Manchester United will not pursue move for CSKA Moscow goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev
Sir Alex Ferguson has ruled out a move for CSKA Moscow goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev, despite growing speculation linking Manchester United with the Russia No 1.
Akinfeev, 23, delivered a stunning performance against Manchester United on Tuesday night as Leonid Slutski’s team emerged from Old Trafford with a 3-3 Champions League draw following Antonio Valencia’s deflected injury-time equaliser for the Premier League team.
CSKA officials admitted last month that they are fighting a losing battle to hold onto Akinfeev when the transfer window opens in January.
And United have been strongly linked with a move, with Akinfeev himself admitting following United’s 1-0 win in Moscow in October that he would relish a transfer to Old Trafford.
Ferguson is facing a crucial decision on the goalkeeping situation at United with first-choice Edwin van der Sar celebrating his 39th birthday last week.
Neither Ben Foster nor Tomasz Kuszczak have convinced while deputising for the Dutch veteran, but Ferguson insists that his confidence in the pair of them ensures he will not pursue a move for Akinfeev.
Ferguson said: "It is only rumour. We are not showing any interest in him (Akinfeev).
“We are happy with our goalkeeping situation at the moment and wouldn't be looking for another one.
“We wouldn’t be interested, but I have to say he is a fantastic goalkeeper.
“He is athletic, with a powerful build, and his distribution his good.
“He really saved CSKA from a big defeat against us. He made one very good save in the first half and four I think in the second half. He was outstanding.”
United travel to Chelsea on Sunday with Ryan Giggs, Dimitar Berbatov and Nemanja Vidic all set to return from injury at Stamford Bridge.
Captain Gary Neville will serve the second game of a domestic three-match ban, however, and Ferguson admits that the suspension is coming just as the 34 year-old appears to be returning to the form he displayed prior to his 18-month injury lay-off.
Ferguson said: “Against CSKA, Gary Neville was fantastic with his crosses.
“It was Gary Neville at his very peak. He was unbelievable and put in so many crosses. It was the sort of show that made you think of him at his absolute peak.”

- I think he's a great GK, but I do think that this should kill everyone's hopes of him going to United. |

Martin Atkinson to referee Chelsea vs Manchester United clash
Martin Atkinson, subject of past criticisms from Sir Alex Ferguson, will referee Manchester United’s Premier League trip to Chelsea on Sunday.
Ferguson has admitted a charge of improper conduct for his comments on referee Alan Wiley’s fitness recently and could face a fine or a touchline ban from the Football Association.
In March 2008, the manager was given a severe warning by the FA after criticizing Atkinson and the Premier League head of referees, Keith Hackett, after United lost 1-0 to Portsmouth.
Ferguson was furious after Atkinson failed to award his side a penalty, but gave Portsmouth one and sent off United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak. Ferguson accused Hackett of failing to take action against underperforming officials.

Fletcher to battle until summer with ankle injury

Darren Fletcher is only just back from an injury lay-off, but the Manchester United midfielder is already planning for a summer operation to cure an ankle problem.
The Scotland international has had to play with the aid of a pain-killing injection to ease the problem, something he will have to live with for the rest of the season if he is to avoid another lay-off.
The 25-year-old, who has returned from a month on the sidelines, revealed: "A bit of bone has broken off the back of my ankle and stuck out about an inch. Every time I bend it is causing a bit of pain so I have had an injection to clear it up for a while.
"It should be okay to the end of the season but the plan is to get me through to the summer and then do something then.
"I have had it for a couple of years now and the build-up of fluid and other medical things the doctors know more about than me has been constantly aggravating it. Striking a ball or bending the ankle in a flexed position or pushing off it hurts.
"It got to the point where it was too sore to train and play. Something had to be done and I had the injection.''

Neville: Changes weaken defence
Gary Neville has claimed Manchester United's defensive frailties can be explained away by their constant changes of personnel.
After last season's record-breaking feats, when they kept 14 successive Premier League clean sheets, United have been strangely vulnerable this term.
Tuesday's six-goal Champions League thriller with CSKA Moscow was the second time they have conceded three goals in a game, while their seven shut-outs in all competitions this term represents less than a 50% success rate in keeping the opposition out.
Neville accepts there is an issue to address. But he is convinced once Sir Alex Ferguson is able to select a settled back-four again, normal service will be resumed.
"We are interchanging the defence too regularly at the moment because of injuries and it has caused us a problem," he said.
"We had to change our keeper for the opening two months of the season, then Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have been injured. Before that it was Wes Brown.
"It means more changes than the manager would like.
"He wants a consistent back four, which is what we have had for two or three seasons.
"We definitely want to improve defensively and once we settle into our stride I am sure we will become better."
Neville did not do much to help the situation when he was sent off in the Carling Cup win at Barnsley last week.
It earned the United skipper a three-match domestic ban which rules him out of Sunday's eagerly-awaited showdown with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
John O'Shea is almost certain to step in, although Ferdinand is again set to be on the sidelines with a continuing calf problem, even if Nemanja Vidic has recovered from a similar injury.
As Patrice Evra will also return to the starting line-up in place of Fabio, whose defensive discipline let him down against CSKA in midweek, it means three-fifths of United's defence will have changed in the space of five days, just highlighting the point Neville is making.
Not that the veteran full-back, who has been tipped for an England recall for next week's friendly with Brazil in Qatar, believes there is any basis for the emergence of so many doom-merchants recently.
"Things are not too bad here," he reflected.
"We are through to the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup, we are two points off the top of the league - which is probably the best start we have had in years - and we are through to the knock-out phase of the Champions League with two matches to spare.
"It is always the same at this club. When you lose a game at Liverpool there is criticism afterwards.
"But we have beaten Arsenal at home, we have beaten City at home. We have had other good results. We are not concerned by anything that happens externally."
Ferguson has already identified Chelsea as the main threat to United's bid to land an unprecedented fourth consecutive league title.
Neville is not willing to make such a quick judgement. He is aware Arsenal will draw level with the Old Trafford outfit if they win their game in hand.
In addition, big-spending Manchester City are not that far behind, while he remains wary of old rivals Liverpool, despite their current turmoil.
"It is too early to say where the biggest threats are going to come from," he said.
"At the moment Chelsea are the team on top, so they are the ones we are all going for.
"But there are three or four up there who are capable of putting challenges together."
What Neville does accept is that results between the major contenders can have a significant effect, even if United landed a record-equalling 18th league championship last term despite winning just once against the established 'big four'.
"These matches are always key," he said.
"It is a big game between two big clubs. Both teams will want to win, but both also know it will be just as difficult as ever.
"No matter what happens though, there is still a long way to go."
