A US guided-missile destroyer, the USS John S. McCain, has “sustained damaged” after collision with a merchant vessel while on a routine port visit to Singapore, the US Navy has said.
“Initial reports indicate John S. McCain sustained damage to her port side aft,” the US Navy said, noting that the incident happened while “the ship was transiting to a routine port visit in Singapore.”
The US warship reportedly hit AN Alnic MC vessel. A Search-and-rescue mission was under way, the navy added.
Admiral John Michael Richardson, who currently serves as the 31st Chief of Naval Operations, said the Navy’s top priority was “determining the safety of the ship and crew,” promising to share more details of the incident when it becomes available.
Meanwhile, Senator John Sidney McCain III, after whose father and grandfather – both US admirals – the vessel was named, tweeted words of support to America's sailors.
The USS John McCain is an Arleigh-Burke class destroyer attached to the US Navy's 7th Fleet. Its home port is Yokosuka, Japan.
The merchant vessel Alnic is 182 meters (600 feet) long and has a dead weight of 50,760 tons, the Washington Post reported.
Matt Saltus - John McCain was always crashing planes...it's only fitting a ship named after him would do the same

Daniel William Overmier - I'm sorry, but as an ex-coast guardsman I do not understand how this could happen? Who was on watch and who was the OOD? CO and XO should be thrown out of the Navy for this...

Todd Ketchum - Been there when going through the straits of Singapore you will get ships that's will try and ram our ships. Had one come so close to us early morning that you could smell the bacon cooking in the galley. We had people manning hi pressure water hoses around the ship. They will actually try to board them. That was back in 84.

Ernest Shelton - What is going on with the navy? 2nd collision in a couple months before r so! Is there too much focus on social engineering and not enough on readiness? 10 missing, that's horrible! This is more than a little mishap. This is very sad.

Eric Hedrich - After 8 years of Obama, is this what has happened to our military readiness? It was bad enough that the Iranians captured two boatloads of Navy personnel but now we've had four major accidents since then!
