*During Mahathir's time, there was little that was subsidized*

During Mahathir's time and contrary to popular belief, there was no subsidies on sugar, and no subsidies on cooking oil, - simply because there was no need for it.

Sugar subsidies only started in 2006 when world sugar prices soared.

Cooking oil subsidies only started in 2007 when world crude palm oiul soared - and that was when the Cooking Oil Stabilization Scheme (COSS) was introduced aka cooking oil subsidy.

Actually, at that time DAP also did not like this COSS scheme:
Petrol was also not subsidized during Mahathir time In fact, it was a TAX on petrol of 58.62sen

During Mahathir's period, the global price of oil was between USD10 (RM25) to USD20 (RM50) per barrel and the dollar was USD1 to RM2.50.

But somehow our price at the petrol pump was RM1.06 per litre for RON92 and RM1.10 for RON97 then.

Compare this to RM2.05 per litre for petrol now where price per barrel is currently about USD50 (RM210).

So, where is Mahathir's "subsidy" for petrol then?

That is why in the official national financial accounts, the total value of subsidies during Mahathir years were so low:

So, what did Mahathir subsidize during his time?

Well, almost nothing - coz there was no need to. He did subsidize cronies with higher IPP rates though. He did this by getting Petronas to subsidize the gas rates to the IPPs so that the overall price to TNB was still affordable.

During his time, China did not start developing and pushed up the price of commodities world-wide.
