Premier League - Thaksin to wait on Sven decision
Eurosport - Wed, 16 Apr 18:06:00 2008
ThaksinShinawatra is disappointed with Manchester's City's recent slump inform, and will consider manager Sven-Goran Eriksson's future in thesummer.

"I'm not happy with the performance of the club in the secondhalf of the season," he said. "We will look at it at the end of theseason and assess the club and the people involved."
City'sbillionaire owner denied reports linking the club with a move forPortugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, but admitted wholesale changes werenecessary to usher in success.
"We'll probably have to sellsome players and buy some new ones," he said. "We need some defenders,midfielders...midfielders are the key. We have some good players but weneed more."
Following an impressive start to the campaign, which saw City rise as high as second in the table, Eriksson's sidehave fallen outside the European qualification places and struggled toreproduce the flowing football that marked his arrival at the club.
IfCity remain in eighth position, however, the club will equal their bestPremier League finish - achieved in the 2004/05 season.

Ridgewell wants Zarate to stay
Birmingham City's Liam Ridgewell believes Mauro Zarate will benefit from extending his stay at the club.
Blues manager Alex McLeish wants to keep Zarate - on loan from Al-Sadd - for at least another 12 months and acknowledges he will face competition for the services of the Argentinian at the end of the current campaign.
And Ridgewell feels the 21-year-old would reap the rewards of playing regularly with City rather than being a fringe player at a leading club.
Zarate showed his quality when coming off the substitutes' bench to score a stunning free-kick equaliser in the 1-1 draw with Everton to take his goal tally to four in four matches.
Ridgewell said: "I think we have got a couple of goal-of-the-season contenders, Sebastian Larsson's goal at Spurs could win it but for Mauro to come off the bench and score a goal like that was excellent.
"Coming off the bench he has been doing really well. He got his couple of starts against Reading and Manchester City and did really well. Hopefully he can keep banging in the goals towards the end of the season.
"Mauro is definitely doing everything possible to try and convince the club to keep him. He is showing what he can do. I hope he can stop here. He is a great player and we'd like to keep him.
"You can see when a great player is emerging. He has got a good touch and good skill and I am sure he will get even better.
"I think if he stays another year he would benefit from playing regular football. People like myself, and other people who have come to Birmingham, get better by doing that." |

Big Sam linked with Benfica job
By Gordon Sharrock
Comment
SAM Allardyce could be on his way back into management with Portuguese giants Benfica.
Reports in Lisbon last night tipped the former Wanderers manager as a possible successor to Jose Antonio Camacho, who quit last month.
Manchester City manager, Sven Goran Eriksson, who has twice managed the Eagles and whose future at Eastlands has been thrown into doubt by owner Thaksin Shinawatra, has also been touted as a target, along with current Chelsea manager, Avram Grant, and the Sampdoria coach Walter Mazzarri also in the frame, according to the Portuguese media.

Fernando Chalana is currently in charge at the Stadium of Light but the Benfica hierarchy are keen to appoint a foreign head coach for next season.
Allardyce, who quit Wanderers a year ago after seven and a half years at the Reebok, has been out of management since leaving Newcastle in January. |

Leeds earn place in playoffs
LONDON: Fallen giants Leeds United booked their place in the third tier Division Three playoffs on Friday with a 1-0 win at Yeovil.
Dougie Freedman scored the only goal of the game and the visitors held on despite having Alan Sheehan sent off for a crude challenge on Lee Peltier in the 64th minute at Huish Park.
Leeds started the season with a 15-point deduction which league authorities imposed over the club抯 handling of its bankruptcy last year but have sought a court ruling via an arbitration panel comprised of a Court of Appeal judge, a club representative and one from the league.
Leeds went into administration last May once it became clear that they were going to be relegated from Division Two and chairman Ken Bates then bought the club back from the administrators in August.
The League ruled the move constituted a serious breach of its rules governing the insolvency of clubs and that Leeds should start the season with a 15-point deficit.
Leeds, Champions League semi-finalists only eight years ago, would be on track for automatic promotion were it not for the points reduction. |
