'Student had record of self-harm’
PETALING JAYA: Form Two student M. Vasanthapiriya, who died after a suicide attempt over a phone theft allegation, had slit her wrist two years ago.
According to a counsellor's report, Vasanthapiriya's family was advised to seek medical help for the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Methodist Nibong Tebal student, who died on Feb 1.
The report bore a family member's signature and two teachers as witnesses.
When asked on the matter, Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan said he had been told that the student had slit her wrist in 2016, and the report had been submitted to the police for investigation.
"Yes, in 2016, she cut her wrist," he said, adding the student's family did not proceed with the counsellor's suggestion.
He also confirmed the report had been given to the police.
"On the state education department's report, we are not able to share it because of police investigations," Kamalanathan told theSun at the 40th Southeast Asia Forensics Tournament at the International School of Kuala Lumpur, in Ampang.
"The only mistake the teacher made was sending the student from the school to a friend's house which is not her job," he said, adding that he had not seen the report himself.
When asked if the teachers involved in the case will be moved to another school as they had received threats, Kamalanathan said: "I think we'll have to go through the final police report first because their investigation will encompass a lot as it will go beyond the school.
"Our investigation is on the school, so we are also waiting for the final police report. Based on that, we'll be able to take the next course of action."
It was learnt that the teacher at the centre of the controversy had invited three fellow teachers to help her deal with the missing smartphone.
They had called the deceased into a counselling room for questioning, which allegedly lasted a few hours.
The school's parent-teacher association is helping authorities to find a solution to the situation, which has turned toxic due to the cross-accusations between various parties.
However, Vasanthapiriya's father, R. Muniandy, refuted claims that his daughter had a mental health problem, denying that she had attempted suicide previously.
"My child was a normal kid and as a parent I would have known if she was facing any mental health issues," he said.
On Feb 1, Vasanthapiriya, died after a seven-day coma following an attempt to commit suicide by hanging herself in a room in her house after being accused of stealing a teachers' handphone on Jan 24.

Rakaman CCTV tu mmg ada, dah lama dah, sejak awal cerita lagi, tp cuma nampak budak tu keluar dari bilik guru, blm ada bukti dia yg amik, kalau nampak budak ni yg amik, kes ni dah selesai dah....apa yg TT nak sebenarnya? |

nampak sangat melayu mudah lupa sebab.......... (mungkin sebab kuat mengata kat ig dan fb dan porem)? ne semua memang dah ada dalam artikel asal, termasuk bab mental.. acah2 nak plot twist ke? kecuali yg kerat tangan.. teacher2 dia memang ada bagi subtle hint suh check record budak ne sebab budak ne sesuatuhhhh.. terbukti la budak ne memang sesuatu |

Nk tau kebenaran la. Ke ko yg xphm? Aku tau mmg asal dia ada rekod cctv. Thats how the teacher knew mendiang tu yg ambik phone dia. Tp dlm artikel mula2, cuma ada knyataan dari cikgu/berita tu mcm tu & berita asal tu bgtau nmpk mcm si priya ni dari blakang
Then after netizen dah kutuk2 cikgu tu, on 11th feb baru la ada kenyataan rasmi dari polis yg cctv mmg tunjuk budak tu ambik iphone cikgu tu?? Meaning nmpk secara jelas sheol ambik?? Tu yg i nk tau for sure! |

Kalau betul budak tu curi pun rasanya as family diaorg tetap kena tuntut pembelaan atas tindakan cikgu yg melanggar undang2 kerana dikatakan memukul budak tu dan ditahan dalam kelas sambil diugut. |

bkn nk bekap budak yg meninggal tu. tp tgk dari background dia bkn org yg senang. klu btol dia curi iphone kan blh trace kt mane location ipong tu. aku yg xpkai ipong pn trkial2 nk guna. apatah lg bdk ni. klu dia curi sempat ke dia nk jual ke dia nk sorok jauh2 ke. cikgu msti dah selongkar beg bdk ni. lg 1 klu dia btol2 curi klu dia nk bunuh dri sekalipun msti dia akan bgtau phone tu kt mne. ni mmg smpai mati dia xngaku. hurmm nth laa. hrp ada kebenaran. sian plak kt mendiang. ttp nk slhkan cikgu tu sbb dia tampar n siap pgl laki dia lg. pas tu kurung bdk tu 5jam x bg pegi mane. melampau |

I still 50-50. I pernah bdepan dgn pcuri henpon masa skolah dlu. U will be suprised diaorg ni sggup buat apa je utk buktikan diaorg xberslh. Dlm my case, sggup sumpah depan quran ok. Siap buat solat hajat smua mmg dia xmngaku lgsg. Ujung2 mngaku dia yg curi. Muka inesen hbis. Sb tu klau btol bdk tu curi wpon dah mninggal i lebih berat ke cikgu tu
Btw, klau hp cikgu tu hbis bateri, mmg u xboleh trace kat mana iphone tu. Ada beberapa condition yg buat u xboleh trace iphone
1) hp habis bateri
2) u tak on data internet
3) hp u dlm keadaan flight mode (pencuri boleh buat klau u xbuat pon)

Budak tu takut dgn mak pak dia ke.
Takut nk berdepan dgn makpak dia lalu bunuh diri cepat2 sblum sempat makpak nak tanya.

Curi atau tak curi , I still think she has failed as a teacher.
I'm not condoning theft , but as the better person ( a teacher AND and adult) , she should have put aside her emotion and handled it more professionally. She failed to conduct herself as a teacher because she was guided by her emotions, sadly.
Taulah cikgu keje stress and byk beban ( as of a lot of other professions too), tapi if you don't think you're mentally apt to handle the stress, you should either seek help or take a step out. Not take it out on the children. |
