Najib to ‘clean up’ at GE14, says The Economist
PETALING JAYA: A global business publication has predicted an easy win for Prime Minister Najib Razak in the next general election (GE14) despite the alleged scandals and other issues surrounding 1MDB.
In a recent article on the arbitration settlement between 1MDB and Abu Dhabi’s International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC), The Economist suggested the latest development in the controversy over the state-owned investment firm would not affect the ruling party’s chances in GE14.
“Many voters in rural seats either do not understand the affair or do not care about it.
“It is rumoured that the prime minister will call a general election later this year, in the hope of benefiting from the opposition’s interminable squabbling.
“As things stand, he will probably clean up,” The Economist said.
On the 1MDB-IPIC settlement itself, the weekly business magazine said while the key players involved would be pleased, the same could not be said of certain segments of the population.
“That 1MDB and IPIC are beginning to bury the hatchet is probably a relief for bigwigs implicated in the affair, even if many humbler Malaysians are wondering how the billion-or-so dollars immediately due to IPIC will be found.
“Although investigations are continuing in America, Switzerland and Singapore, the authorities in Malaysia itself have charged no one in connection with any of 1MDB’s dubious dealings,” The Economist said.
Last week Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua had questioned the identity of the undisclosed buyer said to buy 1MDB assets in order to pay for the latter’s settlement with IPIC.
The DAP national publicity secretary was referring to a Singapore Straits Times report that quoted senior financial executives familiar with the negotiations as saying that 1MDB was expected to raise the bulk of the money by selling “fund units” in Brazen Sky Ltd, a financial unit it owns, to an undisclosed buyer.
On April 24, 1MDB released a statement saying that it had come to a settlement agreement with IPIC over arbitration proceedings which were due to take place at the London Court of International Arbitration.
“As per the settlement, 1MDB will, among others, make certain payments to IPIC and will assume responsibility for all future interest and principal payments for two bonds issued by the 1MDB Group of companies due in 2022,” 1MDB said in a statement.
IPIC, however, made a detailed announcement to the London Stock Exchange, stating that it will receive US$1.205 billion in two equal tranches on July 31 and Dec 31, this year, and that 1MDB and MoF Inc (Ministry of Finance Incorporated) will assume all responsibility of future interest and principal payments of US$3.5 billion worth of bonds, previously guaranteed by IPIC.
The settlement agreement brought an end to a year-long dispute between the two parties.
According to The Economist, past dealings between 1MDB and IPIC are a focus for investigators hunting huge sums that have gone missing from the Malaysian state-owned company since its founding in 2009.
The whole saga started in 2012, when IPIC offered to guarantee loans that 1MDB needed to acquire two power firms.
However, it was only last year that IPIC said it had never received collateral and other monies supposedly due to it under this deal.
As a lawsuit by the United States Department of Justice (DoJ) showed last year, the payments in question had instead been wired to an unrelated shell company registered in the British Virgin Islands, which had adopted a name similar to that of one of IPIC’s subsidiaries.
“Last July, investigators at the DoJ said they thought that this ruse had allowed conspirators to liberate more than US$1.3 billion from 1MDB’s coffers.
“The US alleges that former officials from both IPIC and 1MDB benefited from the swindle,” the magazine said, adding however that the Malaysian opposition claims the sum lost is in fact far greater |
