Optimist vs realistic.

What do I tell a friend with this issue:

When you have a terminal disease, the doctor said you might have around 2 years to live, which one do you pick?

To be optimist, i.e. you will be cured, you will live longer, you will not be counted in the doctor's statistic.

Or

To be realistic, i.e. the statistic is given after tonnes of researches conducted. Although the medical world is advanced, they still cannot find the absolute cure for the disease. Based on experiences and proof, it is highly likely that the end is near.  

Love being a listener, but I hate it when I don't know how to give proper advice. Wish me luck, peeps
