Vettel: Lots of grip loss due to restrictions

Sebastian Vettel returned to driving duties on Thursday, managing the third fastest time as testing continued. The World Champion, whose best effort was 1:19.297, was just a tenth slower than team-mate Mark Webber’s personal best of 24 hours earlier.

“It’s been two months since we were in the car, so it does take a couple of laps to get back in the rhythm, but the car feels fine and as we expected,” the German reported in Jerez.

“There’s quite a loss of grip due to the regulation changes, but you get used to it quickly and then start to explore how the new car feels. So far we can be happy - we had a couple of issues, but that’s normal when the car is new.”

For 2012, the exhaust-blown diffuser concept (pioneered by Red Bull at the start of 2010) has been outlawed, meaning cars will slide around more at the rear.

'Renault engines offer fuel advantage'

Renault Sport F1, the engine supplier of Lotus (formely a fully-fledged works team), Reigning World Champions Red Bull, Williams and Caterham, argue that its 2012 powerplants will hold a fuel and driveability advantage over the rest of the field.

With the act of re-fuelling being banned from 2010, a battle has been taking place to balance fuel usage and on-track performance. During the past two years the fine line between too much and not enough fuel has been difficult to decifer, but Renault says the teams it provides can race with a lower fuel load than its closest rivals.

"The Mercedes engine is about 15 horsepower more powerful than ours," Jean François Caubet, Director of Renault F1 Sport, told Spain's AS. "The Ferrari also offers more power, but in terms of driveability and fuel economy the Renault engine is in front."

When discussing race advantage, Caubet explained that Renault-powered cars can line-up on the grid with 15 to 18 litres (approximately 20-24km) less fuel than its rivals.

"Red Bull can start races with 15 to 18 litres less petrol in the tank compared to the competition,'' he added of the crucial weight saving. "That makes the difference."

Mileage update: Lotus leads the way

It was Lotus which racked up the most mileage at Formula 1’s first pre-season test of the year in Jerez last week. After a difficult first day saw Pastor Maldonado suffer a series of technical problems, he and Bruno Senna put the hammer down to bring Williams up into second place for mileage over the four days.

Mercedes came in for the fourth highest lap numbers, although the Brackley squad was running with its 2011 car. The highest-placed big guns with a 2012 car are McLaren in sixth spot. However, following two strong opening days, Force India tumbled down the order as they only managed two tours of the track before Jules Bianchi’s shunt on Thursday morning.

The current mileage table is as follows:

1. Lotus 404 laps / 1,788.9 km / 1111.4 mi
- ran on all four days

2. Williams 372 laps / 1,647.2 km / 1,023.4 mi
- ran on all four days

3. Caterham 358 laps / 1585.2 km / 984.8 mi
- ran for all four days

4. Mercedes 348 laps / 1,540.9 km / 957.4 mi
- ran on three days with 2011 car

5. Toro Rosso 316 laps / 1,399.3 km / 869.3 mi
- ran on all four days

6. McLaren 313 laps / 1,385.9 km / 861.1 mi
- ran on all four days

7. Sauber 299 laps / 1,323.9 km / 822.5 mi
- ran for all four days

8. Red Bull 297 laps / 1,315.1 km / 817.1 mi
- ran for all four days

9. Ferrari 268 laps / 1,186.7 km / 737.3 mi
- ran for all four days

10. Force India 209 laps / 929.5 km / 574.9 mi
- lost one day when Bianchi crashed

11. HRT 108 laps / 478.2 km / 297.1 mi
- ran on two days with 2011 car

12. Marussia
- did not attend

Testing continues at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya on Tuesday 21 February and can again be tracked through the GPUpdate.net Live Test Report

'No team orders' at Red Bull - Mateschitz

Team owner Dietrich Mateschitz has promised there will be no team orders at Red Bull this season and sees no reason why Mark Webber can't challenge Sebastian Vettel this year.

After a close battle in 2010, Vettel dominated the 2011 season with 11 victories to Webber's one. There were signs of team orders when Webber was told not to attack Vettel towards the end of the British Grand Prix, but he ignored the radio call regardless.

Red Bull boss Mateschitz said neither driver would be favoured this year.

"Our attitude has not changed - there are no team orders," he told Kleine Zeitung newspaper. "It starts at zero again, for both of them."

As for which Red Bull driver will get the upper hand in 2012, Mateschitz is open minded.

"From today's point of view it is difficult to say. But why not [Webber]? I'm curious to know how hard or difficult or impossible it will be for Vettel to defend his dominance."

Based on the initial Jerez test, however, he said it is too early to say if the RB8 will be as dominant as last year.

"These tests are not to scale," said Mateschitz. "Everyone drives with their own goals and plans or to meet certain criteria. But I do think the balance of power has stayed about the same."

Pirelli confirms compounds for first three races

Pirelli has announced which Slick tyre compounds will be taken to the opening trio of 2012 Formula 1 races in Australia, Malaysia and China. For the Milan company’s second year back in the sport, all compounds have been modified and the firm expects at least two pit-stops per car, per race.

For Rounds 1 and 3 in Melbourne and Shanghai, the Medium (white) and Soft (yellow) compounds will be in use, whereas Hard (silver) and Medium (white) will be taken to Kuala Lumpur for the second event of the season. Once again, the harder compound of a weekend is known as ‘Prime’, with ‘Option’ being the softer of the two.

Under normal circumstances, each driver will be allocated six sets of Primes and five of Options per weekend. New for 2012 is Cinturato branding – the label on Pirelli’s first F1 tyres of the 1950s – for the Wet (blue) and Intermediate (green) compounds.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Tyre selections for Rounds 1-3:

Australia Soft (yellow) and Medium (white)
Malaysia Medium (white) and Hard (silver)
China Soft (yellow) and Medium (white)
-----------------------------------------------------------------

In 2011, the Soft and Hard compounds were used for the first four races.
