Religion across the United States is worth more than Apple, Google and Amazon combined, a new study has shown.
Researchers from Georgetown University and the Newseum Institute in Washington, DC, calculated how much money religion generates each year in the country.
They provided three different estimates. The mid-range number puts the annual value of America's faith economy at $1.2trillion.
This estimate takes into account revenue from faith-based organizations, such as schools and hospitals, as well as the goods and services they provide.

It also included the annual revenues of 27 companies classified in the study as 'religion-based', such as Chick-Fil-A, Forever 21 and Tyson Foods.
A first estimate in the study looked only at revenues of faith-based organizations. These included educational institutions, health care providers, congregations, charities, media (including book sales) and food.
The study looked at revenue generated by sales of kosher and halal food but didn't factor in food sold for specific holidays such as Christmas.
These, according to the authors, would have had a 'dramatic impact' on the results.
This first estimate found that religion generated $378billion in revenue annually. That number already topples the combined revenues of Apple and Microsoft for the past fiscal year, which came close to $320billion for the past tax year.
But the second estimate found that religion across the United States generated much more money, with an annual revenue of $1.2trillion.
This estimate went into more detail in the contributions of more than 340,000 congregations around the United States. These contributions employ pastors, music directors, and other types of paid employees.

It also took into account the revenues of what the study referred to as 'religion-based companies'. Authors relied on two news stories to establish a list of businesses defined as having strong religious roots.
Among the businesses listed in the study are Chick-Fil-A, which closes on Sundays to enable its employees to worship if they want to, Forever 21, which has printed a Bible verse under its plastic bags, and Tyson Foods, which employs more than 115 chaplains for staff members and their families.
The $ 1.2trillion estimate means religion in the United States generates more money per year than Google, Amazon and Apple combined.
The three companies' revenues for the past fiscal years come at $74, $107 and $230billion respectively, for a total of $411billion - far behind the study's $1.2trillion.
A third estimate took into account the revenues of religiously affiliated Americans. It found the value of faith in the United States, calculated this way, reached $4.8trillion annually.

'We believe that our second estimate of $1.2trillion is a more reasonable estimate because it takes into account both the value of the services provided by religious organizations and the impact religion has on a number of important American businesses,' co-authors Brian and Melissa Grim, who are father and daughter according to the Washington Post, wrote.
They acknowledged that the study did not take into account the physical or financial assets owned by religious groups, nor did it include the 'negative impacts that occur in some religious communities such as the abuse of children by some clergy, cases of fraud, and the possibility of being recruitment sites for violent extremism'.
But they concluded clearly that religion is 'a highly significant sector of the American economy'.
'Religion provides purpose-driven institutional and economic contributions to health, education, social cohesion, social services, media, food and business itself,' the co-authors wrote.
'Perhaps most significantly, religion helps set Americans free to do good by harnessing the power of millions of volunteers from nearly 345,000 diverse congregations present in every corner of the country’s urban and rural landscape.'
