Gallas: Arsenal's Captain Fantastic?
Goal.com's Jamie Obertelli considers the impact that a former Chelsea man is having on Arsenal this season...
So much has changed at Arsenal since last season that it is difficult to single out any one factor that has led to the Gunners re-emerging as domestic title challengers and a consistent force in Europe. Certainly the unity and the togetherness in the squad is as strong as it has ever been, thanks largely to one man, William Gallas.
Eyebrows were raised when Wenger handed the former Chelsea man the captaincy ahead of Gilberto, after an injury-plagued start to life at Arsenal and some ill-timed outbursts in the press failed to endear the Frenchman to the fans.
When given the armband last season, Gilberto performed admirably in Thierry Henry's absence, the silent captain led by example and helped his side eventually finish with a Champions League spot. But Wenger's troops seem to have their sights set on bigger things this term, and just as the captaincy seemed to inhibit the departed Henry, it has had the opposite effect on his successor.
Gone are the rants that appeared in the press when Arsenal failed to live up to expectations, and while many will argue the Gunners have yet to face a rough patch, Gallas' influence is clear. The former Chelsea man's public criticisms have given way to inspirational talk and displays of passion and leadership that have quickly warmed fans to the defender.
Gallas' injury record has also improved drastically since his first season with the Gunners. Unable to string two performances together last term, internet discussion boards were awash with negative comments from cynical supporters, one fan joking that Gallas would be out of action for two months with a paper-cut.
With Gallas finally moving to North London and admittedly 'settling down' off the pitch, Arsenal fans are now seeing the defender at his best. Gallas' influence on the pitch is as vital now as it has become off it, with crucial goals helping keep his side unbeaten.
His equalizer at the death against Manchester United was his most important contribution on the pitch so far.
Fans only need to look at the Youtube video of Arsenal's Cross Bar Challenge to see the influence the new captain has on the team and the regard he is held in by his peers. With the players looking like a really tight-knit unit and playing some inspirational football, Gallas' post-match huddles, player lunches and on-field leadership seem to have done the trick.

Arsenal Eleven To Face Sevilla...
The squad that has travelled to Spain for tonight’s game against Sevilla has been named:
1. Jens Lehmann
3. Bacary Sagna
4. Cesc Fabregas
5. Kolo Toure
6. Philippe Senderos
7. Tomas Rosicky
8. Lassana Diarra
9. Eduardo
15. Denilson
16. Mathieu Flamini
17. Alex Song
19. Gilberto
24. Manuel Almunia
26. Nicklas Bendtner
27. Emmanuel Eboue
30. Armand Traore
31. Justin Hoyte
32. Theo Walcott
The most likely team in my opinion is as follows:
GK-Almunia
RB-Sagna
CB-Toure
CB-Senderos
LB-Hoyte/Traore
RM-Eboue
CM-Fabregas
CM-Gilberto/Diarra
LM-Rosicky
CF-Eduardo/Walcott
CF-Bendtner
Bendtner is a definite to start...Flamini won't start according to Wenger even though he wanted him to...and I think Eduardo may get the nod up front if Wenger plays 4-4-2. He may go with 5 in midfield with a central 3 of Fabregas, Gilberto and Diarra or Denilson. He could also play Walcott up front but I think Wenger may want to give Eduardo a go up front in the champions league which probably suits him better for the moment since he is still apparently "settling in".
We have already qualified but Sevilla will want to get revenge for our 3-0 victory at home. It may be a good chance for us to see the likes of Traore, Diarra, Denilson, Bendtner. Bendtner did well against Wigan when he came on so let’s hope he can have a positive impact tonight. I would like to see him played with another striker rather than be stranded up front on his own, even though he is very strong as a lone striker. Eduardo or Walcott may like to play just off him so it could be interesting.
However, I think the fact that we are away AND we have already qualified....gives Sevilla a slight advantage. Sevilla are the bookies favourites but without jinxing it...My personal feeling is not the same. Other interesting matches today include Lyon vs. Barcelona and Stuttgart vs. Rangers who still have a chance of getting through to the next stage.
