FC Barcelona must gamble at Liverpool

LONDON (AP) - It looks like the brilliant strikeforce that helped FC Barcelona win the Champions League last season must keep it alive this week.

Although striker Samuel Eto'o is nowhere near full-match sharpness after five months out through a knee injury, he looks set to team up with Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi for an attack-minded Barca needing to overturn a 2-1 first-leg deficit at Liverpool.

Without giving his lineup or tactics away, coach Frank Rijkaard knows he has to gamble after losing the first leg at home.

"The lesson we need to learn for Anfield is that we can't relax or stop being forceful. In other words, we have to fight like never before," Rijkaard said. "There's no time to think about it too much. We know what's waiting for us at Liverpool."

Of the 16 teams trying to make it to the quarterfinals, defending champion Barcelona is in the worst position after its home defeat. Even a 1-0 victory isn't enough on Tuesday.

A glance at the first-leg results suggests Liverpool and Manchester United have a great chance to reach the last eight having won their away legs. United won 1-0 at Lille thanks to a quickly taken free kick by Ryan Giggs that the French club is still complaining about.

Rijkaard rocket for Rafa

Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard has hit out at Rafa Benitez, branding the Liverpool boss ignorant ahead of the sides' Champions League game. Benitez attempted to predict the Catalan side's formation for the last 16 second leg game at Anfield, bringing a scathing response from Rijkaard.

"I think it is great to play against a team whose manager knows everything. But you know what they say - people who say they know everything are often the ones who know the least," he said.

The Camp Nou side must score at least twice to have any chance of going through after suffering a shock 2-1 defeat in the home leg last fortnight.

The Liverpool manager had said that Bar鏰 would employ an attacking 3-4-3 formation, removing a defender and starting with Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi up front.

Champions League: Holders dumped out

Liverpool reached the Champions League quarter-finals as Barcelona lost their European crown on a thrilling night at Anfield.

The holders threw everything they could muster at Liverpool's defiant ranks, under siege for much of the second period, and even a goal from Eidur Gudjohnsen with 15 minutes left could not break the resolve of the hosts.

Liverpool's 2-1 victory Liverpool achieved in the first leg a fortnight ago was too much for Barcelona, who were unable to become the first side in 11 years to lose a home first leg and still win a Champions League tie.
