SIBU: An octogenarian woman lost RM40,000 after being cheated by two female Chinese nationals who offered to cleanse her of bad luck on Wednesday.
The elderly victim told police she bumped into the two women at the Sibu Central Market while buying rations in the morning.
The foreigners allegedly told her that she would encounter misfortune due to her bad luck, and offered to ‘cleanse’ her for a fee of RM40,000.
Convinced, the elderly woman met up with the pair again later the same afternoon and handed them RM40,000 in cash, along with two rings and a necklace.
The two foreigners then placed the items into a plastic bag and returned it to the octogenarian while telling her not to open it.
Upon her return home, however, the victim decided to open the bag and was shocked to see two bottles of mineral water and some biscuits inside instead of her money and valuables.
Sibu deputy police chief Martin Koo confirmed receiving a report of the case, saying police are now investigating the matter.
