A Chinese father tried to sell his infant son in order to buy a car for his wife.
The man wanted to divorce his wife, and his wife said he must buy her a car for her to agree to the divorce.
The father was caught on camera holding his five-month-old baby in freezing weather on the street of Linyi city in eastern China as he waited for a potential buyer, reported Huanqiu, publication affiliated to People's Daily Online.
Police have detained the man who agreed to sell his child for 80,000 yuan to a stranger whom he had met on the internet.
The suspect, surnamed Zhang, was seen waiting at the intersection of Jinyi Road and Linyi San Road on the morning of January 12, a video posted by iqilu.com shows.
Zhang was nervous. He looked around for the buyer for more than 10 minutes.
The infant was not wearing enough clothes and started to cry in cold weather.
Police officers on patrol spotted the man and found him suspicious.
Worrying that the man would harm the infant, they brought the man to the police station.
After interrogation, Zhang confessed that he had put his son up for sale online.
A buyer had agreed to pay 70,000 yuan for the boy, and said he would meet the father at the intersection on that day.
Zhang told police that he had wanted to divorce his wife. His wife agreed to the divorce but demanded for a car, so the man planned to sell their baby in order to afford a car.
The man explained that he also hoped to find the child a good home before getting divorced. He said: 'It is difficult to break up when you have a child.'
Zhang had been detained for human trafficking. Police are investigating into the case further.
Hundreds of web users discussed the incident on Weibo, China's microblogging platform. Many condemned the father's cruel behaviour.
One user said: 'The boy has such a father. Even though the boy's saved this time, he would probably be sold next time.'
Another user wondered: 'You have only contributed a sperm. Why do you think you are in a position to sell the boy?'
A third user condemned: 'He wears a lot clothes while he didn't put enough clothes on the baby.'
