- K! ONLINE

Cops smash ‘Geng Subuh’ preying on worshippers
@kakiselit
YAN: They go to the mosque on the pretext of performing the Subuh prayers, but the real intention of the “Gang Subuh” members is to look out for their next prey.

A gang of six from Sungai Petani, comprising four men and two women, aged between 19 and 41, will break into cars and steal valuables from the vehicles while the owners are performing their prayers.

It is believed that the gang would usually strike between 5.30am and 6.30am and would use crushed ceramic from spark plugs, which they spit on and throw at the side windows to create cracks on the glass.

They then smash the glass and loot the valuables from inside the cars.

The members have been active for about nine months but their activities came to an end after police, who set up a task force, detained three of its members, including the mastermind, who is a 33-year-old drug addict.

The man was picked up from a rented house in Jalan Kuala Ketil, Sungai Petani at about 8pm on March 11.

Yan district police chief Deputy Superintendent Muhamad Halim Yatim said yesterday that about half an hour after the three were arrested, police managed to nab the other three members when they came over to the house.

DSP Muhamad Halim said with the arrest of the group members, police managed to solve four cases at mosques in Yan.

DSP Muhamad Halim also said the arrests were made following a police report lodged by a 62-year-old retired teacher, who lost RM3,000 worth of valuables including his wallet on March 11, when his car which was parked at a mosque compound, was broken into.

“The police checked CCTV recordings at the mosque’s premises, which led to the arrest of the suspects,” he said.

He also added that all six tested positive for methamphetamine and five of them have previous criminal and drug-related records.
