Teachers ‘not compelled’ to register as voters

PETALING JAYA: There is no directive by the Education Ministry to compel all teachers to register as voters ahead of the upcoming general elections.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan clarified that the ministry was actually actively encouraging teachers to register as voters, as part of being responsible citizens.

“All teachers, and for that matter, civil servants are encouraged to register as voters,” he said in a text message to The Star.

He said as educators, teachers should lead by example to show their students the importance of fulfilling their civic duties.

He added that the ministry had no right to force teachers to register and stressed there was no political motive behind this exercise.

Kamalanathan said the exercise was due to the fact that many Malaysians had yet to register as voters.

On July 31, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak told Parliament that over three million Malaysians who are eligible to vote have not registered yet.

In a written reply, he said that as of March 2017, a total of 3,772,149 people have yet to register.

Kamalanathan was responding to claims that teachers were told to register.

On the claim that the ministry knows the voting constituencies of teachers, Kamalanathan said: “No one has the right to check voters details.”

However, he pointed out, it is possible to deduce that information based on the address stated in the person’s IC.

Ye btul tu... tempat aku dah keluar senarai nama sape yg blm mendaftar. Semua diwajibkan mendaftar... huhuhu

Eleh..kalau dah sekolah kau jd pusat pengundi dan kau dipaksa rela untuk jd petugas undi.. bila masa ko nak ngundi?

Nak2 ic ko masih lg alamat kat kampung. Bila masa yg ssmpat nak balik ngundi?

Xde saper2 boleh tahu kita daftar kectidak kecuali pihak berwajib..
N apa hak bos nk masuk campur..dia boleh je ckp secara general tp klu sampi dpt nama segala..tu dah xbetul..
