Shocking!!! Where Were Teachers When The Three Students Drowned?
May 7, 2017
Bereaved Parents of SMK Putatan Boys Want Justice Carried Out; Teachers and Resort Owners Must Be Held Accountable
By BORNEOTODAY REPORTERS

KOTA KINABALU: The three boys of SMK Putatan who drowned while on a school outing at the Lake Eco Resort in Membakut last week would probably be alive if only the teachers who had accompanied the students were around at the time of the incident.

It was shockingly revealed Sunday that when seven students were made to jump into the lake by a guide from the resort, there were no teachers around at all.

Quzaimi Zakaria, Hafiz Hamizan and Daniel Norman drowned after they were told to jump into a lake in Membakut by the guide who was jungle trekking with them last Saturday.

Hafiz Hamizan Rahman, 16, Danial Norman, 16 and Quzaimi Jakaria, 17, were pulled out from the lake in an unconscious state but were later reported dead by medical personnel, while four others were rescued.

And apart from lame excuses and half-hearted apologies, the bereaved parents are still waiting for answers from teachers and eco-resort operators.

In a statement read by Imam Norisham Purah, 50, the father of Norman, he and the others are not satisfied with the attitude of the school authorities nor the eco resort owners, who have not given a true account of what really happened on that fateful day.

Norisham said from what they were told by another student who was at the scene of the tragedy, seven of their schoolmates were told to jump into the lake, after the guide went in first.

“The boys followed suit but were caught in soft sand and were unable to come out,” said Norisham. “The others tried to help but there were no ropes or lifebuoys to throw a lifeline to the victims.

“Some 15 to 20 minutes later, only then did some of the teachers arrive; they managed to rescue four of the boys, but our three children were gone by then.”

He went on to ask as to why the groups of students were left in the hands of a guide and queried where the teachers were when the ‘jungle trekking’ was taking place.

Jakaria said that based a student who was rescued, the resort worker had allegedly ordered them to enter the pool without the permission of the teachers as the camp did not involve any water-related activity.

“There were no teachers with the first group that went ahead. Why was there no teachers? They relied on the guides only?” he said, adding that his only son based on what other students told them, had shouted for help for nearly ten minutes before he drowned.

Norisham was accompanied by his wife Fatimall Mohd Salleh, 49, Jakaria Osman and his wife Anisha Jaafar, 46, (parents to Qhuzaimi) and Abdul Rahman Ahmad, 55, and Nur Farzyena Fung Abdullah, 46 (parent to Hafiz).

Seated from left: Abdul Rahman Ahmad, Nurfazryena Fung Abdullah, Fatimah Mohd Salleh, Imam Norisham, Jakaria Osman, Anisah Jaafar and relatives and family members who met the media at Putatan on Sunday.

All three parents believe the element of negligence and irresponsibility on the part of both teachers and resort operator was the cause of the tragedy.

They said they waited for explanations or at least an official letter about the incident before they decided to hire a lawyer to pursue the matter, as they wanted answers what really happened.

Following their initial report in Beaufort following the April 28 incident, the parents have followed up with another police report with Penampang police here on May 4 in seeking justice for their children.

He said he hoped both police and Education Minsitry take appropriate action against those who had allegedly acted negligently and irresponsibly.

“Even if there was any water activity allowed, the resort operators should have life jackets, signboards and other safety elements in the place,” he added.

It was earlier reported that deputy Education Minister P Kamalanathan had said that the standard operating procedure (SOP) was not adhered to, and that ‘jungle trekking’ was not included in the programme.

However he said that the ministry was still awaiting a full report from the police as well as the Sabah Education Department before any disciplinary action is taken for those involved in the tragedy.

“I can say if those concerned had adhered strictly to the SOP for such school outings, the tragedy could have been averted,” Kamalanathan was reported as saying.

Beaufort police have classified the case as sudden death (death by misadventure) and are probing at aspects of negligence by any of the parties while Education Ministry were probing if Standard Operating Procedures were followed.

The school leadership camp was approved by the Penampang district education office and did not involve any water activity.

Bakal kecoh ni...

Apa cerita sebenar?[UPDATE]
Ahad, 7 Mei 2017 @ 12:35 PM

Parents seek justice for children who drowned during leadership camp

KOTA KINABALU: Grieving parents of three schoolboys who drowned during a leadership camping trip in south-western Membakut nine days ago, are still waiting for answers from teachers and the eco-resort operators.

"We are still not satisfied. Till today, no one has come forward to explain what really happened to our children, whether from the school authorities or the eco-resort operators over the April 29 incident," the families said in a statement read by Norisham Purah, 50, the father of Norman Danial, 16, during a press conference here on Sunday.

Norman, Qhuzaimi Jakaria, 17, and Hafiz Hamizan Abdul Rahman, 16, drowned while trekking along a stream at the eco-resort during their SMK Putatan school leadership camping trip involving some 119 students and 30 teachers.

Also present at the press conference were Norisham's wife Fatimall Mohd Salleh, 49; Jakaria Osman and his wife Anisha Jaafar, 46, (parents to Qhuzaimi), as well as Abdul Rahman Ahmad, 55, and Nur Farzyena Fung Abdullah, 46 (Hafiz's parents).

They claimed that the children drowned due to the negligence and irresponsibility of both teachers and the resort operators.

The parents said when there was no explanation or an official letter about the incident, they decided to hire a lawyer to pursue the matter.

The parents said they wanted answers on what had really happened during the tragic outing.

Following their initial report in Beaufort, the parents lodged another report with Penampang police here on May 4 in seeking justice for their children.

"No one has come forward to even say sorry to us," said Norisham, whose son Danial is the seventh of eight children.

According to the parents, they believed that based on what other students had told them, none of the accompanying teachers were with their children.

They said the children were left with the resort guide during the trek to the water area.

Jakaria said that based on what a student had said, the resort worker had allegedly ordered them to enter the stream without the permission of the teachers although water activities were not part of the camp course.

"There were no teachers with the first group that went ahead. Why was there no teachers with the students? They relied on the guides only?" he said, adding that his only son had shouted for help for nearly 10 minutes before he drowned.

He said this was based on what other students had told them.

He said he hoped both the police and Education Ministry would take appropriate action against those who allegedly acted negligently and irresponsibly.

"Even if there was any water activity allowed, the resort operators should have life jackets, signboards and other safety elements in the place," he added.

Three teenagers drown during school camping trip

The spot where the tragedy occurred.

KOTA KINABALU: Three teenagers on a school camping trip drowned while trekking at a manmade stream at a resort off Membakut, some 90km from here, on Saturday.

The boys have been identified as Hafiz Hamizan Rahman, Daniel Norman (both 16) and Khuzaimi Zakaran, 17.

It is learnt that the three were part of a larger group comprising teachers and students trekking along the stream.

They had strayed slightly away from the group when they slipped and fell into a deeper part of the water.

It is believed that by the time the others managed to rescue them, it was too late and the boys were already unconscious.

According to Sabah Fire and Rescue Department operations chief Khatizah Rahaban, the boys, all from SMK Putatan, were sent to the district hospital.

"We are trying to ascertain what happened prior to the drowning," she said.

The boys were part of a group of students taking part in a camping trip at the Lake Eco Resort in Membakut.
