Dip the fly in your food

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 71, Number 673:

Abu Hurayra said; the Messenger of God said; "If a fly falls in your drink, you should immerse it completely in the drink, because in one of the wings is the disease and in the other wing is the healing."

What a great medical advice to establish perfect hygiene!

Hmmm interesting ...

Working on the theory that flies must have remarkable antimicrobial defences to survive rotting dung, meat and fruit, the team at the Department of Biological Sciences, Macquarie University, set out to identify those antibacterial properties manifesting at different stages of a fly's development....

....
The antibiotic material is extracted by drowning the flies in ethanol, then running the mixture through a filter to obtain the crude extract.
When this was placed in a solution with various bacteria including  E.coli, Golden Staph, Candida (a yeast) and a common hospital pathogen, antibiotic action was observed every time.
ABC Science

In this study 4 flies of (Musca domestica) species were collected to investigate the antibacterial and
antifungal activity of their wings. The obtained result showed that all media cultivated with right wing extract
were  free  of  bacterial  and  fungal  growth  however  the  bacterial  and  fungal  growth  for  the  left  wing  were
observed.  It  could  be  concluded  that  the  right  fly  wing  is  considered  as  new  revolution  of  antibiotic
recommended for further researches to find more antibiotics from right fly wing.

Evidence exists that larvae have been used for the last thousand years by various ancient cultures, such as the aboriginal Ngemba tribe of New South Wales,7 the Hill people of Northern Myanma (Burma)8 and the Mayan healers of Central America.9 Anthropological research suggests that the Maya soaked dressings in the blood of cattle and exposed them to the sun before applying them to certain lesions, expecting the dressings to squirm with maggots.7

Saudi Arabia Invites Iran to Discuss Upcoming Hajj
News ID: 1282717 Service: Society/Culture
December, 30, 2016 - 16:39

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Saudi Arabia has invited Iran to discuss a return of its nationals to next year's hajj after Iranians were excluded from the pilgrimage following a major diplomatic row, reports said Friday.

The Al-Hayat daily reported that Riyadh's pilgrims minister Mohammed Bentin had opened discussions with more than 80 countries, including Iran, to work out the details of the 2017 hajj.

"Iran's hajj delegation was invited to come to the kingdom" for preparations, the paper said, AFP reported.

The Arab News daily said Riyadh would welcome pilgrims for hajj and the smaller umra rite "irrespective of their nationalities or sectarian affiliations, including Iranian pilgrims".

More than 1.8 million faithful took part in this year's hajj, but Iranians stayed at home after tensions between Riyadh and Tehran boiled over following a deadly stampede during the 2015 pilgrimage.

On September 24 last year, thousands of people lost their lives in a deadly crush after Saudi authorities blocked a road in Mina during a ritual, forcing large crowds of pilgrims to collide.

The crush was the deadliest incident in the history of the pilgrimage. According to an Associated Press count based on official statements from the 36 countries that lost citizens in the disaster, more than 2,400 pilgrims were killed in the incident.

Saudi Arabia claims nearly 770 people were killed in the incident, but officials at Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization say about 4,700 people, including over 460 Iranian pilgrims, lost their lives.

2. Cataract surgery in ancient cultures: “Couching” technique
The oldest documented case of cataract throughout history was reported in a famous and
small statue from the 5th dynasty (about 2457-2467 B.C.)
contained in the Egyptian Museum in
Cairo, Egypt. This statue, discovered in 1860 in Saqqāra, dates from the Old Kingdom and
represents a male figure, the priest reader Ka-āper, also called Cheikh el-Beled (Figure 1A).
We found an obvious white pupillary reflex in the left eye (Figure 1B). This finding, in an
aged man, probably indicates a mature cataract; moreover, it does not appear in the right
eye. We suggested that the author carefully inspected a man with cataract and accurately
reproduced the physical sign in wood (Ascaso & Cristóbal, 2001). This fact confirms that old
Egyptian knew the disease. By analysis of ancient surgical instruments it is possible to
define the history of medical specialties, and acquaint the evolution of specific surgical
techniques and operations through the centuries (Aruta et al., 2009). Scientists have often
discussed whether cataract was firstly operated in Ancient Egypt (Bernscherer, 2001). This
hypothesis seems plausible (Ascaso et al., 2009). Thus, a wall painting in the tomb of the
master builder Ipwy at Thebes (about 1200 B.C.) reveals an oculist treating the eye of a
craftsman. Because of the length of the instrument, the scene might also be interpreted as a
cataract surgery by couching of the lens into the vitreous cavity (Figure 2).
