Wenger transfer philosophy shows signs of cracking
LONDON (AP) -Arsene Wenger's reputation among Arsenal fans is evident at every home match - "Arsene Knows,'' "In Arsene We Trust'' and "There's Only One Arsene Wenger'' are omnipresent chants and banners at Emirates Stadium.
But the 58-year-old Frenchman's philosophy of unearthing raw talent and molding a young team into a championship-winning side is showing signs of cracking. Arsenal has been praised for its style of football, but the north London club hasn't won the Premier League since 2004 or a major trophy since the FA Cup in 2005.
While there hasn't been a groundswell of anti-Wenger sentiment, the whispers are increasing about Arsenal relying too heavily on youth, and the team becoming a selling club by allowing key players like Mathieu Flamini and Alexander Hleb to leave too early.
But it's still unclear if Wenger is to blame or if his hands are tied by Arsenal's cautious financial approach.
In May, Arsenal director Danny Fiszman promised to "fully support'' Wenger's transfer plans and said there was no "set amount'' of funds.
Wenger could have used that mandate to make some big-name signings to add depth and experience to a young squad whose strong push for the 2008 league title collapsed toward the latter half of the season.
Instead, the manager vowed to stick to his creed, saying "I think a huge player is better than a huge name'' and "We just need talent.''
True to his word, Wenger's only offseason recruits have been France midfielder Samir Nasri, who turned 21 in June, Aaron Ramsey, a 17-year-old midfielder signed from League Championship club Cardiff, and Amaury Bischoff, 21, a Portugal under-21 midfielder signed from Werder Bremen - all talented prospects with limited experience. Wenger even called the move for Bischoff a "gamble'' because of injury problems.
Wenger had promised to bolster his midfield after two of its core components left Arsenal.
Flamini, a 24-year-old Frenchman who formed a strong midfield partnership with Cesc Fabregas, signed with AC Milan on a free transfer. Hleb, a 27-year-old Belarus international, was sold to FC Barcelona for ?15 million (US$23.7 million).
Both reportedly said they would have remained at Arsenal with increased salaries.
Wenger, who has won three league titles and four FA Cups since joining Arsenal in 1996, has shown an uncanny ability over the years to get rid of players at the right time, including Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira.
The departures of Flamini and Hleb did not figure in Wenger's plans, however, despite his comments that he was "comfortable'' with Hleb's departure.
The exodus threatened to extend to striker Emmanuel Adebayor, the team's top scorer last season. In the end, the Togo international agreed to stay after being promised an improved contract, ending weeks of speculation he would move to Barcelona or AC Milan.
Arsenal, however, has made it clear it won't be held hostage by players and agents demanding huge salary increases.
"We believe it is a team sport and we do well, but we don't want the disparity between the top and bottom earner being too big,'' Fiszman said in May. "It takes 11 people on the pitch to deliver.''
So, Wenger could probably not have kept Flamini and Hleb even if he had wanted to.
Ironically, Arsenal is flourishing as a business. The 2006 move from Highbury to Emirates Stadium saw turnover increase by almost 50 percent to a club record 200.8 million pounds (US$406.6 million). But that has inspired prudence rather than the reckless spending sprees witnessed at Chelsea.
Once again this season, Wenger has promising young players in its pipeline breaking into the first team, including 19-year-old Mexico striker Carlos Vela and 16-year-old midfielder Jack Wilshere.
Arsenal also had some good news over the summer with Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna, the stalwarts of the team's defense, signing new long-term contracts.
Wenger, whose contract expires in June 2011, is banking on a philosophy of producing stars rather than buying them, and that it will work in the current reality of the global football market.
"There is a game going on in Europe where the big clubs tap up our players,'' Wenger said Aug. 1. "They let us do the work and develop the players and then they think they can just come in and offer him big wages.''
In effect, Wenger is gambling with the possibility of losing more essential players to teams that will pay them the exorbitant salaries that Arsenal won't.
Worse yet, Arsenal risks becoming little more than an assembly line - transforming the raw elements of players into finished products and then selling them for a profit before they have brought trophies to the club - with some beautiful football thrown in between.

relax....if ur good enough, ur old enough to play for arsenal...dats our philosophy...wenger will not forever be buying young players...he's looking to build a team dat are together from a very young age...toure,clichy,eboue,cesc,denilson,diaby,walcott,RVP,adebayor have been playing 2gether for 3-4 years. sepatutnya, flamini, hleb pun same, n supposedly dis year will start to produce d best teamwork. tapi, oleh sebab duit, diorang blah la...kalo tengok invincible season tu pun, lepas 3-4 season baru jadi hebat camtu...
dun wory, in arsene we trust...im sure, wenger himself will leave if he thinks his policy is not working... |

Business guru praises Arsenal's finances
By Jonathan Chong on Tuesday, August 12, 2008
Business and sports guru Alex Fynn has praised Arsenal over the management of the club's finances, with the servicing of the club's stadium loan and the structure of their wage bill.
Fynn, author of the latest Arsenal book [Ars鑞al - The Making of a Modern Superclub], says that the only danger facing the club would be the unrealised revenue from the sale of converted residential apartments.
Speaking to BBC Business, he says: "The club has massive commercial developments, and in fact they now define the nature of their business as being 'football and property'.
"The only danger is they might have predicated a few decisions on the premise that Highbury Square was going to bring in more revenue than it might realise.
"However, I would say Arsenal's finances are very good, not withstanding the fact they have got a huge debt - which is manageable as long as they fulfil three criteria.
"These are that they play to sell-out grounds in the English Premier League, that they enjoy a successful run in the Champions League, and that they keep their wage to turnover ration at a healthy level under 60%.
"If they continue to do that, there is a very great difference in going in to debt and trying to buy success through the purchase of players, and going into debt to build a new stadium - as Arsenal has done - which triples your matchday income at one fell swoop."
