Fergie blasts flawless United
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson accused his players of lacking composure despite watching his side claim a third successive Premiership victory.
Ferguson had harsh words after United failed to finish off newly-promoted Watford at Vicarage Road, eventually running out 2-1 winners thanks to goals from Mickael Silvestre and Ryan Giggs.
"Watford make it a real battle for you," Ferguson said. "But when we had chances to counter-attack, we should have kept the ball better.
"We're normally good at that, but that quality deserted us in these moments. It really needed someone to put their foot on the ball and enjoy passing the ball, but I don't think they did that today."
His words are an implicit criticism of Michael Carrick who had a solid if unspectacular afternoon making his first start since his 27m euro (£18.6m) move from Tottenham. The England midfielder was taken off 15 minutes from time and replaced by Kieran Richardson.
United dominated the first half and went in front through Silvestre, but the French defender was caught out on 34 minutes by Ashley Young who set up a simple equaliser for Damien Francis.
The visitors went back in front through Ryan Giggs in the 52nd minute but not before Darius Henderson had missed a wonderful chance to give Watford the lead.
Despite some shaky moments at the back, Ferguson praised his side's fighting qualities, telling MUTV: "You saw another side to us today. We realise we had to battle to win the points, and the players can take credit for that.
"We came to a difficult place, showed our mettle and got our rewards from it. The younger players are improving in the physical and mental side of the game."
United are already without first-choice full-backs Gary Neville and Gabriel Heinze, and could lose centre-back Rio Ferdinand to a suspected broken toe. If confirmed, the injury could keep Ferdinand out of England's forthcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers against Andorra and Macedonia.
