Zaid comes up with his proposed cabinet line-up
PETALING JAYA: Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has come up with his own suggested cabinet line-up for Pakatan Harapan, saying that it could soothe differences the coalition might have on the number of seats their parties need to contest. The DAP man said that if the leaders of the coalition reflected and discussed the issues early on, it would show people that they were ready to form a government. “It will also prevent new disputes from erupting amongst all parties, which will only undermine this fragile coalition,” he said in a blog posting on Monday, in which he also thanked PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for pulling himself out for consideration for the Prime Minister’s post. Zaid suggested former premier and current Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad be the prime minister, but said the deputy prime minister’s post should be left vacant.
He said that this should send a strong signal to Anwar, who is in prison, that the job was his, although due process had to be followed first. Anwar was deputy prime minister under Dr Mahathir, but was sacked by the latter. Zaid suggested that Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin be made minister of Oil and Energy, while PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali be made Finance Minister. He also suggested DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang for the job of Education Minister, while the Home Minister’s job should go to a Bersatu member. Zaid also proposed the post of Attorney-General and Minister of Law for R. Sivarasa who is from PKR. He suggested DAP’s Tony Pua as Minister of Trade, while PKR’s Rafizi Ramli be made in charge of large agencies such as Mara, Felcra, Risda, Felda, and Tabung Haji. He added that the job of Minister of Religious Affairs should go to Amanah’s Mujahid Yusof Rawa, the Defence Minister’s job to Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, and the Transport Minister’s job to DAP’s Liew Chin Tong. He also proposed a new coordinating minister for Sabah/Sarawak Affairs, and for the Ministries of Telecommunications, Science and Technology to be merged into one, with PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail taking the helm. The Foreign Minister should be a member from Bersatu, while PKR’s Nurul Izzah Anwar should be made Federal Territories Minister, he added, among others. He also said that other cabinet posts can be filled up later, but these critical ones should be announced now. “The prime minister-designate has to make sure his ministers will do the necessary work properly and honestly, and sack them if they don’t. "He must make sure checks and balances are implemented and institutionalised because in the future, only institutions can save us, not personalities,” he said.
