KOTA KINABALU: The youth chief of Sabah’s opposition coalition Gabungan Sabah believes the upcoming election will be a contest between a “Malaya agenda” and a “Borneo agenda”.

Gabungan Sabah’s youth alliance (Gema) chief Jamain Sarudin said it was the wish of right-thinking people to have a one-on-one contest after witnessing failure in the last general election.

“The sentiment is very strong and Gabungan Sabah has to work hard in order to win the hearts of the people,” Jamain said in a statement today.

“The coming general election would see the battle focusing on the Malaya Agenda and the Borneo Agenda.”

Gabungan Sabah’s Papar division had started a walkabout in Kinarut and Papar towns on Saturday and Sunday, part of Gema’s statewide pre-election tour of the state.

Jamain said he was surprised by the warm reception from the people in the constituencies.

“Gema’s explanation on the unity shown by the four component parties under Gabungan Sabah has received a positive response from the people.”

Such walkabouts will make the people see that Gabungan Sabah is capable of forming the next government, he said.

Jamain said Gema’s objective in organising the walkabout was to explain the 15 core struggles of the coalition to the people.

“Among the core struggles are restoring the state’s rights, as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), political autonomy, land reform policy, oil rights, resolving the illegal immigrants or ‘Project IC’ problems, the goods and services tax and the Sabah IC.

“All these are aimed at safeguarding the interests of the people and state,” explained Jamain.

“These issues have been plaguing Sabahans for many years. The Umno/BN government should take the blame for its failure in safeguarding the interests of the state and the people.”

He said the Royal Commission of Inquiry into ‘Projek IC’, for one, had failed to resolve the perennial problem of illegal immigrants in Sabah.

Gabungan Sabah, or United Sabah Alliance, comprises Sabah Progressive Party, Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku, Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah and Parti Perpaduan Rakyat Sabah (PPRS).
