Wenger Hits Back At Fergie Over 'Foreign Policy'

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has responded to Sir Alex Ferguson's comments on the lack of English players playing for the Gunners.

Ferguson had accused Wenger of opposing plans for having a minimum number of English players in every Premiership team simply to suit his own purposes.

However, the Arsenal managed has responded by suggesting that United were no messiahs of English football either, pointing towards some big money foreign signings.

揑f you look at the investments of Manchester United this year you抣l see they have spent a lot of money on foreign players," he said.

揑 do not know what is behind these comments from Alex Ferguson, but if I was a foreign player at Manchester United I would not be very happy if he said these things.

揃ut I抦 ready to take the blame for all the problems of English football if that is what he wants.

Alex Song may be barely 20 years-old but his starting berth at centre half against Slavia Prague tonight feels like a comeback.

It will be only the third time the Cameroonian has begun a game for Arsenal outside the Carling Cup. The last time he did that he was playing in midfield at Fulham on November 29, 2006. It was a difficult night for both players and team. He was substituted at half time as Arsenal went down 2-1.

This season, Song has been converted to central defence with some success. Impressive Carling Cup appearances against Newcastle and Sheffield United have paved the way for him to replace the injured Kolo Toure in the Czech capital.

揌e will start and it will be a big test for him,

No one expected Arsenal to put seven past Slavia Prague a fortnight ago - not even Czech football expert Karel Haring.

Before their mauling at Emirates Stadium, Slavia were described as 'better than Sparta Prague' by the Zeniksport journalist. What followed did little to prove that theory.

But despite that incredible scoreline, Haring's assessment is accurate. Slavia are streets ahead of Sparta in the Czech league and were missing a valuable ingredient - experience - when they travelled to North London. Then, of course, they played dreadfully while Arsenal were exquisite.

With Vladimir Smicer back from a two-month absence and defender Erich Brabec also available, Slavia have addressed the experience issue. With home advantage and a point to prove, Slavia can show that Haring's assessment was not wide of the mark after all.

We caught up with Haring ahead of this evening's match. Here's his take on Slavia's 7-0 defeat, the reaction in Prague, the return of Smicer and the tactics he expects Slavia to deploy tonight.

Karel, what was the reaction in Prague to the 7-0 defeat?

"I felt very embarrassed for the players because I said before that Slavia were stronger and better than Sparta and they lost 7-0! It was a big day for Slavia and they found they are far from the top level in European football. I think the players admitted that they had a poor performance. They wanted to keep it tight as long as possible but they conceded from the first shot and that changed everything. Probably the crucial goal was the third after mistake from Daniel Pudil and Martin and Vaniak. At half time the coach wanted them to play the rest of the game with a three-goal difference but that plan failed too."

The Slavia support was excellent despite the result, wasn't it?

"The Slavia fans behaved very well, for them it was a big event to be in Emirates Stadium. What is funny is that Slavia have very poor support in their home league games. For example on Saturday they played against Teplice, a game between the top two in the Czech league, but only 5,000 turned up. There is a big difference when you consider 2,000 went to London and only 5,000 come to their home stadium."

Who impressed you in the Arsenal team?

"Cesc Fabregas, as always, and I mentioned him before the game. Theo Walcott also played a very impressive game and so did Alexander Hleb."

How much did the defeat prey on Slavia's minds?

"The coach decided to change the goalkeeper for the last two games after the 7-0 game. On the other hand they drew at Liberec and beat Teplice so it didn't damage them as much as I expected."

Do Slavia have a point to prove tonight?

"They definitely have a point to prove. For them it is very important that an experienced defender, Erich Brabec, is back. Of course one man cannot resolve all the problems but for them he is an important man. I expect they will play really more careful because if you look at the line-up for the Arsenal game I think there were eight offensive players and I think that was a mistake."

Do you expect them to be more cautious this time?

"It is difficult to say how they will play this time because Stanislav Vlcek is out with an injury. I expect they will play with two forwards, Zdenek Senkerik and maybe Milan Ivana, who can play as an attacker too."

Is Vladimir Smicer missed the Emirates game. Is he fit to play?

"Smicer is fit but I am not sure if he can play the whole game. He was a substitute in the last league game and he was going to play but Vlcek suffered an injury after 17 minutes so the coach had to put another striker on the pitch instead. But he will be ready for Wednesday night and he will bring more experience to the Slavia team. The only question is his form because he was out for two months so he lacks match practice. When you consider his first game is a very difficult game against Arsenal, he will probably only play one half or 60 minutes."

Is it vital for Slavia that they don't concede an early goal?

"It will be the basic task for Slavia to avoid conceding the first goal. They will be happy with a draw because they don't think about going through the group stage, they fight with Steaua Bucharest for third place and a place in the Uefa Cup."

How about a prediction?

"I really don't want to make a prediction after last time! I expect Arsenal to play the same way as they did at Sparta Prague's stadium, they will be patient and wait for their chance. I think Arsenal will win, maybe by one or two goals. I don't think there will be a big surprise."

Ars鑞e Wenger is well aware of the strain on his squad over the next couple of months but he is NOT in favour of a winter break.

The Arsenal manager left Cesc Fabregas and Alex Hleb back in London when the Club left for tonight抯 Champions League tie at Slavia Prague. Wenger knows his side only need a point to qualify from Group H and yet, after the international break, they face a spell of 13 games in six weeks.

It is a hectic timetable in which Arsenal will be fighting for trophies on four fronts. But despite that, Wenger would not want to follow the Continental model of a winter recess.

揂t the moment there is still a reasonable break in the summer,

Ars鑞e Wenger believes quotas on foreign players are a thing of the past.

The issue has hit the headlines again after Fifa president Sepp Blatter proposed starting XIs be restricted to just five overseas stars in order to nurture home-grown talent. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has lent his support to the idea.

However Wenger argues that the global nature of modern football has made such restrictions obsolete and, crucially, he suggests the influx of foreign players raises

The Champions League education of Theo Walcott will continue tonight and, once again, a match against Slavia Prague will be his classroom.

The 18-year-old taught the Czech League leaders a painful lesson at Emirates Stadium a fortnight ago with two goals in that 7-0 demolition. It was his first European start and he was paired up front with Emmanuel Adebayor. The Togolese striker was impressed with what he saw.

"We all know that Theo is a good player and we all trust him as well,
