Call Me By Your Name’s Armie Hammer isn’t interested in an Oscar win: ‘It’s not my thing’
Armie Hammer’s forthcoming movie Call Me By Your Name is already being touted for Academy Awards glory – but an Oscar win couldn’t be further from the humble actor’s radar.
It debuted at Sundance Film Festival in January to rave reviews, even scoring a rare 100% rating on infamously harsh film review site Rotten Tomatoes. And all of this high praise means it’s been thrown into the Oscars rumourmill.
So when we caught up with the Social Network star to see how he’s feeling with his name being thrown into the Oscars pool, he was refreshingly aloof and told us that winning an Oscar is not why he makes films, admitting the self-publicity required for a win is just not his ‘thing’.
‘I know how much work that takes and I know the kind of work you have to do to be nominated and win and Academy Award – it’s a lot of going around and talking about yourself and campaigning and all of that,’ Armie explained to us.
‘That’s not why I got I got this business. That’s not why I make films. So it’s not even anything that’s on my radar for now. That being said, would I love for Luca [Guadagnino, director] to get nominated? Or the film – and I truly believe he deserves it – then absolutely. I would do whatever it takes. But trying to be selfish about it, it’s not my thing.’
Explaining his stance further, the 30-year-old actor and dad-of-two also feels he’s too young to scoop such a title.
‘I don’t need an Academy Award or an Academy Award nomination when I’m 30 yeas old,’ he added. ‘I don’t feel I’ve honestly earned it yet. I still feel like I have a lot to learn about being an actor and getting better at that and it’s something I’m working on and trying to improve.
‘If you give someone an Academy Award at a young age, where do you go from there? What becomes your goal then?’
Luckily, it seems Armie has been ‘too busy’ to even think about the buzz the movie is getting, having just finished promotional work for his new movie Cars 3, which is out in cinemas now.
‘Fortunately I’ve been so busy since we made it and I haven’t really had time to think about it,’ Armie added.
‘When you make a movie like this, it’s a passion project for everybody involved. It’s not a huge budget, it’s not something that you’re doing to make money. It’s because you believe in the project and you believe in the people who are working on it.
