.. Jakarta Islamist, nemesis of Ahok, snared in web sex scandal

Screen grabs of intimate conversations alleged to have taken place between Rizieq Shihab and a woman named Firza Husein, as well as a purported conversation between the woman and a friend confiding the stresses of having an affair with the notorious Islamist, have gone viral in recent days in Indonesia.

Earlier this week the FPI chairman was charged with insulting state symbols and Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno, over remarks he made in a previous sermon. He faces potentially further charges in coming days as a result of complaints lodged over other allegedly slanderous statements made in recent months. He has denied all accusations.

Yesterday the cleric vehemently denied the latest and most salacious claims, which his lawyers have branded a “systematic attempt” to undermine the Islamic leader following a successful campaign to have Jakarta’s ethnic-Chinese, Christian governor, Basuki Tjahaja “Ahok” Purnama, prosecuted for blasphemy.

“Regarding the slanderous conversation purportedly involving Firza Husein and myself I must say that it is all a lie,” Mr Rizieq said.

“This is not the first time I was slandered like this. I was accused of having six wives, I was accused of sodomy, accused of having an affair with a woman, accused of receiving bribes, accused of occupying government property, accused of insulting Pancasila.

“My response to all this slanders, Let Allah be my sole companion. He is the best of saviours, the best of guardians for mankind.”

Mr Rizieq, who has long called for Indonesia to abandon its secular constitution in favour of an Islamic state, is already facing multiple criminal lawsuits, ranging from insulting the country’s ideology Pancasila, blaspheming Christianity to insulting the country’s Central Bank.

A website, which has now been banned, claimed to have obtained a copy of a WhatsApp conversation between Mr Rizieq and Ms Husein in which he allegedly told the woman to send nude pictures of herself.

A lawyer for Ms Husein said the photos were doctored and the conversation never occurred.

Mr Rizieq’s lawyer, Kapitra Ampera said his client had not used a mobile phone since November.

“Rizieq’s phone has been hacked so he no longer uses one himself. So it is not possible for someone to be chatting with Rizieq. The vulgar and indecent nature of the language used in the conversation does not fit Habib Rizieq’s style and character. It couldn’t have been him,” he said.


Jakarta police spokesman Raden Argo Purwono said police “will examine every aspect of the contents” in the website.

“Spreading and producing pornographic content is a criminal offense. We will prove whether the contents are real or not. We will bring in several experts to testify from linguistic experts, criminal law experts, digital forensics experts and others,” he said.

Mr Rizieq turned the once obscure FPI, known for raiding nightclubs and LGBT discussions, into a political player in the Muslim majority country after he led a series of mass protests demanding Ahok be prosecuted for insulting Islam.

The rallies forced President Joko Widodo to promise an investigation against his key ally.

The latest rally in December drew an estimated half a million people, including Mr Joko himself who joined Mr Rizieq on stage and addressed the crowd, lending legitimacy to the hardline cleric and highlighting his own weakness.

Mr Ampera said since those rallies there had been “attempts to criminalise and destroy” his client’s character.

“These attempts, I believe, are systematic and organised. This is not the doing of a single person. Within the course of just a few months (police) report after report are lodged, cases after cases are trumped up against Rizieq,” he said.

“We will fight back. We are collecting data and facts as many as we can about these criminalisation attempts.”
