, with young white-collars and businesspeople as its target customers.
As a young Chinese SUV manufacturer founded in 2000, Shandong, Rongcheng-based Huatai Auto has set its new strategy of developing the mid- to high-end sedans by using the national and global automaking technologies. In the past few years, Huatai Auto has been a powerful supplier of SUVs in the Chinese and global market. Its entry into the sedan segment will expand its product lineup and turn a new page in its future growth. At a recent ceremony, Huatai unveiled the new sedan model and and its sedan logo (which looks like the Windows page flapping in the BMW circle?), but did not reveal the company's blueprint in detail.
The Chinese SUV maker, also a partner of South Korea's Hyundai Motor, introduced Hyundai's advanced Sante Fe in China earlier this year. Huatai has been making the Sante Fe, and the Terracan SUV in China for several years now, and have received permission from Hyundai to rebadge the Terracan, and the Sante Fe as its own vehicles.
Huatai-Hyundai has teamed up with SAIC-owned brand, Roewe, to stick the Rover-acquired 1.8t K series engine into the Hyundai Santefe. Huatai is really in a position to shake up the Chinese SUV market. But its ambitions will not stop here -- the SUV maker is making its foray into the sedan market.

JAC to make automatic transmissions
May 21, 2008 - Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co. (JAC) plans to start making four-speed automatic transmissions sometime around September this year. The company is building production lines in Hefei, the capital of Anhui province. Once operational, they will have a total capacity of 100,000 units per year.
Documents released by the local government indicate JAC bought the technology last year from German powertrain engineering company Hofer Powertrain GmbH for about 2 million euros (21.7 million yuan).
In China, automatic transmissions are still considered high-tech products and the suppliers are predominantly foreign companies or their joint ventures.
Although it is well-known for its commercial trucks and buses in China, stated-owned JAC is still a tiny player in the domestic passenger vehicle sector. It has a small van, an SUV and a sedan on the market now. Total sales of the three passenger vehicle models were 48,114 units last year.
The company released two documents on its Web site recently to elicit public comment on the environmental impact of the automatic transmission project. It is a procedure it has to go through to win government approval of the project.
The documents say JAC will build the production lines inside the company's No.1 engine plant in the Hefei Economic & Technological Development Zone. The automatic transmission has a product code of ATF460.
Total investment in the automatic transmission production project is projected to be 410 million yuan ($59 million). Once operational, it will have 285 workers working two shifts a day.
The documents do not say when the company will start making the transmissions. JAC declined to comment on the project.
But a manager from JAC says the company has already started building the production lines, and it plans to start trial production of the transmissions sometime around September this year.
"The four-speed transmissions will be initially mounted on the Benjoy sedan and Rein SUV," the manager says.
A document released by the taxation bureau under the Anhui provincial government indicates JAC bought the transmission technology from Hofer Powertrain last year.
"Hofer transferred the technology for the design and manufacture of the ATF460 automatic transmissions to JAC in May 2007, and the value of the contact is 2,058,000 euros (22,359,000 yuan)," says the document.
Since the technology was deemed high technology, its transfer was exempt from import duties.
But Tom Tan, president of BorgWarner China, says a four-speed automatic transmission is already obsolete since developed markets have moved to five-speed automatic transmissions.
"It is for low-end vehicles of 100,000 yuan($14,310) and below," he says.

Huatai-badged Sante Fe starts limited production
May 21, 2008 - Rongcheng Huatai Automobile Co started the limited production of 1.8L turbocharged Sante Fe SUV under its own brand recently, a company source familiar with the case said.
The source said the 1.8 Turbo engine, which is powering a Roewe model, was sourced from SAIC. Huatai will initially build the SUV in a limited number due to insufficient engine supply.
The 1.8T Huatai Sante Fe is expected to go on sale for around 150,000 yuan ($21,500) later this year, according to China Car Times.
Huatai have been making the Sante Fe, and the Terracan SUV in China for several years now, and have received permission from Hyundai to rebadge the Terracan, and the Sante Fe as their own vehicles. But Huatai didn't get an engine with the deal, and doesn抰 have engines of its own. So the solution was to shop one from SAIC.

Youngman to debut Persona at Guangzhou show
November 12, 2008 - Malaysian carmaker Proton has recently launched its another sedan model Persona, and its Chinese partner Youngman Lotus will expand its product lineup by building the Chinese version of the Proton Persona, which is to debut at the upcoming 2008 Guangzhou auto show next week.
Zhejiang Jinhua-based Youngman Lotus is a joint venture between Youngman Auto and British Lotus Engineering, an affiliate of Proton. The Proton Persona model will have its Chinese edition named "Jingyue," to be specially built by Youngman Lotus for the Chinese market. The Jingyue sedan model will be launched on November 18 at the Guangzhou auto show.
The first batch of the Persona / Jingyue model, now available for ordering, will be delivered to the market at the end of this month. The price of the car is not disclosed yet, but customers can order it by paying a deposit of 2,000 yuan ($293) at Youngman Lotus 4S stores. Customers who are interested in the Proton brand can go to the Guangzhou show for an early look at Jingyue model.
The Proton Person is powered by the Lotus 1.6-liter gasoline engine, mated with the five-speed manual transmission or four-speed automatic transmission. Its Chinese edition shares many features and configurations with the Europestar Lotus RCR ("Jingsu" in Chinese) hatchback introduced by Youngman Lotus earlier this year.
Youngman Auto, formerly a commercial vehicle OEM only, has decided to enter the passenger vehicle market by introducing and producing its partners' models first. Its production of the Proton Gen.2-based Europestar Lotus RCR hatchback has been delayed from August to December this year due to policy requirements.
