        The embattled Christian governor of the Indonesian capital Jakarta is set to lose power after voters opted for his rival in a city election on Wednesday, a result seen as a victory for conservative Islamists and a defeat for pluralism in the world’s largest Muslim nation.


        Early vote counts suggested that the incumbent Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, an ethnic Chinese citizen known as Ahok who is the nation’s highest rising Christian politician in generations, had lost to his Muslim challenger Anies Baswedan after an openly sectarian campaign by Islamist hardliners.

Mr Anies, a former education minister, was on track to win more than 55 per cent of the vote in the run-off vote between the two — a more decisive result than many observers expected. Official final results are not expected for days.

Politicians close to Mr Anies’s campaign have already declared victory for their candidate. “The New Governor of Jakarta, Anies Baswedan. Thank you Jakartans!” tweeted Fadli Zon, a leading conservative politician, as Anies supporters let off fireworks around the city to celebrate the apparent victory of their candidate.

“Of course I’m happy and proud,” said Nayli Suroya, a 23-year-old recent graduate. “First off because he’s Muslim.”

Mr Purnama was a polarising governor, popular among the middle class for his campaigning against corruption, but disliked by many poorer Jakartans for his perceived arrogance and slum-clearance programmes.

“The last thing we need in this city, with this tension going towards the presidential election, is a governor who isn’t capable of controlling himself and his comments,” said Pandji Pragiwaksono, a blogger and comedian who supported Mr Anies.

Still, the biggest divide in the election turned on religion, after hardline Muslim leaders drummed up support for Mr Anies by gathering hundreds of thousands of protesters for anti-Ahok demonstrations in the months before the election.

Mr Anies told the media that he, as a Muslim, would never vote for a Christian leader, based on his interpretations of the Koran. There were even banners decorating mosques around Jakarta declaring that any Muslim who supported the Christian candidate would be denied burial rituals.



        When Mr Purnama rejected such assumptions about the Koran’s stance on politics, he was prosecuted for blasphemy, for which he could face a prison sentence of up to five years if convicted.

“I think nothing drastic will change, with Anies winning, in terms of programmes and policy,” said Tobias Basuki, a researcher at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta. “But the long-term trajectory is that politicians and political parties will know that actually using sectarianism issues and politicising religion so viciously works. That will be a dangerous precedent for other upcoming elections.”

The Jakarta vote has been widely interpreted as a dress rehearsal for the next national election in 2019, when the nation’s conservative and Islamist forces will look to defeat President Joko Widodo, a pluralist and close ally of Mr Purnama.


        Prabowo Subianto, a former general who lost a close presidential election to Mr Joko in 2014, strongly backed Mr Anies against Mr Purnama in this election, and is widely expected to run for president again.

“The result has also shifted the map for the 2019 elections,” Marcus Mietzner, a professor at Australian National University wrote in an emailed comment on the poll. “Whatever the concrete formations are, the 2019 presidential race is certain to be defined by the same pluralist-Islamist faultline that decided the Jakarta election.”
