YUI's new song was not far behind at #2, followed by SDN48, UVERworld, and Idoling!!! The only other new release in the top ten was at #9 from the group DEEP, previously known as COLOR.

Hiro Mizushima's debut novel set to become bestseller
Wed, December 1, 2010 (8:26pm EST)

In October, actor Hiro Mizushima (26) was chosen as the winner of the 5th Poplar Publishing Grand Prize for Fiction for his debut work "KAGEROU," and he later revealed that it will be published as a book on December 15. According to news reports today, there are already more than 400,000 pre-orders for the book, based on information from stores across the country.

One source from the publishing industry said that in the current market, a book that won a New Writer Award would normally only get 4,000 to 5,000 copies printed for a first edition. At 400,000 pre-orders, "KAGEROU" is already poised to become a bestseller.

A few details about the story have also been revealed. The main character in "KAGEROU" is a 41-year-old man, burdened with debt and laid off from his job. Planning to end his life, he climbs over the fence of a department store rooftop in order to jump. However, he is stopped by a mysterious man in black clothes and ends up bound by contract to a secret organization. While continuing to live in suffering, he confronts the question of "What is life?"

Professor in 'The Cove' sues film firms, claiming editing was arbitrary

Friday 03rd December, 03:43 AM JST

TOKYO —

A professor who appeared in the Oscar-winning U.S. documentary ‘‘The Cove’’ about dolphin hunting in Japan has filed a lawsuit against a film right holder and distributor, claiming that his comments were edited arbitrarily and his reputation was thereby damaged.

The first hearing of the case filed by Tetsuya Endo, associate professor of the Health Sciences University of Hokkaido, was held at the Tokyo District Court.

Endo is also seeking a total of 11 million yen in compensation from Medallion Media Co, a Tokyo-based company that holds the film rights in Japan, and the distributor, Tokyo-based Unplugged Inc, and demanding that the scenes in which he appears be removed.

“The Cove,” which shows dolphin hunting in Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture, partly with hidden cameras, won the 2010 Academy Award for best documentary.

According to the complaint by Endo, he was introduced by a fellow researcher abroad to the director of the film, Louie Psihoyos, and asked by him in February 2007 to appear in his documentary concerning mercury contamination of marine life.

Endo claimed the director interviewed him without explaining at all about his intention to criticize dolphin hunting based on particular ideas and values.

‘‘The film is extremely subjective and unscientific,’’ the associate professor stated, adding the director’s act ‘‘destroys the credibility of a scientist who is noted for his objectivity.’‘

In reference to the scene in which Endo was holding in his hand the meat of a dolphin from Taiji, he argued that the director arbitrarily inserted into the scene a caption saying mercury was detected in the meat, even though he was explaining about another dolphin.

The director, who is a photographer and founder of a marine life conservation group, alleges in the film that a large quantity of mercury is contained in dolphin meat.

Medallion said that an official in charge was not available, while Unplugged responded that it will refrain from making comments while the case is proceeding.

Masaki Kanda, Rie Hasegawa dating
Thu, December 2, 2010 (1:25pm EST)

This week's issue of Josei Seven reports a new celebrity couple: actor Masaki Kanda (59) and talento Rie Hasegawa (37), with a 22-year age gap between them. The two first met this past May when Hasegawa made a guest appearance on TV Asahi's travel show "Asa da! Nama desu Tabi Salad," which is hosted by Kanda. According to the magazine, they then started dating in June.

Josei Seven says that the two were first spotted at a store together in June, but lately they have been frequently seen entering and leaving Kanda's apartment building. The magazine also published a photo of the two together in Kanda's neighborhood.

Before this, Hasegawa was in a relationship with actor Junichi Ishida (56), but they broke up in 2004 after about 8 years of dating. Kanda, on the other hand, is divorced. He was married to singer Seiko Matsuda (48) from 1985 to 1997, and he was reported to be in a couple of relationships after that.

The management offices for both Kanda and Hasegawa have apparently acknowledged that they are dating.

Thu, December 2, 2010 (6:55pm EST)

AKB48 member Mariko Shinoda (24) will have a recurring role in Fuji TV's new Monday night drama series, "Taisetsu na Koto wa Subete Kimi ga Oshiete Kureta." This will be her first time acting in a series on that network.

"Necchu Jidai" returns 30 years later, starring Ryuta Sato
Thu, December 2, 2010 (7:38pm EST)

The 1970s drama series "Necchu Jidai" is being revived, this time as a special episode. The show, planned for broadcast in 2011, will star Ryuta Sato (30) and Nao Matsushita (25).

The original "Necchu Jidai" was a school drama starring a much younger Yutaka Mizutani (58) as a humble, passionate teacher named Kodai Kitano, who became one of the most popular teacher characters of that generation. The first season aired for 26 episodes from October 1978 to March 1979, and the finale achieved ratings of 46.7%.

The new special episode will be set 30 years after that series. Sato plays Daichi Nagumo, a selfless former student of Kodai Kitano who followed in his footsteps and became a teacher of a 3rd-grade class. His character is described as being slightly different from the teacher role he played in the popular series "ROOKIES." Matsushita will also be playing a teacher in the drama.

NTV has not set a broadcast date for the episode yet. Still, the network is already considering the possibility of turning it into a full-length series, depending on the audience response to the special episode.

Jack Bauer will always be having a bad day

By Chris Betros

TOKYO —

Some actors become more identified with their characters than their real names when they go abroad. Kiefer Sutherland, who stars as federal counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer in the hit Fox television series “24,” has gained such an enormous following in Japan that whenever he visits, the media simply refer to him as Jack.

Sutherland, 43, who was in Japan recently to promote the upcoming DVD release of the 8th and final season, said: “I think that one of the reasons that we were able to keep the series going for eight seasons was because of fan support in Japan and Asia. It’s been unbelievable.” He also said that because “24” premiered a few months after the terrorist attacks of Sept 11, 2001, many people around the world could identify with the threat of terror, no matter what their culture or language.

Fans in Japan are going to be treated to an overdose of “24.” Fox is going to air seasons 1 to 7 consecutively for one whole week beginning Jan 1. This will earn it a place in the Guinness World Records for the longest running on-air time for a television program. In addition, Fox will run a campaign in which viewers can win 100,000 yen every hour (16.8 million yen in total).

“It’s interesting that DVDs do just as well as the TV episodes,” Sutherland said. “There are fans all over the world who buy the entire series on DVD and watch the whole lot in two days. They like to have it all available.”

The final season sees Jack seeking revenge against corrupt Russian and U.S. government figures for the murder of his girlfriend. He also attempts to expose an upcoming global peace treaty as a sham. Meanwhile, he is being pursued by his own side who see him as a rogue agent.

Sutherland said the final day of filming was very emotional. “I had six months to prepare for it. We had the same crew for Season 1 as we had all the way through Season 8, and I think over the course of making 24 there were 16 marriages, 30 children were born, and we were all a part of that. Honestly, we spent more time with each other than we did with our own families. At the end of the day, I knew it would be up to me to say something, but my bottom lip started to quiver. It was much more difficult that I imagined to say goodbye to everyone.”

Of course, Season 8 isn’t the end of Jack Bauer. The finale nicely sets up the long-awaited movie version. Sutherland said he is excited about the film and promised fans plenty of thrills. “It will be two hours and not in real time, as the TV series was,” he explained. “That will free up the writers to try something new. The film’s look will be a little different from the show, but the basics won’t change. It’s going to be a bad day and Jack Bauer will find himself in the middle of it, as usual.”

Takeshi draws bicycle art

Saturday 04th December, 03:26 AM JST

TOKYO —

Comedian and prizewinning filmmaker Takeshi Kitano broke new art ground as a ‘‘bicycle painter’’ this week when he completed a colorful abstract picture in the premises of NHK in Tokyo. Kitano, also called Beat Takeshi, rode a bicycle with the paint put around the rear wheel and went around on a canvas on the ground measuring 6 by 10 meters with help from his apprentices.

‘‘Seen from above it seems quite good coming in very beautiful colors,’’ Kitano said after he put the final touch to his creation by dropping paint balloons onto it. Kitano did the painting for a program to promote Staff Benda Bilili, a band from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to take to the airwaves Jan 16.

Sakai, in memoir, says she took drugs to please her husband

Saturday 04th December, 06:42 AM JST

TOKYO —

Noriko Sakai, a one-time star singer and actress who was convicted for use of methamphetamine, confesses to taking the illegal drug to please her husband while keeping mum about her comeback in a memoir she published Friday.

In her book ‘‘Shokuzai’’ (Atonement), Sakai, 39, said she started to use the drug because her husband talked her into doing so at a time when they were having problems. She said that she though tof killing herself after he was arrested.

‘‘I don’t know what lies ahead of me,’’ Sakai said referring to the chance for a comeback to the entertainment industry. But she said, ‘‘I’ll try to find something that can please people and help others.’‘

Despite controversy, porn star Ozawa moves on with Indonesian film career

Sunday 05th December, 04:37 AM JST

JAKARTA —

Dozens of members of the militant group of Islamic Defenders Front staged a noisy protest last week in front of an Indonesian film company that just released a horror movie starring Japanese adult movie actress Maria Ozawa, who is known as ‘‘Miyabi.’‘

‘‘Reject Miyabi, the mother of all sinners, who propagates immoral behavior in this country,’’ group leader Salim Alatas shouted in front of the Maxima Pictures office in West Jakarta.

After an emotional dialogue with a company executive, the protesters grabbed all the movie posters plastered on the office walls, ripped them up and burned them.

Then the same group went to Soekarno-Hatta international airport in Jakarta and threatened to ‘‘capture’’ Ozawa upon her arrival and send her home. Police forced the crowd to a parking area in front of the airport office, far from the terminal.

Well-known in Indonesia as Miyabi, which Ozawa used early in her career as an adult video actress, she was in Jakarta to attend the premiere of her second Indonesian movie ‘‘Hantu Tanah Kusir,’’ ‘‘The Ghost of Tanah Kusir Cemetery’’ last Monday.

The film followed the success of ‘‘Menculik Miyabi,’’ ‘‘Kidnapping Miyabi,’’ a teen comedy film released last May after heated controversy delayed filming and forced scenes featuring her to be made in Tokyo instead of Jakarta.

The movies contain no sex-scenes and have been permitted to be released by an Indonesian censorship body.

In the second film, Ozawa changed her name to Pauline in an attempt to change her image within Indonesia where she has been known as a porn star.

‘‘She will continue using that name in the next two movies, based on our contracts,’’ Ody Mulya, a Maxima Pictures director, told Kyodo News.

Mulya said that by avoiding media attention, Ozawa came to Jakarta in mid-October to shoot the horror movie.

Only last week did the film company confirm Ozawa finished filming in Jakarta. It released a series of photographs of her filming in the city and surrounding areas prior to a film screening for the media.

Since then, many local media have questioned if it is ‘‘morally acceptable’’ to feature Ozawa in films for the general public.

The Republika daily has dedicated front-page stories opposing Ozawa and other adult movie actress in Indonesian horror movies, including Japanese actresses Rin Sakuragi and Leah Yuzuki and U.S. actress Tera Patrick, although the latter three have not stirred much controversy as they are not as popular as Ozawa.

‘‘A porn star creates unrest,’’ the newspaper said on its front page.

Last Tuesday, it carried large sketches of the faces of foreign porn actresses that have appeared in Indonesian movies headlined ‘‘National films on the brink of destruction.’‘

Then on Wednesday, the front-page headline called for the government to refuse entry and work permits to porn actresses.

But Mulya said he will go on with his plan for Indonesian fans to ‘‘meet and greet’’ Miyabi in movie theaters across Indonesia.

‘‘Maria Ozawa is already in Indonesia…but we cannot disclose where she is staying for security reasons. She is ready to do the promotion of her new movie in major cities. But, we have to see if it is safe,’’ Mulya said, adding the actress is wary of attacks.

Born in Hokkaido to a Japanese mother and French-Canadian father, Ozawa has appeared in adult videos since 2005 and her popularity extends overseas.

In an interview with a Jakarta-based Warta Kota daily, Ozawa said, ‘‘I met a lot of people during my recent stay in Jakarta, who welcomed and liked me.’’

Kylie Minogue to tour Japan in April

Monday 06th December, 03:03 AM JST

TOKYO —

Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue, famous for late 1980s hits like “Locomotion,” will make tour Japan next year, She will perform April 23-24 in Chiba, followed by Osaka on April 25. Minogue, 42, is remembered in Japan for an all-star performance she gave here in March, 1991, using her sex appeal to beat out Japanese “idol” singers. She was known for wearing eye-catching costumes on her world tours, including cheerleading outfits and geisha getups.

She is embarking on this tour to promote her new album, “Aphrodite,” which will kick off in Europe.

Minogue underwent surgery for breast cancer in 2005, preventing her from touring until recently. Additionally, a later 2008 tour apparently became too expensive and Japan had to be cut from the schedule. She had also planned to meet with fans in 2007 on a trip to promote her perfume brand, but that visit also never came to fruition.

In a statement to Japanese media, she said, “This is going to be a fun, exciting show.”

Matsumoto Takahiro (49) has been nominated for a whole bunch of Grammys. Well, he has to share them. The B'z guitarist, billed as Tak Matsumoto, collaborated with Larry Carlton (62) on the successful album "Take Your Pick," which has been nominated in no less than nine Grammy categories: Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Pop Instrumental Album, Best Pop Instrumental Performance, Best Rock Instrumental Performance, Best Instrumental Composition, Best Instrumental Arrangement, Best Engineered Album, Producer of the Year - Non-Classical. Carlton already has 18 Grammy nominations and three awards under his belt for his jazz guitar releases. His main style is fusion, but he's also happy to play rock or pop, and he's known for his session work with Steely Dan, Michael Jackson and others. The Grammy awards ceremony will be held in Los Angeles on February 13.

Thanks largely to the huge and loyal B'z fan base, the "Take Your Pick" Japan tour sold out 18 shows in just 20 minutes. The tour culminated in a spectacular headlining performance at the world famous Tokyo Jazz Festival in early September. The 12-track album, recorded last year and released worldwide in June, entered the Oricon charts at No. 2, a rare feat for an instrumental recording.

The Grammy nods are not the first recognition that Matsumoto has received in the U.S. In November 2007, B'z became the first Asian artists to be inducted into the Hollywood Rock Walk.
